  • Small-size buildings are not designed by professional structural engineers in Korea. Therefore, their seismic performance can not be exactly estimated because their member sizes and reinforcement may be over- or under-designed. A prescriptive design criteria for the small-size buildings exists, but it also provides over-designed structural members since structural analysis is not incorporated, so it is necessary to revise the prescriptive criteria. The goal of this study was to provide an information for the revision, which is seismic performance and capability of small-size reinforced concrete moment frame buildings. For the study, the state of existing small-size reinforce-concrete buildings such as member size and reinforcement was identified by investigating their structural drawings. Then, over-strength, ductility and response modification factor of the small-size reinforced concrete moment frame buildings were estimated by analytical approach along with seismic performance check. The result showed that they possess moderate over-strength and ductility, and may use slightly increased response modification factor.

  • A new nonlinear model was developed to evaluate the shear resistance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams (SFRCB) using linear genetic programming (LGP). The proposed model relates the shear strength to the geometrical and mechanical properties of SFRCB. The best model was selected after developing and controlling several models with different combinations of the influencing parameters. The models were developed using a comprehensive database containing 213 test results of SFRC beams without stirrups obtained through an extensive literature review. The database includes experimental results for normal and high-strength concrete beams. To verify the applicability of the proposed model, it was employed to estimate the shear strength of a part of test results that were not included in the modeling process. The external validation of the model was further verified using several statistical criteria recommended by researchers. The contributions of the parameters affecting the shear strength were evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. The results indicate that the LGP model gives precise estimates of the shear strength of SFRCB. The prediction performance of the model is significantly better than several solutions found in the literature. The LGP-based design equation is remarkably straightforward and useful for pre-design applications.

  • The anchorage zone of prestressed concrete members is a critical region where a large concentrated force due to prestressing by tendons is introduced. In this study, the ACI, AASHTO LRFD, CEB-FIP design criteria and the nonlinear strut-tie model approach are applied to the ultimate strength analysis of simple anchorage zones of 18 post-tensioned concrete members tested to failure. From the result of ultimate strength analysis, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are compared and discussed.

  • In this paper, an experimental study have been many studies on the joints of steel structure, for it has great influences on the safety of structures. Research on block shear rupture of the joint receiving pure tension have been done in foreign countries, but not in Korea. This study focuses on the propriety of block shear design code, according to limited state design criteria of steel structures recently established in Korea, by an experiment on the joint of angle tension members. The methods of this study were to compare other study results on block shear rupture mode and ultimate capacity, and to evaluate the propriety of the criteria design code. The result is that tension yield shear ruptures and shear yield tension ruptures happened at the joint, and the experimental rupture load was 15% higher than the capacity entered in the criteria design code. We conclude that it is necessary to revaluate the block shear design code presented by many studies on the limited state design criteria of steel structures.

  • Purpose: This study examines the market segmentation and strategy of PT INKA, a rolling stock manufacturer in Indonesia. Research design, data and methodology: The study used the MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making) method specifically the AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). The AHP method was applied to identify the target market. This method or approach considers the market attractiveness and competitive strength criteria with quantified parameters. Results: a) Australia, Kenya, Tanzania, New Zealand, and India emerge as the top five target markets; b) There is justification for rolling stock manufacturers to allocate their resources in winning the market share. Conclusion: The main challenge confronting the rolling stock manufacturer is limited resources to acquire a particular market share despite abundant opportunities in this sector. Despite the mastery of technology and long experience in the industry, selecting a target market with multiple criteria could be difficult for an emerging rolling stock manufacturer in South East Asia.

  • In this study straightforward design procedure for unbond brace hysteretic dampers is developed. The required amount of equivalent damping to satisfy given performance acceptance criteria is obtained conveniently based on the capacity spectrum method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Then the size of the unbend braces is determined from the required equivalent damping. Parametric study is performed for the design variables such as natural period, yield strength, the stiffness after the first yield, yield stress of the unbond brace.

  • The results of optimum design by the deterministic approach adopted in the current design codes depend upon the safety levels of the applied code. But, it is now generally recognized that structural problems are nondeterministic and, consequently, that engineering optimum design must cope with uncertainties. Therefore, it is not an overstatement to affirm that the combination of reliability-based design procedures and optimization techniques is the only means of providing a powerful tool to obtain a practical optimum design solution. In the paper, reliability based optimum design procedure as a rational approach to optimum structural design is presented. The design constraints are formulated based on the ASD, LRFD and reliability theories. The reliability analysis is based on an advanced first-order second moment approach. Uncertainties in the structural strength and loading due to inherent variability as well as modeling and prediction errors are included in failure due to combined bending and shear. For the realistic reliability-based optimization of continuous steel box girder bridges, interactive non-linear limit state model is formulated based on the von Mises's combined stress yield criterion. Comparative results are presented when the ASD criteria are used for the optimum design of a structure under reliability constraints. In addition, this study comparatively shows the results of the optimum design for various criteria of design codes.

  • In modern society, population overcrowding and concentration of facilities are happened because of the concentration on to city. So this phenomenon demands improvement of material's performance, technical development of structure analysis and design and improvement of constructing ability .High strength concrete has some merits. High strengthening makes the cross section reduced, and that cause decrease of structure weight. And using high durable and superplasticizer promote liquidity, thus high quality concrete can be produced. Because of these advantages, this study is for showing validity of using it by compression/tensile strength experiment. As this experiment's result, when concrete become stronger, interface intensity coefficient between cement and aggregate is different and they don't adhere to each other. So there is brittle failure. Fragility factor also steadily increase with strong concrete, it tells high strength concrete has problem. Therefore the sources used in high strength concrete like cement and aggregate must have great quality. So the source's performance must be supervised well because their quality decides performance criteria.

  • Harbor and Fishery Design Criteria defines that ship routing should be designed to ensure safe ship navigation and easy maneuvering. The design of the channel width is one of the critical conditions in routeing of ships. For the criteria of the channel width, qualitative evaluation criteria are used in South Korea, whereas quantitative evaluation criteria are used in other countries. Environmental factors, such as winds, tidal currents, and waves directly or indirectly affect ship resistance when sailing. Depending on their strength the environmental factors may pose a threat to the safe navigation of ships. Thus, vessel traffic control was regulated in South Korea according to the Beaufort scale. In order to design the channel width to reflect the environmental factors closely related to the safe navigation of ships, quantitative evaluation criteria reflected with environmental factors were presented in other countries, however, these external factors were not considered in South Korea. This study analyzed the relationship between the channel width actually used by ships and environmental factors by using the trajectories of ships entering and leaving Mokpo Port. This study also suggested the required channel width according to tidal currents and compared it with the channel width design criteria of other countries.
