Ginseng Growths In Abolished Ginseng Fields and Factors Affecting the Ginseng Growth (폐포지 인삼 생육과 인삼 생육에 미치는 요인)

  • In 61 abolished ginseng fields examined in 1986, the average plant missing was 49.2%, root rusting, 34.4%, and root rot, 3.3%. Plant missing was not different among the ages of ginseng fields; however, rate of root rusting was high in 3- and 4-year-old ginseng fields, and rate of root rot was high in 5- and 6-year-old ginseng fields, suggesting that root rusting and root rot were relatively more important factors related to the abolishment of ginseng filed in younger and older ginseng fields in 1986, respectively. Out of 61 ginseng fields, 18 were infested with more than 509) alternaria blights, and out of 19 fields with root rot, 2 were caused by Sclerotinia sp., 5 by potato rot nematode, and the causal agents were not identified in 12 fields. With increase of the ridge height, root rusting was significantly decreased, and plant missing rate was significantly lower in fields with straw mulching than those without mulching. The physico-chemical characteristics of the fields with more than 50fi root rusting, the contents of $NO_3,\;P_2O_5$ and Ca were higher than those of good fields with less than 40% root rusting and plant missing. The population of Erwinia sp. was significantly corralled with plant missing.

Effects of Planting Date and Mulching Material on Yield of Rehmannia glutinosa LIBOSC HIZ (지황(地黃)의 파종기(播種期) 및 피복재료(被覆材料)가 수양(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This experiment was carried out to clarify the effects of planting date and mulching material on the yield characters and tuber yields of Rehmannia glutionsa LIBOSC HIZ on experimental fields of Chungbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration from 1985 to 1987. Emergence period had no difference among planting dates, but it was late about 10 days in rice straw mulching compared with that of others. Leaf length and width showed no differences among planting dates and mulching materials, and no. of fresh leaves was decreased in the order of April 25, May 10 and April 10 with planting dates. Sugar content of tuber was highest on May 10 planting and in open fields. Tuber yield increased 8% on April 25 planting and it decreased 2% on May 10 planting compared with April 10 planting. The white P. E. mulching and rice straw mulching brought yield increase as 22% and 17%, respectively, compared with that from the open field.

Incidences of Phytophthora Fruit Rot on Fig according to the Cultural Practice and Its Eco-friendly Control (재배양식에 따른 무화과 역병의 발생 및 친환경적 방제)

  • For the eco-friendly control of fruit rot of fig, disease incidences according to the cultural practices at 51 fig orchards in south coast area of Korea were surveyed in 2002, and the effect of soil mulch and potassium phosphonate on fruit rot of fig was evaluated from 2002 to 2004. Diseased fruits of fig orchards of open field, rain shading, and vinyl house were 33.3%, 7.5%, and 0%, respectively. Diseased fruits were rated at 34.6%, 35.7%, and 27% as the tree spacing of $2m{\times}2m,\;2m{\times}3m,\;and\;3m{\times}4m$, respectively. Among the soil mulching materials, barley straw showed disease incidence of 1.8% and 3.5% of diseased fruits compared to 42.1% and 48% of no mulching in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Diseased fruits in dark paper film mulching were recorded at 4.8% and 12% in 2002 and 2003, respectively, which were lower than those in dark polyethylene film mulching at 11.2% and 26.2%. When potassium phosphonate(1,000 ppm) was sprayed 3 times with 10 days intervals from the beginning of disease occurrence, disease incidences were rated at 3.0% and 2.0% in 2003 and 2004, respectively, which were much lower than those of control at 45.9 % and 39.3%.

Effects of Barley Straw Application and Tillage Method on Soil Physical Property and Soybean Yield in Paddy Field (논에서 콩 재배시 보릿짚 시용과 경운방법에 따른 토양 물리성과 수량)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tillage methods such as plowing and rotary tillage (PRT), rotary tillage (RTG), no-tillage after barley straw application (NTB), and barley straw mulching after plowing and rotary tillage (BPR) on the growth and the yield of soybean when cultivated after the cultivation of barley. The methods were compared with the control method in which plowing and rotary tillage after barley straw incineration was applied. Barley straw application resulted in increase in organic matter, total nitrogen, phosphate, and exchangeable cation regardless of tillage methods. Porosity and moisture level in paddy soil was ranked as follows : PRT > RTG > BPR > control > NTB. Decomposition rate of barley straw dramatically increased to 41.7% toward 30 days after soybean sowing, higher in NTB, DRB, and RTG than in BPR. Weed occurrence was decreased 36% in NTB and 40% in BPR. Root activity, nodulation and the dry weight per plant of soybean at flowering stage were highest in NTB and lowest in PRT. Soybean yield in NTB was 3,070 kg/ha increasing 19%, whereas that in PRT was not increased. Therefore in case of a frequent rain during the cultivation of soybean in paddy field PRT could result in excess moisture level in soil, the cultivation without tillage is desirable.

Studies on Soil Conservation Effects of the Straw-mat Mulching (III) -Effects of the Mat Structures and Its Practicality- (볏짚거적덮기공법(工法)의 사방효과(砂防效果)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究)(III) -거적 밀도(密度)의 영향(影響) 및 공법(工法)의 실용성(實用性)-)

  • Eroded sloping faces in hillsides including cut-bank slopes are liable to both surface erosion and land-slides and the key to control of these form of erosion lies with drainages of excessive run-off and dense vegetation establishment including surface mulching on the slopes. Micro-plots having $1.6m^2$ (1 metre in width and 1.6 metres in slope length, and 1:1.2 in gradient) of banking slopes on coarse sand soil are used to establish the order of magnititude of the difference in controlling of soil erosion and water runoff, and in rating of survival, performed on the repetetions of three-experiment plots consisted of such three levels as 90% (Dense), 70% (Moderate), and 50% Sparse of the density of the coarse straw-mat mulchings. The main results obtained may be summarized as follows: 1. The rates of surface runoff are calculated as 13.13% from the dense mulchings, 14.21% from the moderate mulchings, and 15.57% from the sparse mulchings respectively. 2. The total amounts of soil loss are measured as about 1.24 tons/ha. from the dense mulchings, about 1.33 tons/ha. from the moderate mulchings, and about 1.44 tons/ha. from the sparse mulchings respectively. The amounts of soil loss under these treatments are much lower than the standard of erosion in USDA (1939 Bennet). 3. Average numbers of germination by treatment are counted as 80 seedlings at the dense mulchings. 132 at the moderates and 121 at the sparse respectively. Large numbers of seedling are suppressed and died during the growing at the dense mulchings due to mainly mechanical obstruction. 4. Coarse straw-mat having about 70% of coverage density is the most suitable mulches in both soil erosion control and vegetation establishment. 5. The method of coarse straw-mat mulching is the most recommendable measure for establishing the vegetation cover with less soil erosion on the denuded gentle slopes in hillsides at present in Korea.

Effect of Yield and Quality for Cultivation Type and Mulching Materials on Gastrodia elata Blume (재배방식과 피복재료가 천마의 수량과 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was compared to outdoor field (OF) and rain shelter greenhouse (RSG) according to cultivation type of Gastrodia elata Blume. Also, the effects of yield and quality for mulching materials in RSG were compared. The yield of G. elata was investigated good merchantable quality, and the quality was investigated hardness, chromaticity, weight loss and the contents of the major functional components. The cultivation of RSG was increased the yield, hardness, gastrodin, and vanillyl alcohol compared to OF, and the weight loss, chromaticity, and ergothioneine were almost equal. Rice straw treatment showed higher than those of the control and other treatments on the yield and hardness. As a result, the yield and the quality of RSG, which can control the soil moisture, were better than that of OF. And the lower the soil moisture content according to the mulching material, the harder the surface and the higher the hardness.

  • Seeding treatment was used for 2 years at an artificial bare ground for selecting tree species suitable for forest-floor revegetation. 2 ${\times}$2${\times}$2 factorial experiment was used with a randomized complete block design for 19 native tree species and results were summarized as follows; 1. Native species suitable for restoration of bareland under 75% shading in central part of Korea were Styrax japonica, Styrax obassia, Smilax china, Callicarpa japonica, Stephanandra incisa, Viburnum dilatatum for. pilosulm, Magnolia sieboldii, Cornus kousa, Celastrus orbiculata, etc.. Especially, Magnolia sieboldii, Stephanandra incisa and Stryrax obassia were tolerant for forest-floor with hardened woil surface and Callicarpa japonica, Viburnum dilatatum for. pilosulum, Euonymus sieboldianus and Philadelphus schrenkii were suitable for softened soil surface with straw-mat mulching. 2. It is necessary to break seed dormancy to accelerate germination in case of Styrax obassia, Styrax japonica, Viburnum dilatatum for. pilosulum, Smilax china and Stephanandra incisa.

Life History, Ginseng Damage and Chemical Control of the Snail Acusta despecta sieboldiana (명주달팽이의 생활사, 인삼의 피해 및 약제 방제)

  • Life history, ginseng damage, and chemical control of the snail Acusta despecta sieboldiana Pfeiffer were investigated in the field and laboratory conditions from 1987 to 1990. Eggs of the snail were whitish globular and 1.,93${\pm}$ 0.09 mm in diameter which were deposited as egg mass composed of 28.4${\pm}$ 15.4 eggs. Egg period was 11.8${\pm}$ 1.6 days under the laboratory condition. Most eggs were laid during mid July in the field. The snail had a life cycle of a year and hibernated from November to April. Significant ginseng damages by the snail (over 10% to the total number of plants) were observed only in the three to five year old ginseng fields with rice straw mulching. Based on the dates that the first ginseng damages were observed and on the questionary examination, ginseng damages seemed to occur from May to July. Metaldehyde (6%) bait showed reliable control effects on the snail.

Estimation of Seedling Stands and Influence of Water Foxtail in Barley Broadcasted before Rice Harvest (벼 입모중(立毛中) 보리 산파재배시(散播栽培時) 적정 입모수(立毛數) 설정 및 둑새풀 발생의 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to estimate the appropriate seedling stand and to find out the factors of good establishment and the reason of the reduction of yield by water foxtail. The seedling stands was improved by the ice straw mulching and treading by the tracks of combine. The effect of mulching was higher than the treading. The appropriate seedling stands for example yield were estimated about 507 plants per $m^2$ and its yield was 24kg/10a. The higher density of water foxtail, the less the grain yield; 21.8% by 17 to 22 water foxtail stands per $m^2$ and 11.0% by 6 to 11 plants.
