Strain localization is important phenomenon since it governs the total behavior or ultimate loads in various kinds of engineering problems. Establishment of an analysis method for strain localization phenomena is also of great concern for expansion of fracture mechanics of concrete. Inside zone of localization, a decrese in stress is accompanied by an increse in strain; outside the strain decreses. All deformation localization phenomenon cannot be predicted by both the classical stress-strain formulation and the linear elastic fracture mechanics. In this paper, a simple one dimensional model including localized deformation zone is studied under compressive and tensile loading. When the model is loaded. localization is assumed to occur uniformly in a finite region and material outside the localization zone is modelled as elastic unloading occurs. Size effects of effective elastic moduli under compression and tension in localization zone are examined.
Hammer forging was employed for Alloy 718 disk. The change in grain size during hot forging depends very much on dynamic recrystallization. The final grain size depends especially on the critical strain$($\varepsilon$_C)$/TEX> for dynamic recrystallization and Zener-Holloman parameter(Z). In this study, the critical strain$($\varepsilon$_C)$, the strain for 50 pct. recrystallization$($\varepsilon$_{0.5})$ and fraction of dynamic recrystallization(Xdyn) were measured by compression tests. FE simulation was also carried out ot predict the evolution of microstructure. The strain, strain rate and temperature distribution predicted by forging simulation can be effectively used to predict the distribution of grain sizes in the forged workpiece. The present model predictions showed an excellent agreement with the microstructural evolution of hammer-forged Alloy 718 disks.

In the present study, external restraints imposed normal to the plate during the cooling stage were determined to be effective for reduction of the angular distortion of butt-welded or fillet-welded plate. A welding analysis model under external force during the cooling stage was idealized as a prismatic member subjected to pure bending. The external restraint was represented by vertical force on both sides of the work piece and bending stress forms in the transverse direction. The additional bending stress distribution across the plate thickness was reflected in the improved inherent strain model, and a set of inherent strain charts with different levels of bending stress were newly calculated. From an elastic linear FE analysis using the inherent strain values taken from the chart and comparing them with those from a 3D thermal elasto-plastic FE analysis, welding deformation can be calculated.

In order to study the effect of strain states on the formation of shear textures during rolling in fcc metals, the evolution of textures was simulated by the full constrain model using various ideal strain states. Considering rolling as a two-dimensional problem, i.e., $\varepsilon_{22}\;=\;\varepsilon_{12}\;=\;\varepsilon_{23}\;=\;0$, the deviation from the plane-strain state manifest itself as nonzero contribution of $\varepsilon_{13}$. With increasing variations of $\varepsilon_{13}$, shear textures develop. The sign of ell hardly affects the evolution of textures. The texture simulation with various idealized strain states indicates that the ratio $\mid\varepsilon_{13}\mid/\mid\varepsilon_{11}\mid$ in each time interval in a roll gap plays a dominant role in the evolution of textures during rolling.

A micromechanical model is presented for superplasticity in which heterogeneous microstructures are coupled with deformation behavior. The effects of initial distributions of grain size, and their evolutions on the mechanical properties can be predicted by the model. Alternative stress rate models such as Jaumann rate and rotation incremental rate have been employed to analyze uniaxial loading and simple shear problems and the appropriate modeling was studied on the basis of hypoelasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity. The model has been implemented into finite element software so that full process simulation can be carried out. Tests have been conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the microstructural features such as grain size, distributions of grain size, and volume fraction of each phase were examined for the materials that were tested at different strain rates. The experimentally observed stress-strain behavior on a range of initial grain size distributions has been shown to be correctly predicted. In addition, the effect of volume fraction of the phases and concurrent grain growth were analyzed. The dependence of failure strain on strain rate has been explained in terms of the change in mechanism of grain growth that occurs with changing strain rate.
The magnitude of the lateral resistance that resists the lateral movement of the pile is controlled by the amount of the pile movement and the strength and stiffness of soil. In this paper, we proposed an equation which produces the ultimate lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile in sand using the strain wedge model of the soil deformation. The ultimate lateral resistance in strain wedge model is composed of earth pressure of wedge rear, the shear resistance on the side of the wedge, and the frictional resistance between pile and ground. The ultimate lateral resistance determined by the proposed equation was compared with the Ashour, F.D.M., field test in sand. As a result, the error of the proposed equation and Ashour theory, field test, F.D.M were respectively 1.03%, 0.40~3.32%, 6.02%.
PURPOSE. This study was accomplished to assess the biomechanical state of different retaining methods of bar implant-overdenture. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two 3D finite element models were designed. The first model included implant overdenture retained by Hader-clip attachment, while the second model included two extracoronal resilient attachment (ERA) studs added distally to Hader splint bar. A non-linear frictional contact type was assumed between overdentures and mucosa to represent sliding and rotational movements among different attachment components. A 200 N was applied at the molar region unilaterally and perpendicular to the occlusal plane. Additionally, the mandible was restrained at their ramus ends. The maximum equivalent stress and strain (von Mises) were recorded and analyzed at the bone-implant interface level. RESULTS. The values of von Mises stress and strain of the first model at bone-implant interface were higher than their counterparts of the second model. Stress concentration and high value of strain were recognized surrounding implant of the unloaded side in both models. CONCLUSION. There were different patterns of stress-strain distribution at bone-implant interface between the studied attachment designs. Hader bar-clip attachment showed better biomechanical behavior than adding ERA studs distal to hader bar.
A strain-gradient crystal plasticity constitutive model was developed in order to predict the Hall-Petch behavior of a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy. The constitutive model involves statistically stored dislocation and geometrically necessary dislocation densities, which were incorporated into the Bailey-Hirsch type flow stress equation with six strength interaction coefficients. A strain-gradient term (called slip-system lattice incompatibility) developed by Acharya was used to calculate the geometrically necessary dislocation density. The description of Kocks-Argon-Ashby type thermally activated strain rate was also used to represent the shear rate of an individual slip system. The constitutive model was implemented in a user material subroutine for crystal plasticity finite element method simulations. The grain size dependence of the flow stress (viz., the Hall-Petch behavior) was predicted for a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy NIMONIC PE16. Simulation results showed that the present constitutive model fairly reasonably predicts 0.2%-offset yield stresses in a limited range of the grain size.

Strain-softening model is developed to characterize the interface behavior of geomembrane with geotextile and geosynthetic clay liner(GCL). The model proposed in this research is calibrated by using data from direct shear tests conducted on smooth and textured geomembrane. The research is divided into two regions, pre-peak and post-peak, to take into account of strain-softening effect. Although slight difference between measured and back calculated data is observed under high normal stress, good agreements, in general, are found from back calculations. Especially, good consistency is observed in the case of low normal stress. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the proposed model can be a reasonable constitutive law to figure out the behavior of strain-softening between interfaces of geomembrane. In addition, DSC(Disturbed State Concept) model is also presented for further application in geosynthetic interfaces.

In this paper, local ratcheting behavior of 1045 steel plates with circular cutout was investigated. Experimental tests were carried out by a Zwick/Roell HB 100 servo hydraulic machine. In order to measure the local strain at notch root, a data acquisition system with strain gauge was used. Various notch diameters and distances of strain gauges mounted from the notch root were found influential in the magnitude of local ratcheting strain. It was found that the local maximum principal stress plays a crucial role in increasing the local plastic deformation. Numerical simulation was done by ABAQUS software using nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening model. Material parameters of hardening model were attained from several stabilized cycles of flat specimens subjected to symmetric strain cycles. The nonlinear kinematic hardening model along with the Neuber's rule was employed to assess local ratcheting at the notch root of steel plates. The results of the numerical simulations agreed closely with those measured values in this study. Both ratcheting progress and mean stress relaxation occurred simultaneously at the notch root.
