FlaSim: A FTL Emulator using Linux Kernel Modules (FlaSim: 리눅스 커널 모듈을 이용한 FTL 에뮬레이터)

  • Many researchers have studied flash memory in order to replace hard disk storages. Many FTL algorithms have been proposed to overcome physical constraints of flash memory such as erase-before-write, wear leveling, and poor write performance. Therefore, these constraints should be considered for testing FTL algorithms and the performance evaluation of flash memory. As doing the experiments, we suffer from several problems with costs and settings in experimental configuration. When we, for example, replay the traces of Oracle to evaluate the I/O performance with flash memory, it is hard to extract exact traces of I/O operations in Oracle. Since there are only write operations in the log, it is impossible to gather read operations. In MySQL and SQLite, we can gather the read operations by changing I/O functions in the source codes. But it is not easy to search for the exact points about I/O and even if we can find out the points, we might get wrong results depending on how we modify source codes to get I/O traces. The FlaSim proposed in this paper removes the difficulties when we evaluate the performance of FTL algorithms and flash memory. Our Linux drivers emulate the flash memory as a hard disk. And we can easily obtain the usage statistics of flash memory such as the number of write, read, and erase operations. The FlaSim can be gracefully extended to support the additional modules implemented by novel algorithms and ideas. In this paper, we describe the structure of FTL emulator, development tools and operating methods. We expect this emulator to be helpful for many experiments and research with flash memory.

Diversity and Mycotoxin Production of Aspergillus flavus in Stored Peanut (저장 땅콩에서 분리된 Aspergillus flavus의 다양성 및 독소생성능)

  • Peanuts in storage were estimated for mycotoxigenic fungi and mycotoxins. Peanut samples collected from storages in Gochang were mainly contaminated with Fusarium (17.2±28.0%), Penicillium (12.4±28.0%), and Aspergillus (8.0±7.6%). Other genera, including Talaromyces, Rhizopus, Rhizoctonia, Trichocladium, Clonostachys, Mucor, Chaetomium, Trametes, Epicoccum, and Humicola, were also found. Although aflatoxins were not detected in the peanut samples, 29 strains of Aspergillus flavus were identified using molecular marker genes. Among them, 17 selected isolates produced aflatoxins in solid culture media ranging from 0.61-187.82 ㎍/kg. All of them could produce both aflatoxin B1 and B2 and some (n=5) produced additional G1, G2, or both. This study is the first report that A. flavus stains obtained from Korean stored peanut are aflatoxigenic.

The Optimization of Thermal Conditions and Evaluation of Storage for Heated Chunbok-jang (전복장의 열처리 공정의 최적화 및 저장성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to optimize the thermal condition and determine the shelf life of heated Chunbokjang product. The optimum thermal condition of heated Chunbok-jang product was determined by sensory test, and heat penetration curve was obtained by Thermal Microprocessor. Sterilization time was a 21~23 min until $F_0$ value reached 9 min, depending upon the number of abalone. As solid content was reduced and temperature of sterilization was increased, the thermal death time was decreased. The score of sensory test indicated that there was no significant difference in flavor of heated Chunbok-jang product made at different sterilization temperatures (110, 121.1, 125, and $130^{\circ}C$). Heated Chunbok-jang product, however, sterilized at $125^{\circ}C$ showed the highest score in texture and taste values. Salinity and pH were not changed during seven month storages, but texture became firmer, and any microorganism had not been detected from the heated chunbok-jang product during these periods. As a result of storage experiment, the shelf-life of heated Chunbok-jang product was 3-month at room temperature.

Improvement of Temperature Constancy of Direct Refrigerator for Supercooled Storage (직냉식 냉장고의 과냉각 저장을 위한 항온 특성 개선 연구)

  • Commercial direct refrigerators have good energy efficiency, but are difficult to use for supercooled storage due to their large temperature deviation. Placing insulators and conductors inside the refrigerator could reduce these temperature deviations to within 0.3 degrees, allowing for the supercooled storage. The supercooled storage of salted Chinese cabbages during ten weeks was progressed to compare the other low temperature storages. The nucleation temperatures of salted Chinese cabbage were around -2.5℃ and the freezing points were around -0.4℃, so -2℃ was selected for the supercooled storage. The growth rate of lactic acid bacteria and yeast at -2℃ storage was lower than that at 2℃ storage. The reducing sugar was maintained higher due to the growth rate of lactic acid bacteria. The supercooled storage had an effect of delaying the fermentation of the salted Chinese cabbage, which may have the effect of delaying the fermentation of kimchi. This enhancement method of the direct refrigerator was effective for the supercooled storage and would be promising for commercial use.

Application of Artificial Intelligence Technology for Dam-Reservoir Operation in Long-Term Solution to Flood and Drought in Upper Mun River Basin

  • This study aims to establish the multi-reservoir operation system model in the Upper Mun River Basin which includes 5 main dams namely, Mun Bon (MB), Lamchae (LC), Lam Takhong (LTK), Lam Phraphoeng (LPP), and Lower Lam Chiengkrai (LLCK) Dams. The knowledge and AI technology were applied aiming to develop innovative prototype for SMART dam-reservoir operation in future. Two different sorts of reservoir operation system model namely, Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Constraint Programming (CP) as well as the development of rainfall and reservoir inflow prediction models using Machine Learning (ML) technique were made to help specify the right amount of daily reservoir releases for the Royal Irrigation Department (RID). The model could also provide the essential information particularly for the Office of National Water Resource of Thailand (ONWR) to determine the short-term and long-term water resource management plan and strengthen water security against flood and drought in this region. The simulated results of base case scenario for reservoir operation in the Upper Mun from 2008 to 2021 indicated that in the same circumstances, FL and CP models could specify the new release schemes to increase the reservoir water storages at the beginning of dry season of approximately 125.25 and 142.20 MCM per year. This means that supplying the agricultural water to farmers in dry season could be well managed. In other words, water scarcity problem could substantially be moderated at some extent in case of incapability to control the expansion of cultivated area size properly. Moreover, using AI technology to determine the new reservoir release schemes plays important role in reducing the actual volume of water shortfall in the basin although the drought situation at LTK and LLCK Dams were still existed in some periods of time. Meanwhile, considering the predicted inflow and hydrologic factors downstream of 5 main dams by FL model and minimizing the flood volume by CP model could ensure that flood risk was considerably minimized as a result of new release schemes.

Estimation of Carbon Storages and Fluxes by Ecosystem Type in Korea (국내 생태계 유형별 탄소 저장 및 거동 산정 연구 현황 분석)

  • As climate change gets severe, the ecosystem acts as an important carbon sink, therefore efforts are being made to utilize these functions to mitigate climate change. In this study, we inventoried and analyzed the previous studies related to carbon storage and flux by ecosystem type (forest, cropland, wetland, grassland, and settlement) and carbon pool (aboveground and belowground biomass, dead wood, Litter, soil organic carbon, and ecosystem) in Korean ecosystems. We also collected the results of previous studies and calculated the average value of carbon storage and flux for each ecosystem type and carbon pool. As a result, we found that most (66%) of Korea's carbon storage and fluxes studies were conducted in forests. Based on the results of forest studies, we estimated the storage by carbon stock. We found that much carbon is stored in vegetation (aboveground: 4,018.32 gC m-2 and belowground biomass: 4,095.63 gC m-2) and soil (4,159.43 gC m-2). In particular, a large amount of carbon is stored in the forest understory. For other ecosystem types, it was impossible to determine each carbon pool's storage and flux due to data limitations. However, in the case of soil organic carbon storage, the data for forests and grasslands were comparable, showing that both ecosystems store relatively similar amounts of carbon (4,159.43 gC m-2, 4,023.23 gC m-2, respectively). This study confirms the need to study carbon in rather diverse ecosystem types.

Effects of Fertilization and Clone on Aboveground and Soil Carbon Storages in a Willow (Salix spp.) Bioenergy Plantation (버드나무(Salix spp.) 조림지내(造林地內) 시비(施肥)와 클론이 지상부(地上部) 및 토양중(土壤中) 탄소축적(炭素蓄積)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • The influences of fertilizer treatment and clones of five willows and one hybrid poplar on above ground and soil carbon (C) accumulations in a willow bioenergy plantation were studied. The aboveground and soil samples were collected in the winter of 1992 and 1993 from the previously established willow plantation at Tully, New York, U.S.A. in 1987. Half of the plots were fertilized annually with 336kg/ha N, 112kg/ha P, and 224kg/ha K. All trees were harvested annually. The most productive clone, willow clone SV1 with fertilization, accumulated 5.4 and 6.8 t/ha/yr aboveground C contents during the sixth(1992) and seventh(1993) growing seasons, respectively. The average percentage of C in bolewood, bolebark, and branches for the five willow clones and one hybrid poplar clone ranged from 51.1 to 57.5, from 54.0 to 55.4, and from 55.6 to 56.5, respectively, among all treatment combinations. Only tyro of the six clones(SA22 and SA2) responded significantly to the addition of fertilizer by increasing the amount of aboveground C accumulated for the 1992 sampling period(clone-by-fertilizer interaction). No fertilization effect, on aboveground C content, was noted for the 1993 sampling period. No significant fertilization effect on soil C accumulation for all soil sampling depths(0-10, 10-20, and 20-40cm) was found in 1992 and 1993 sampling years. Little clone effect on soil C content was found in 1992 and 1993 sampling years, except at 0-10cm soil depth in 1992. The significant clonal effect on soil C content at 0-10cm soil depth could be because of stone content variation rather than clonal effect. The significant clone-by-fertilizer treatment interaction observed requires that evaluation of response to fertilization by willows be made for each clone individually.

Effect of Organic Acids and Packaging on the Quality of Aster scaber during Storage (천연 유기산처리 및 포장방법에 의한 참취의 저장효과)

  • The research was investigated to determine the effect of organic acids or packaging methods (PA) either alone or in combination on the quality of Aster scaber during storages. The Aster scaber was treated with organic acids and PA, and stored at different temperature $(1\;and\;5^{\circ}C)$. Total plate counts, weight loss, color change, and sensory evaluation were evaluated. Both organic acid treatments, PA, and combined treatment had little effect on the inhibition of total plate counts compared to the control (non-treatment). Organic acid treatments showed less weight reduction compared to the control and nitrogen treated package had the least weight reduction, but the combined treatments showed less weight reduction than organic acid treatments or packaging method alone. Organic acid treatments were little different from the control on color change, but nitrogen packages had the least color change, whereas combined treatments were a little reduced, but little different compared to the control or nitrogen packages. The nitrogen packages showed better effects on the sensory evaluation compared to other treatments and the results of sensory evaluation were consistent with that of weight reduction and color change, but not in total counts. All these results showed better effects in $5^{\circ}C$ rather than $1^{\circ}C$.

An Activation Analysis of Target("used H218O") for 18FDG Synthesis (18FDG 생산용 타겟("사용 후 H218O")의 방사화 분석)

  • Currently, about 35 cyclotrons have been operating in South Korea. Most of them are mainly used for the synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals such as $^{18}FDG$, which is a cancer tracer for nuclear medicine. Highly enriched $H_2{^{18}}O$ containing up to 98% of $^{18}O/O$ isotope ratio is used as the target for $^{18}F$ production. The price of the highly enriched $H_2{^{18}}O$ ranges 60~70 USD/g, and all of them have been imported from foreign country in spite of the very expensive price. The target (enriched $H_2{^{18}}O$) is non-radioactive before the proton beam irradiation. But, the post-irradiation target (used $H_2{^{18}}O$) must be managed following the National Radiation Safety Regulations, because it turns into radioactive by the radioactivation of the impurities within the target. Recently, nevertheless of the fast increasing amount of used $H_2{^{18}}O$ in accordance with the increasing number of nuclear medicine cases, any activation analysis on the used $H_2{^{18}}O$ have been conducted yet in Korea. In this research, activation analysis have been conducted to confirm the specific radioactivity(Bq/g) of each radioisotopes within the used $H_2{^{18}}O$. The analysis have been done on the 3 of 20g samples collected from the used $H_2{^{18}}O$ storages at different cyclotron centers. Based on the results, it was confirmed that the "used $H_2{^{18}}O$" contains gamma emitters such as $^{56}Co$, $^{57}Co$, $^{58}Co$, and $^{54}Mn$ as well as the considerable amount of beta emitter $^3H$. It was also confirmed that the only one sample contained over exemption level of gamma emitters while the specific activity of tritium was lower than the exemption level in all samples. The specific activity of radioisotopes were measured different levels in the samples depending on the elapsed time after irradiation. Further study on the activation of the "used $H_2{^{18}}O$" is definitely necessary, nevertheless the as-is results of this research must be useful in establishing a rational "used $H_2{^{18}}O$" management protocol.

Effect of Addition Duck Skin on Quality Characteristics of Duck Meat Sausages (오리껍질의 첨가가 오리고기 소시지의 품질 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of additions of duck skin as pork fat replacer on the quality characteristics of duck meat sausage during refrigerated storage. The sausage made with only duck meat was severed as the control. Three treatments of sausages were produced with addition levels (T1, 1%; T2, 2% and T3, 3%) of duck skin. Our results showed that the addition of duck skin significantly (p<0.05) decreased the moisture content whereas significantly (p< 0.05) increased the fat content in the sausages. The sausages with duck skin had significantly (p<0.05) higher pH values until 4 weeks of refrigerated storages when compared to the control. CIE $L^*$ value was significantly (p<0.05) higher in T1 and T2 than those of other treatments after 7 days of refrigerated storage. Similarly the sausages with duck skin had significantly (p<0.05) higher CIE $a^*$ values as compared with the control after 4 weeks of refrigerated storage. The sausages with 1% duck skin processed the significantly (p<0.05) highest hardness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness values at all storage days. No differences were found between the control and treatment for color, flavor, taste, texture and overall acceptability. Based on the results obtained in the present study it is suggested that duck skin to levels of 1~2% can be used as fat replacer for manufacture of duck meat sausage with a positive effect on quality and texture characteristics. However, further research in necessary to improve taste and palatability of the products.
