  • Caching mechanisms have been studied extensively to buffer the speed gap of hierarchical storages in the context of cache memory, paging system, and buffer management system. As the wide-area distributed environments such as the WWW extend broadly, caching of remote objects becomes more and more important. In the wide-area distributed environments, the cost and the benefit of caching an object is not uniform due to the location of the object; which should be considered in the cache replacement algorithms. For online operation, the time complexity of the replacement algorithm should not be excessive. To date, most replacement algorithms for the wide-area distributed environments do not meet both the non-uniformity of objects and the time complexity constraint. This paper proposes a replacement algorithm which considers the non-uniformity of objects properly; it also allows for an efficient implementation. Trace-driven simulations show that proposed algorithm outperforms existing replacement algorithms.

  • This paper proposes an efficient caching mechanism appropriate for the integrated RFID middleware which can integrate wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and RFID (radio frequency identification) systems. The operating environment of the integrated RFID middleware is expected to face the situations of a significant amount of data reading from RFID readers, constant stream data input from large numbers of autonomous sensor nodes, and queries from various applications to history data sensed before and stored in distributed storages. Consequently, an efficient middleware layer equipping with caching mechanism is inevitably necessary for low latency of request-response while processing both data stream from sensor networks and history data from distributed database. For this purpose, the proposed caching mechanism includes two optimization methods to reduce the overhead of data processing in RFID middleware based on the classical cache implementation polices. One is data stream cache (DSC) and the other is history data cache (HDC), according to the structure of data request. We conduct a number of simulation experiments under different parameters and the results show that the proposed caching mechanism contributes considerably to fast request-response times.

  • Erasure codes have recently been applied to distributed storage systems due to their high storage efficiency. Regenerating codes are a kind of erasure codes, which are optimal in terms of minimum repair bandwidth. An (n,k,d)-regenerating code consists of n storage nodes where a failed node can be recovered with the help of the exactly d numbers of surviving nodes. However, if node failures occur frequently or network connection is unstable, the number of helper nodes that a failed node can contact may be smaller than d. In such cases, regenerating codes cannot repair the failed nodes efficiently since the node repair process of the codes does not work when the number of helper nodes is less than d. In this paper, we propose an operating method of regenerating codes where a failed node can be repaired from ${\bar{d}}$ helper nodes where $$k{\leq_-}{\bar{d}}{\leq_-}d$$.

  • This study focused on making technique and usage of potteries from Proto-Three Kingdom to Baekje Kingdom in Balanri Site. The potteries were divided into four groups, Jungdo type I, Jungdo type II, Tanalanmun type and the Baekje type on the basis of the shape and physical properties. The Jungdo type potteries were used as kitchen wares, showing mostly yellowish brown color. The Tanalanmun type potteries were used as storages, showing gray green color. Firing temperature of the Jungdo type and the Baekje type potteries were presumed to be fired at 900 to $940^{\circ}C$, whereas the Tanalmun type potteries were fired at around 900 to $1,100^{\circ}C$. This is indicated that the firing condition was adjusted according to the purposes of the potteries. On the one hand, the Balanri potteries were made of paleo-soil which was collected in very near place from the site based on geochemical characteristics of the pottery clays and the soil.

  • A fleet consists of a main vessel, light vessels and carrying vessels for purse seine fishery. Carrying vessels contains fish storages to maintain freshness of catches. Currently most carrying vessels applies the cooling system using plain ice though accompanied various shortcomings. Seawater cooling system directly chilling seawater are now in use on carrying vessels in some developed countries to make up for these shortcomings and maximize advantages. This research deals with necessity of seawater cooling systems and establishes system criteria using Aspentech HYSYS program, prior to an experiment of compact-scale seawater cooling system which now in progress of manufacture. Performance comparison on condensation capacity, mass flow rate of working fluid, compressor power input, pump power input and others of the seawater cooling system applying a flooded evaporator is conducted with respect to the temperature of surface seawater varying according to seasons. The result presents that mass flow rate circulating the system is increased about 16.7% as the temperature of surface seawater increases. At the same condition, condensation capacity and compressor input work also increase about 9.8% and 91.2%, respectively.

  • A primary objective in creating a stratified thermal storage is to maintain the thermodynamic quality of energy, so thermally stratified energy can be extracted at temperatures required for target activities. The separation of the thermal energy in heat stores to layers with different temperatures, i.e., the thermal stratification is a key factor in achieving this objective. This paper introduces different methods that have been proposed to characterize the thermal stratification in heat stores. Specifically, this paper focuses on the methods that can be used to determine the ability of heat stores to promote and maintain stratification during the process of charging, storing and discharging. In addition, based on methods using thermal stratification indices, the degrees of stratification of stored energy in Lyckebo rock cavern in Sweden were compared and the applicability of the methods was investigated.

  • Cool-temperate broad-leaved deciduous forests are one of dominant forest cover types in Asia monsoon climate regions. However, our understanding of how much storages carbon in these ecosystems is limited. We studied carbon storage in three cool-temperate broad-leaved deciduous forests at Jirisan National Park, Korea. The biomass of trees in the three stands on an average was $112tC\;ha^{-1}$ and ranged from 107 to $119tC\;ha^{-1}$. The total amount of soil organic matter at a depth of 30 cm in the three stands on an average was $66tC\;ha^{-1}$. In addition, the total carbon stocks of biomass and soil was approximately $178tC\;ha^{-1}$, ranged from 167 to $184tC\;ha^{-1}$. Above values among three stands did not show the valuable difference at Jirisan National Park. The amounts of carbon storage in three ecosystems at Jirisan National Park, were higher than those of other studies significantly, except Seoraksan National Park.

  • In this paper for simulating spatially and temporally varied moving storm in a watershed a distributed model was developed. The model is conducted by two major flow simulations which overland flow simulation and channel network flow simulation. Two dimensional continuity equation and momentum equation of kinematic approximation are used in the overland flow simulation. On the other hand, in the channel networks simulation two types of governing equations which are one dimensional continuity and momentum equations between two adjacent sections in a channel, and continuity and energy equations at a channel junction are applied. The finite element formulations were used in the overland flow simulation and the implicit finite difference formulations were used in the channel network simulation. The finite element formulations for the overland flow are analyzed by the Gauss elimination method and the finite difference formulations for the channel network flow are analyzed by the double sweep method having advantages of computational speed and reduced computer storages. Several recurrent coefficient equations for channel network simulation are suggested in the paper.

  • We have carried out Pearson-type chi-square tests on the orientation data of joints from different depths in order to estimate the homogeneity of joint orientations obtained from a borehole. The orientation data of joints were collected from two non-foliated massive rocks of granitic gneisses in South Korea since orientations of joints in folded metamorphic rocks, for example, are controlled by foliation and also changes as the orientations of foliation change by folding. Borehole images were used for the analysis of the orientations of individual joints. The orientation data were subdivided into the upper level data and lower level data. The data from these two levels are plotted on the patch net consisting of 21 orientation patches. Then, the two patterns on the patch net were analyzed using a contingency table. From the chi-square test on the data collected from two sites, we found that some data sets show statistically meaningful differences in orientations of joints. Since joints are one of the important parameters in determining the physical properties of rock masses, in situ investigation of joints are desirable in the geotechnical investigation and also in design of subsurface structures (e.g. tunnels and underground storages).

  • A local storage of HTML5 is a Web Storage, which is stored permanently on a local computer in the form of files. The contents of the storage can be easily accessed and modified because it is stored as plaintext. Moreover, because the internet browser classifies the local storages of each domain using file names, the malicious attacker can abuse victim's local storage files by changing file names. In the paper, we propose a scheme to maintain the integrity and the confidentiality of the local storage's source domain and source device. The key idea is that the client encrypts the data stored in the local storage with cipher key, which is managed by the web server. On the step of requesting the cipher key, the web server authenticates whether the client is legal source of local storage or not. Finally, we showed that our method can detect an abnormal access to the local storage through experiments according to the proposed method.
