  • To study the relationship between the levels of chemical pollutants and the number of daily total hospital admissions for respiratory diseases and to find the effect of temperature/relative humidity on the admission number, Wong et al. [17] introduced the varying-coefficient single-index model (VCSIM). As pointed out, it is a popular multivariate nonparametric fitting technique. However, the tests of the model have not been very well developed. In this paper, based on the estimators obtained by the local linear technique, the average method and the one-step back-fitting technique in the VCSIM, the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) tests for varying-coefficient parts on the VCSIM are established. Under the null hypotheses the new proposed GLR tests follow the $\chi^2$-distribution asymptotically with scale constant and degree of freedom independent of the nuisance parameters, known as Wilks phenomenon. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the test procedure empirically. A real example is used to illustrate the performance of the testing approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for facial feature extraction and recognition algorithm using neural networks. First we extract a face part from the background image based on the knowledge that it is located in the center of an input image and that the background is homogeneous. Then using vertical and horizontal projections. We extract features from the separated face image using knowledge base of human faces. In the recognition step we use the back propagation algorithm of the neural networks and in the learning step to reduce the computation time we vary learning and momentum rates. Our technique recognizes 6 women and 14 men correctly.

  • In this paper, the control technique of the stepping motor using back electromotive force(B-EMF) without encoder is investigated. The stepping motor generally uses the rotary encoder to detect the rotor position. Since this method increases the cost and the motor configuration size, the new closed-loop control method applied for the B-EMF was implemented by using current detect circuit, AD-converter, and micro controller unit(MCU). The control loop of stepping motor became very simplified. The current change of stepping motor measured by the amplifier was measured and analyzed, when the missing step is occurred. Based on the data from current feedback, position errors were compensated and confirmed by using AD-converter.

  • This paper presents design and performance validation of a method for motion compensation using fast steering mirror. First of all, the schematics of the Electro Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) and step-stare image gathering system for an aerial reconnaissance are introduced. Because of the steering mirror with low inertia so called Back scan mechanism (BSM), the fast step-stare image gathering technique that is required for taking a high-definition still image will be realized. After then, the BSM hardware includes motors and feedback sensors are introduced. Also, the motion profile for BSM will be designed to compensate roll scan motion of the gimbals. At the end of this paper, designed profile and tracking performance of the EO/IR system with BSM will be validated through experiments.

  • This paper proposes the routing path selection mechanism for source routing-based PtMP (Point-to-Multipoint) call in ATM switching system. Especially, it suggests PtMP routing path selection method that can share the maximum resource prior to the optimal path selection, guarantee the reduction of path calculation time and cycle prevention. The searching for the nearest branch point from destination node to make the maximum share of resource is the purpose of this algorithm. Therefore among neighbor nodes from destination node by back-tracking, this algorithm fixes the node crossing first the node on existing path having the same Call ID as branch node, constructs the optimal PtMP routing path. The optimal node to be selected by back-tracking is selected by the use of Dijkstra algorithm. That is to say, PtMP routing path selection performs the step of cross node selection among neighboring nodes by back-tracking and the step of optimal node selection(optimal path calculation) among neighboring nodes by back-tracking. This technique reduces the process of search of routing information table for path selection and path calculation, also solves the cycle prevention easily during path establishment.

  • Introduction : Polyimides are one of the most important classes of the high performance polymers due to their excellent electrical, thermal, and high-temperature mechanical properties. But their uses are limited because of their poor solubility. Most polyimide derivatives are processed in the form of polyamic acids, which are subsequently converted into the imide structures.Recently, it has been found that the soluble polyimides with large molecular weight sufficient to application. For enhancing processability, the majority of approaches have involved the following factors. As much as, the separation of the imide ring along the back-bone, that is to say, reducing the density of imide ring in the repeat structure. The introduction of bulky substituents along the back-bone, in order to enhance the free volume of main-chain. The incorporation of flexible or thermally stable linkages in the main-chain, reducing the packing force. The disruption of symmetry or recurrence regularity through copolymerization in order to reduce crystallnity. The objectives of this investigation are the synthesis and characterization of soluble polyimides as membrane materials by the single-step polymerization and the preparation of the asymmetric polyimide membrane by using phase inversion technique. In the present study, three series of polyimide derivatives are synthesized; H series is homopolyimides, A series is prepared from single dianhydride and two diamines, B series is yielded from two dianhydrides and a diamine. The dope solution was directly prepared from the PI solution via one step polymerization from monomers.

  • A novel dual-frequency microstrip printed-dipole antenna operating at 5 GHz and 10 GHz is presented. This antenna is designed for wireless and mobile communication. The balance step coplanar strip is used to be a transmission line at the center of dipole with matching impedance at 50 ohm. Using the conductor strip align on the other side of antenna and adjust the width of step coplanar strip line to improved input impedance matching. By modification for matching impedance of dual frequency antenna are not affected to the radiation patterns. The Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) technique is applying to analyze the basic characteristic properties such as $S_{11}$ , input impedance , VSWR and radiation patterns. And these parameters are discussed. The analyze problem space are $51{\times}197{\times}175$ cells and cell dimension are ${\Delta}x=0.3\;mm$ and ${\Delta}y={\Delta}z=0.15\;mm$.

  • This paper aims at collecting the guantitative data of kenematic variables by analysing the gait patterns of the normal adult men and the handicapped. The gait motions were taped with 4 video cameras, the cinematographic analyses were performed by the DLT technique of three dimensional image treatment. The following results were obtained in the analysis of the variables: 1. The ratio of stance time and swing time did not show any significant difference in the groups of the normal men and the handicapped when both foot of the former and the right feet of the latter were compared. The stride peeriod time of these two groups were 1.12 and 1.11 second, respectively. 2. In the handicapped group, the step width was wider, the step length and stride length were shorter, and especially, the step length of the right foot was shorter, 3. The small vertical displacement of left toes of the handicapped group showed that the heal contact and the left midstance are almost simultaneous. 4. The two groups have almost the same horizontal displacement of the center of gravity and the same vertical rate of extension. In view of the velocity of the center of gravity the normal adults showed the constant speed of movement. However, the handicapped adults were reduced from the right midstance to the right toe-off. 5. The handicapped showed prominently low angle on the left toe-off in the ankle joint angle, they also had the tendency to walk in the patterns of extended knee in the knee joint angle. Both the handicapped and the normal had the hyperextension on the toe-off in the hip joint angle. In the back and front angle of body, both showed the slightly back-sided walking positions. 6. Both groups had the abduction of both feet in foot placement angle, but the handicapped did not show serious abduction of left midstance.

  • Advisor: Prof. The quality of apical seal obtained with 3 different gutta-percha obturation techniques was compared in 49 recently extracted single rooted teeth. The root canals were instrumented using step-back technique and obturated with laterally condensed gutta-percha, Continuous Wave gutta-percha, and hybrid technique. Teeth were suspended in black India ink for 7 days, cleared, and then examined under a stereomicroscope at ${\times}10$ magnification. The results were as follows; 1. All experimental groups produced favorable apical seal. 2. The mean leakage was $0.23{\pm}0.25mm$ for group 1, $0.17{\pm}0.21mm$ for group 2, and $0.19{\pm}0.23mm$ for froup 3, but there was no statistical difference amoung them. Within the limits of the results of this experiment, the Continuous Wave gutta-percha obturation technique demonstrated relatively favorable apical sealing effect and shorter obturation time. Thus, it is thought that this obturation technique is a acceptable method for clinical use but further studies on this metter should be conducted.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the centering abilities of four root canal instrument systems and the amounts of dentin removed after root canal shaping using them. The mesial canals of twenty extracted mandibular first molars having $10-20^{\circ}$ curvature were scanned using X-ray micro-computed tomography (XMCT)-scanner before root canals were instrumented. They were divided into four groups (n = 10 per group). In Group 1, root canals were instrumented by the step-back technique with stainless steel K-Flexofile after coronal flaring. The remainders were instrumented by the crown-down technique with Profile (Group 2), ProTaper (Group 3) or K3 system (Group 4). All canals were prepared up to size 25 at the end-point of preparation and scanned again. Scanned images were processed to reconstruct three-dimensional images using three-dimensional image software and the changes of total canal volume were measured. Pre-and post-operative cross-sectional images of 1, 3, 5, and 7 mm from the apical foramen were com pared. For each level, centering ratio were calculated using Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and image software program. ProTaper and K3 systems have a tendency to remove more dentin than the other file systems. In all groups, the lowest value of centering ratio at 3 mm level was observed. And except at 3 mm level, ProTaper system made canals less centered than the other systems (p < 0.05).
