  • Safety is the prime concern for a high-speed railway bridge, especially when it is subjected to a collision. In this paper, an analysis framework for the dynamic responses of train-bridge systems under collision load is established. A multi-body dynamics model is employed to represent the moving vehicle, the modal decomposition method is adopted to describe the bridge structure, and the time history of a collision load is used as the external load on the train-bridge system. A (180+216+180) m continuous steel trussed-arch bridge is considered as an illustrative case study. With the vessel collision acting on the pier, the displacements and accelerations at the pier-top and the mid-span of the bridge are calculated when a CRH2 high-speed train running through the bridge, and the influence of bridge vibration on the running safety indices of the train, including derailment factors, offload factors and lateral wheel/rail forces, are analyzed. The results demonstrate that under the vessel collision load, the dynamic responses of the bridge are greatly enlarged, threatening the running safety of high-speed train on the bridge, which is affected by both the collision intensity and the train speed.

  • The attachment of mobile vehicle is necessary for the automated operation on the inclined or vertical walls of steel structures. Since the vehicle requires attaching devices additionally, its overall efficiency can be reduced by the devices. Therefore, external shapes of mobile vehicles have to be researched to give the effective movement on the vertical face. For the design of mobile vehicle, the guideline has been derived from the modeling of wall-climbing, so that the vehicle should have a specific external shape for vertical movement due to the gravitational force. Hence, some adequate arrangement of attaching device to the mobile vehicle has been presented for the effective movement. In the experiments with four permanent magnetic wheels, a plausible result was achieved as a vertical attaching force of 185.2(N), a friction force of 153.8(N) and a curvature radius of 1.4m. The mobile vehicle should be modified according to the proposed design guideline. and then it could be applied to a specific operation as an appropriate external shape. Also, Further research is recommended on an optimal posture and a moving method in a specific application. as the attaching force ortho vehicle can be affected by its posture.

  • LRT(Light Railway Train), which is a intermediate system of train and bus, is arose for the solution of subway construction cost and the transportation capacity of bus. LRT was introduced in 1980's. About 30 local governments are plan to introduce LRT or constructing LRT, at present. AGT(Automated Guide-way Transit) system, which is a kind of LRT, is operated without driver. Rubber wheeled AGT system can reduce the noise and vibration compare to steel wheeled AGT, so it is estimated as ideal transportation system for urban area. And live loads at bridge are classified as the static load of vehicle and the dynamic wheel contact load which is occurred from the interaction of bridge and vehicle vibration, and the surface roughness. In the case of AGT system, the dynamic increment factor of bridge is greater than the normal train bridge and roadway bridge, because, the weight of AGT vehicle is more light that the train of truck. The exact method for dynamic increment factor is experiment. But this method is needed much money and time, moreover, this method cannot be adopted in design. Therefore, a simulation program for the interaction of AGT bridge, vehicle and surface roughness was developed, in this study. And the program was verified by experiment. As a result, the accuracy of the simulation program can be verified.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a passenger radial tire were studied by the analytical method and the experiments. The purpose of this study is to obtain the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of a 2 ply steel belt radial tire fixed on the wheel in order to give datum of the dynamic design of tire. The governing equations are derived with the energy method. The composite toroidal finite elements with three degrees of freedom at each node are defined by specifying geometry, internal displacement functions, strain displacement and stress displacement relationships. In order to verify the capability of the present analysis, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the passenger radial tire are obtained experimentally by using the multi-channel F.F.T. analyser and compared the numerically obtained values. The results show that the analytically obtained values are in good agreement with the experiment and in addition they are in line with the Pott's experimental results.

  • Rolling-sliding, cyclic contact of wheel and rail progressively alters the microstructure of the contacting steels, eventually leading to micro-scale crack initiation, wear and macro-scale crack growth in the railhead. Relating the microstructural changes to subsequent wear and cracking is being accomplished through modelling at three spatial scales: (i) bulk material (ii) multi-grain and (iii) sub-grain. The models incorporate detailed information from metallurgical examinations of used rails and tested rail material. The initial 2-dimensional models representing the rail material are being further developed into 3-dimensional models. Modelling is taking account of thermal effects, and traffic patterns to which the rails are exposed.

  • The corrosion of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete bridge decks significantly affects the degradation of the capacity. Due to the advantageous characteristics such as high tensile strength and non-corrosive property, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has been gathering much interest from designers and engineers for possible usage as a alternative reinforcement for a steel reinforcing bar. However, its application has not been widespread, because there data for short- and long-term performance data of FRP reinforced concrete members are insufficient. In this paper, seven full-scale decks with dimensions of $4000{\times}3000{\times}240mm$ were prepared and tested to failure in the laboratory. The test parameter was the bottom reinforcement ratio in transverse direction. The decks were subjected to various levels of concentrated cyclic load with a contact area of $577{\times}231mm$ to simulate the vehicle loading of DB-24 truck wheel loads acting on the center span of the deck. It was observed that the glass FRP (GFRP) reinforced deck on a restraint girder is strongly effected to the level of the applied load rather than the bottom reinforcement ratio. The study results showed that the maximum load less than 58% of the maximum static load can be applied to the deck to resist a fatigue load of 2 million cycles. The fatigue life of the GFRP decks from this study showed the lower and higher fatigue performance than that of ordinary steel and CFRP rebar reinforced concrete deck. respectively.

  • Monorail is a type of LRT that a train, made with $2{\sim}4$ cars runs on single track. Monorail can be divided into two types - straddled type, running on track beam and suspended type, running suspended from track beam. After Wuppertal, world's first monorail in German, many monorails are currently operated in Australia, U.S.A, Japan etc. In macountry, it was decided to introduce monorail to 3rd line of Daegue. Daegue's 3rd line is public financial project and supported about 60% of total project cost by central government. The central government announced a standard for rubber-wheel type LRT and steel-wheel type LRT. It becomes a guide to local government willing to introduce this type of LRT. The standard for monorail hasn't announced yet although the necessity of research has grown. Korea Railroad Research Institute which has been asked to research by Ministry of Land Transport and Maritime Affairs has carried out research on standard of monorail considering domestic condition. The on-going research is described in this paper. We wish that it becomes national standard and a good guide for local government.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to validate the design criteria of the concrete modular road system, which is a new semi-bridge-type concept road, through a comparison of numerical analysis results and actual loading test results under static axial loads. METHODS : To design the semi-bridge-type modular road, both the bridge design code and the concrete structural design code were adopted. The standard truck load (KL-510) was applied as the major traffic vehicle for the design loading condition. The dimension of the modular slab was designed in consideration of self-weight, axial load, environmental load, and combined loads, with ultimate limit state coefficients. The ANSYS APDL (2010) program was used for case studies of center and edge loading, and the analysis results were compared with the actual mock-up test results. RESULTS : A full-scale mock-up test was successfully conducted. The maximum longitudinal steel strains were measured as about 35 and 83.5 micro-strain (within elastic range) at center and edge loading locations, respectively, under a 100 kN dual-wheel loading condition by accelerating pavement tester. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of the comparison between the numerical analysis and the full-scale test, the maximum converted stress range at the edge location is 32~51% of the required standard flexural strength under the two times over-weight loading condition. In the case of edge loading, the maximum converted stresses from the Westergaard equation, the ANSYS APDL analysis, and the mock-up test are 1.95, 1.7, and 2.3 times of that of the center loading case, respectively. The primary reason for this difference is related to the assumption of the boundary conditions of the vertical connection between the slab module and the crossbeam module. Even though more research is required to fully define the boundary conditions, the proposed design criteria for the concrete modular road finally seems to be reasonable.
