  • A model has been developed to investigate in-river sediment and phosphorus dynamics. This advective-dispersive model is coupled with hydrodynamics and sediment transport submodels to simulate suspended sediment, total dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus, and particulate phosphorus concentrations under unsteady flow conditions. It emphasizes sediment and phosphorus dynamics in unsteady flow conditions, in which the study differs from many previous solute transport studies, conducted in relatively steady flow conditions. The diffusion wave approaximation was employed for unsteady flow simulations. The first-order adsorption and linear adsorption isotherm model was used on the basis of the three-layered riverbed submodel with riverbed sediment exchange and erosion/deposition processes. Various numerical methods were tested to select a method that had minimal numerical dispersion under unsteady flow conditions. The responses of the model to the change of model parameter values were tested as well.

  • This paper is aimed to investigate behaviour of vortex in 2-D step cavity with high Reynolds numbers$(3.2{\times}10^{3},\;10^{4},\;3{\times}10^{4},\;5{\times}10^{4}\;and\;7{\times}10^{4})$. The SOLA algorithm which is MAC type was adopted to solution method computing the flow field on irregular grid. In case of $Re=7{\times}10^{4}$ flow behavior is steady bu periodic unsteady sinusoidal fluctuation of local velocity and kinetic energy is found for $Re=10^{4}$ Continuous movements of small eddies in the secondary flow regions are discov-ered for $3{\times}10^{4}$ Generation of eddies and their active migrating behavior are detected over $Re=5{\times}10^{4}$ resulting in complete unsteady and non-linear flow characteristics Furthermore a typhoon-like vortex(TLV) appears intermittently and rotates along the separation regions and boundary layers.

  • The subsidence characteristics of artificial reef (AFR) in the unsteady flow such as tidal flow were investigated. The scour and subsidence characteristics were confirmed in the steady flow field. In a main study, the interaction of "Flow - Sediment Movement - Structure Behavior" and scou $r_sidence mechanism were discussed int he unsteady flow field. AFR subsidence characteristics was discussed with Reynolds number(Re*), Shields number(Sn*), dimensionless acceleration of flow (af/g) and dimensionless time (t/T). Most of all, the continuous AFR subsidence from the scour was occurred by periodic behavior of AFR. This behavior is result from the asymmetric ground, and is influenced by maximum velocity, duration time and direction of flow.ow.

  • Temperature distriburion in a hollow chlinder has been analyzed mathematically. Unsteady condition considered assumed a constant heat flux input from the inside. The results are compared with experimental results of surface temperature rise of a gun barrel during continuous firing. Their agreements are acceptable. Effects of various dimensionless parameters on the surface temperature rise are discussed. For small Biot numbers, the external survface temperature approaches more rapidly to the steady temperature. Temperature difference between internal and external surfaces becomes greater for small Biot number. Steady solution assumed that the gas temperature inside the cylinder varies periodically. Relative amplitude and phase angles between the gas temperature and the internal or external surface temperature are obtained. Phase angles become smaller for large radiancy of gas temperature variation, small external Biot number, or large internal biot number. Relative amplitudes become samller as radiancy of gas temperature variation and internal Biot number become smaller. or external Biot number becomes larger. The solution obtained in this paper can be applied to gun barrels, heat pipes used in heat excangers, and reciprocation engines.

  • In this study, we tried to validate FLUENT solver model and domain setting for the problem of convective heat transfer in multiple tube bank under transitional zone. We have paid special attention to verify proper boundary conditions and the grid convergence. Through validation work, it is found that unsteady solution method with two-dimensional simulation domain can produce reasonable accurate results compared with existing experimental data. Simulation results with steady solution generates relatively large error. We found that both steady and unsteady method for three-dimensional domain shows acceptable accuracy. Further parametric study for deriving correlation from transverse and longitudinal pitch is currently underway.

  • An idea to suppress the self-excited combustion oscillation was applied to the flames. The characteristics of unsteady combustion were examined and the unsteady combustion was driven by forced pulsating mixture supply that can modulate its amplitude and frequency. The self-excited combustion oscillation having weaker flow velocity fluctuation intensity than that of the forced pulsating supply can be suppressed by this method. The effects of the forced pulsation amplitude and frequency on controlling self-excited combustion oscillations were also investigated comparing with the steady mixture supply. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillation. Symptoms of self-excited combustion oscillation were also studied in order to predict the onset of combustion oscillation before it proceeded to a catastrophic failure For the purpose, the unique measures to observe the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations based on the careful statistics of fluctuating properties in flames, such as pressure or emission of OH radicals, have been proposed.

  • Natural convection from a slightly inclined circular cylinders immersed in quiescent cold pure water was studied experimentally. The experiment was carried out for circular cylinders with uniform heat flux ranging from $100W/m^{2} to 800 W/m^{2}$ and inclined angle ranging from horizontal $({\phi}=0^{\circ}) to 15^{\circ}$. The flow fields around cylinder were visualized and heat transfer characteristics investigated by measuring the surface temperatures for each case. As the results, it is shown that flow patterns are changed consecutively through the sequence of steady state downflow, unsteady state flow and steady state upflow with increasing heat flux. At the same inclined angle, as heat flux increases, the average Nusselt number decreases and then increases. At the same heat flux, as inclined angle increases, the average Nusselt number decreases.

  • The Pressure-based Unstructured-grid Navier-Stokes Solver PUNS-2/3D for incompressible steady and unsteady viscous flows has been developed. It is based on nonstaggered cell-centered finite volume method. Second-order upwind scheme with least-square reconstruction is used for convective fluxes. The SIMPLE method is implemented to couple the pressure and velocity fields. And the time derivatives in the momentum equations are discretised using a second-order Euler backward-differencing scheme. The discretised linear equations are solved by the preconditioned Biconjugate Gradient Stabilized method(Bi-CGSTAB). The developed solver is applied to validation problems using hybrid meshes.

  • A numerical method in frequency domain for the analysis of the acoustic wave equation governing the sound field generated by a non-cavitating propeller under a steady of unsteady loading condition is developed. Theory shows that only multiples of the blade passage frequency exist and that the wave number consists of the frequency component due to the nonuniformity of the wake and the Doppler effect originated from the rotation of the blades. Correlation with experiments for a two bladed propeller, designed to be load-free at a particular advance speed, indicate that the thickness effect can be significant in steady case, but can be negligible compared to the unsteady loading effect.

  • A numerical parametric study is conducted to simulate shock-induced combustion with a variation in freestream conditions. The analysis is limited to inviscid flow and includes chmical nonequilibrium. A steady combustion front is established if the freestream Mach number is above the Chapman-Jouguet speed of the mixture. On the other, an unsteady reaction fi:ont is established if the freestream Mach number is below or at the Chapman-Jouguet speed of the mixture. The three cases have been simulated for Machs 4.18, 5.11, and 6.46 with a projectile diameter of 15 mm. Machs 4.18 and 5.11 shows an unsteady reaction front, whereas Mach 6.46 represents a steady reaction front. Thus Chapman-Jouguet speed is one of deciding factor for the instabilities to trigger. The instabilities of the chemical front with a variation of projectiles diameters will be investigated.
