Background : To examine the problems involved in writing practice of death certificates, we compared the determination of underlying cause of death for vital statistics using recorded underlying cause of death in issued death statistics. Methods : We collected 688 mortality certificates issue in year of 2,000 from 3 university hospitals. And we also collected vital statistics from ministry of statistics. The causes of death were coded by experienced medical record specialists. And causes of death determined at ministry of statistics for national vital statistics were mapped to causes of death recorded at each death certificates. The rate that underlying causes of death for vital statistics were derived from underlying causes of death recorded at issued death certificates were analysed. Results : 64.5% of underlying cause of death for could be derived from underlying cause of death recorded at issued death certificates, 8.6% derived from intermediate cause of death, and 3.9% derived from direct cause of death. In 23% of cases, underlying cause of death could not be derived using issued death certificates. The rate that underlying cause of death for vital statistics could be derived from underlying cause of death recorded at death certificates was different between 3 university hospitals. And the rate was also different between death certificates and postmortem certificates. We classified the causes of death using 21 major categories. The rate was different between diseases or conditions that caused death too. Conclusion : When we examined the correctness of death certificate writing practice using above methods, correctness of writing could not be told as satisfactory. There was difference in correctness of writing between hospitals, between death certificates and postmortem certificates, and between diseases and conditions that caused death. With this results, we suggested some strategy to improve the correctness of death certificate writing practice.

우리나라에는 전국적으로 70여개 대학에 통계학과가 설치되어 있다. 매년 이들 통계학과에는 40명 내지 80명씩의 학생들이 입학한다. 그러므로 많은 통계학과 출신이 매년 사회에 진출하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 그런데도 통계학으로 사회에 봉사할 수 있는 기회를 제공하거나 통계전문가를 통계적 문제해결을 위하여 채용하겠다는 곳은 별로 없는 것이 사실이다. 이것은 통계학 교수는 있으되 통계학과 출신의 일할 곳이 없다는 것을 나타내고 있는 것이다. 대학원에서 통계학으로 학위를 취득해도 사정은 마찬가지이다. 통계학 교수직을 제외하고는 통계학자나 통계전문가가 일할 자리가 없다는 것이 우리의 실정인 것이다. 그렇다면 과연 통계학과가 사회에서 원하는 존재가치가 있는 학과인가\ulcorner 통계학과는 통계학자에게 교수직과 연구의 장소를 제공하여 주기 위해서만 존재하는 것인가\ulcorner 이것은 통계학과 소속의 교수 누구나가 다같이 숙고하고 논의하여 해결책을 강구해야 할 중대한 문제라고 생각한다. 이 논문은 이러한 문제에 대하여 논의한 것이다.

An objective and one-step detection procedure of multiple outliers is suggested by using the gaps of the order statistics. The detection procedure can be used as a routine outlier detection method of a statistical analysis computer program. The procedure is applied to some examples including the data selected by Kitagawa.

In this paper we introduce some adaptive M-estimators using selector statistics to estimate the center of symmetric and continuous underlying distributions. This selector statistics is based on the idea of Hogg(1983) and Hogg et. al. (1988) who used averages of some order statistics to discriminate underlying distributions. In this paper, we use the functions of sample quantiles as selector statistics and determine the suitable quantile points based on maximizing the distance index to discriminate distributions under consideration. In Monte Carlo study, this robust estimation method works pretty good in wide range of underlying distributions.

Quality in agriculture statistics at the international level is very important to all countries in the world. We investigate international organizations which produce worldwide agricultural statistics. The UN-FAO is one of the most important organization in agricultural statistics fields. We first introduce the Statistics division in FAO and present some considerations like production, reliability, quality of the agriculture data from my own experience as a consultant in FAO and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Korea.

Generalized Pareto distribution play an important role in reliability, extreme value theory, and other branches of applied probability and statistics. This family of distribution includes exponential distribution, Pareto or Lomax distribution. In this paper, we established exact expressions and recurrence relations satised by the quotient moments of generalized order statistics for a generalized Pareto distribution. Further the results for quotient moments of order statistics and records are deduced from the relations obtained and a theorem for characterizing this distribution is presented.
