특별기고: 국내 통계학계에 기여한 김준보 선생의 업적과 시사점 (Special contribution: Dr. Junbo Kim's contributions to the advancement of statistics in Korea and implications)

  • 국내 대학에 '통계학과'가 최초로 개설된 해는 1962년이니 국내 대학에 통계학이 독자적인 학문 영역으로 자리 잡은지 어언 57년이 지났다. 김준보 선생은 국내 대학 최초 통계학과인 고려대 통계학과에 처음으로 부임한 전임 교원으로 이 땅 통계학 여명기에 통계학 교재 저술에 힘썼으며, 또한 1971년 한국통계학회 창설을 주도하고 초대 회장을 맡아 국내에 통계학이 독자적 학문영역으로 자리매김 할 수 있는 초석을 마련하셨다. 본고에서는 두 가지 논의를 중심으로 연구한다. 하나는 한국통계학회 태동과 김준보 선생, 다른 하나는 이 땅 통계학 여명기에 선생이 저술한 통계학 분야 두 권의 책을 개관한다. 『현대통계학 : 통계와 추계의 종합체계』 (Kim, 1954), 『추측통계 : 표본조사와 실험계획법 입문』 (Kim, 1956)이 그것이다.

Comparison of infant mortality and associated factors between Korean and immigrant women in Korea: an 11-year longitudinal study

  • Purpose: This study compared infant mortality and its associated factors between Korean and immigrant women using vital statistics gathered by Statistics Korea. Methods: Birth and death statistics from the period between 2009 and 2019 were extracted from the census of population dynamics data of the Microdata Integrated Service, Korea. Statistical data were derived from a complete survey and infant mortality was analyzed from mortality statistics data. Descriptive statistics were used for comparison. Results: The average infant mortality rate (IMR) of Korean women was 2.7 in Korea, which did not change significantly between 2009 and 2019; however, the IMR of immigrant women increased significantly in 2018 to 4.2 and subsequently decreased to 2.6 in 2019. Moreover, the age of Korean and immigrant women at the time of infant death gradually increased from 31.1 years and 25.9 years in 2009 to 32.8 years and 30.9 years in 2019, respectively. The gestational age was lower for deceased infants born to immigrant women (mean, 31.04 weeks; standard deviation [SD], 6.42; median, 30.00) compared to infants born to Korean women (mean, 31.71 weeks; SD, 6.48; median, 32.00). Immigrant women (91.7%) received slightly fewer antenatal care visits compared to Korean women (93.1%). Conclusion: It is vital to devise a plan to lower the IMR of immigrant women in Korea. Moreover, it is necessary to explore the factors related to infant mortality among immigrant women within the context of Korean societal situation, culture, and home environment.

  • 현대통계학은 많은 분야에서 사용되고 있으나 사용자들이 통계학적 개념을 이해하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다. 한편으로는 초등학생 때부터 줄기잎 그림이나, 비율자료의 원그림 등은 물론이고 평균과 같은 기술통계를 배우고 있다. 초등학교 고학년이나 중학교 저학년 학생들을 위한 직관적인 통계 패키지가 있다면 미래의 통계 사용자들인 이들 학생들이 통계적 개념을 이해하는데 많은 도움이 될 것이라고 생각하여 직관에 기초한 통계 패키지를 개발하였다.

  • 본 연구는 우리나라와 뉴질랜드의 고등학교 통계 교육과정을 비교 분석하여 도출된 결과를 바탕으로 향후 우리나라 통계 교육정책의 개선 방향을 모색함에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 뉴질랜드의 전반적인 통계 교육과정을 분석하였고, 우리나라 고등학교 2015 개정 확률과 통계 교육과정에 상응하는 뉴질랜드 통계 교육과정의 수준 7과 수준 8의 성취목표 및 핵심 아이디어를 중심으로 살펴본 후에 우리나라 확률과 통계 교육과정과 비교 분석하였다. 이러한 비교분석을 통해 향후 우리나라가 지향해야 할 통계 교육과정 및 통계교육에 있어서 세계적인 추세에 부합하는 방향성을 모색하는데 기여하고자 하였다.

  • Nonlinear rank statistics for the simple tree alternatives problem are considered. Pitman efficiencies between several procedures are studied. A new maximin procedure is suggested and shown to have good efficiency properties. Additionally, it is desirable to terminate the experiment early comparing well known rank statistics or multiple comparison test statistics.

  • In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current situation and the inherent problems found in modern statistics education in Korea. We investigate the American probability and statistics curriculum currently used in Wisconsin and discuss the overall state of statistics education in The United States. Through comparison of both the Korean and Wisconsin model, we explore the future direction of statistical education.

  • This study suggests a data base scheme of region statistics whose demand has been rapidly increased as the local self-governing body is introduced in Korea.   • In this paper we study some basic statistics in quantile regression. In particular, we investigate the residual, goodness-of-fit statistic and the effect of one or few observations on estimates of regression coefficients. In addition, we compare the proposed goodness-of-fit statistic with the statistic considered by Koenker and Machado (1999). An illustrative example based on real data sets is given to see the numerical performance of the proposed basic statistics.

  • Validity of the stationary bootstrap of Politis and Romano (1994) is proved for U-statistics under strong mixing. Weak and strong consistencies are established for the stationary bootstrap of U-statistics. The theory is applied to a symmetry test which is a U-statistic regarding a kernel density estimator. The theory enables the bootstrap confidence intervals of the means of the U-statistics. A Monte-Carlo experiment for bootstrap confidence intervals confirms the asymptotic theory.

  • To overcome current hardship during recent years of university reform, statistics departments of Korean universities should form a new shape with efficient strategies: First, they should value interdisciplinary and open education to foster scientific generalists rather than specialists (Bode.Mosteller.Tukey.Winsor, 1949). Second, they should work out on developing curriculum and improving educational quality for non-statistics majors (Ahn.Cho.Huh, 1994). The service market is widely open and its value is certainly worthy. Third, they may change their department name from "statistics", of which the social image is not quite right, to "data science" or "data information". Statistics is a field of learning on data methodology (Friedman, 1997). methodology (Friedman, 1997).
