In the present paper, we offer a new flat shell finite element. It is the result of the combination of a membrane element and a bending element, both based on the strain-based formulation. It is known that $C^{\circ}$ plane membrane elements provide poor deflection and stress for problems where bending is dominant. In addition, they encounter continuity and compliance problems when they connect to C1 class plate elements. The reach of the present work is to surmount these problems when a membrane element is coupled with a thin plate element in order to construct a shell element. The membrane element used is a triangular element with four nodes, three nodes at the vertices of the triangle and the fourth one at its barycenter. Each node has three degrees of freedom, two translations and one rotation around the normal. The coefficients related to the degrees of freedom at the internal node are subsequently removed from the element stiffness matrix by using the static condensation technique. The interpolation functions of strain, displacements and stresses fields are developed from equilibrium conditions. The plate element used for the construction of the present shell element is a triangular four-node thin plate element based on Kirchhoff plate theory, the strain approach, the four fictitious node, the static condensation and the analytic integration. The shell element result of this combination is robust, competitive and efficient.

High-speed electronic digital computers have enabled engineers to employ various numerical discretization techniques for solutions of complex problems. The Finite Element Method is one of the such technique. The Finite Element Method is one of the numerical analysis based on the concepts of fundamental mathematical approximation. Three dimensional plate structures used often in partition of ship, box girder and frame are analyzed by Finite Element Method. In design of structures, the static deflections, stress concentrations and dynamic deflections must be considered. However, these problem belong to geometrically nonlinear mechanical structure analysis. The analysis of each element is independent, but coupling occurs in assembly process of elements. So, to overcome such a difficulty the shell theory which includes transformation matrix and a fictitious rotational stiffness is taken into account. Also, the Mindlin's theory which is considered the effect of shear deformation is used. The Mindlin's theory is based on assumption that the normal to the midsurface before deformation is "not necessarily normal to the midsurface after deformation", and is more powerful than Kirchoff's theory in thick plate analysis. To ensure that a small number of element can represent a relatively complex form of the type which is liable to occur in real, rather than in academic problem, eight-node quadratic isoparametric elements are used. are used.

In this paper a new equivalent static analysis method of dynamic behavior during progressive collapse is presented. The proposed analysis method uses the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the dynamic behavior influence caused by the deletion of elements during progressive collapse analysis. The proposed analysis method improves the efficiency of progressive collapse analysis haying the iterative characteristic because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix is roused in the reanalysis. By comparing the results obtained by this analysis method with those of GSA code analysis and time history analysis, it is shown that the results obtained by this analysis method more closely approach to those of time history analysis than by GSA code analysis.
Nowadays computers can perform symbolic computations in addition to mere number crunching operations for which they were originally designed. Symbolic computation opens up exciting possibilities in Structural Mechanics and engineering. Classical areas have been increasingly neglected due to the advent of computers as well as general purpose finite element software. But now, classical analysis has reemerged as an attractive computer option due to the capabilities of symbolic computation. The repetitive cycles of simultaneous - equation sets required by the finite element technique can be eliminated by solving a single set in symbolic form, thus generating a truly closed-form solution. This consequently saves in data preparation, storage and execution time. The power of Symbolic computation is demonstrated by six examples by applying symbolic computation 1) to solve coupled shear wall 2) to generate beam element matrices 3) to find the natural frequency of a shear frame using transfer matrix method 4) to find the stresses of a plate subjected to in-plane loading using Levy's approach 5) to draw the influence surface for deflection of an isotropic plate simply supported on all sides 6) to get dynamic equilibrium equations from Lagrange equation. This paper also presents yet another computationally efficient and accurate numerical method which is based on the concept of derivative of a function expressed as a weighted linear sum of the function values at all the mesh points. Again this method is applied to solve the problems of 1) coupled shear wall 2) lateral buckling of thin-walled beams due to moment gradient 3) buckling of a column and 4) static and buckling analysis of circular plates of uniform or non-uniform thickness. The numerical results obtained are compared with those available in existing literature in order to verify their accuracy.

Finite element analyses are conducted with stochastic elastic moduli when truss structures are subjected to static loads of a deterministic nature. Stochastic stiffness matrix is derived from stochastic shape functions and numerical analyses are performed within the framework of the Monte Carlo method. Analysis methods are verified for the space truss and applied to cable stayed bridge for determining the cable force.

Flat slab system has been adopted in many buildings constructed recently because of the advantage of reduced floor heights to meet the economical and architectural demands. Structural engineers commonly use the equivalent frame method(EFM) with equivalent beams proposed by Jacob S. Grossman in practical engineering for the analysis of flat slab structures. However, in many cases, when it is difficult to use the EFM, it is necessary to use a refined finite element model for an accurate analysis. But it would take significant amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure were subdivided into a finer mesh. An efficient analytical method is proposed in this study to obtain accurate results in significantly reduced computational time. The proposed method employs super elements developed using the matrix condensation technique and fictitious beams are used in the development of super elements to enforce the compatibility at the interfaces of super elements. The stiffness degradation of flat slab system considered in the EFM was taken into account by reducing the elastic modulus of floor slabs in this study. Static and dynamic analyses of example structures were peformed and the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method were verified by comparing the results with those of the refined finite element model and the EFM.

This paper presents a laboratory validation of a new approach for Finite Element Model Updating(FEMU) on short-span bridges by combining ambient vibration measurements with static load input-deflection output measurements. The conventional FEMU approach based on modal parameters requires the assumption on the system mass matrix for the eigen-value analysis. The proposed approach doesn't require the assumption and even provides a way to update the mass matrix. The proposed approach consists of two steps: 1) updating the stiffness matrix using the static input-deflection output measurements, and 2) updating the mass matrix using a few lower natural frequencies. For a validation of the proposed approach, Young's modulus of the laboratory model was updated by the proposed approach and compared with the value obtained from strain-stress tests in a Universal Testing Machine. Result of the conventional FEMU was also compared with the result of the proposed approach. It was found that proposed approach successfully estimated the Young's modulus and the mass density reasonably while the conventional FEMU showed a large error when used with higher-modes. In addition, the FE modeling error was discussed.
This article presents a numerical tool for dimensioning two-threaded fasteners connecting prismatic parts subjected to fatigue tension loads that are coplanar with the screw axis. A simplified numerical model is developed from unidirectional finite elements, modeling the connected parts and screws with bent elements and the elastic contact layer between the parts with springs. An algorithm updating the contact stiffness matrix, calculating forces and displacements at each node of the structure and thus normal stresses in the screws in both static and fatigue is further developed using C language. An experimental study is also conducted in parallel with the numerical approach to validate the developed model assumptions, the numerical model and the 3D finite element results. Since stiffness values for the compressive zones in the parts are analytically difficult to determine, a statistical software method is used, from which a tuning factor is derived for identifying these stiffness values. The method is also applied to set out the influence of each parameter on the fatigue behaviour of each screw. Finally, the developed model will be used to establish a new, sophisticated, fast and accurate tool for dimensioning bolted mechanical structures.

Axisymmetric and quasi-static finite element analysis of an inflated tire rotating with constant angular velocity and contact to road has been performed. Centrifugal force effect was added to load stiffness matrix and equation of effective material properties were calculated by the Halpin-Tsai formulation. In this report, radial truck/bus tire was analyzed. It was inflated and rotated at speeds up to 140 km/h. Then, contact problem was performed to calculate stress-strain field of tire wiht flat rigid road under the load due to the self-weight of a vehicle. Significant changes of stress-strain field of tire were observed in the finite element analysis. Shear stress, strain and strain energy density were rapidly increased at the dege of #2 belt at freely rotating state. This concentrated stress and strain made belt edge sparation. Under the condition of flat riged road contact, strain energy density of #2 belt, carcass turn-up part were concentrated and bigger values than only freely rotation state. Therefore, dynamic behaivor of tire has to considered as design factors which are affected to belt edge separation and bead breakage.
Recent development in composites containing phase-transforming particles, such as vanadium dioxide or barium titanate, reveals the overall stiffness and viscoelastic damping of the composites may be unbounded (Lakes et al. 2001, Jaglinski et al. 2007). Negative stiffness is induced from phase transformation predicted by the Landau phase transformation theory. Although this unbounded phenomenon is theoretically supported with the composite homogenization theory, detailed stress analyses of the composites are still lacking. In this work, we analyze the stress distribution of the Hashin-Shtrikman (HS) composite and its two-dimensional variant, namely a circular inclusion in a square plate, under the assumption that the Young's modulus of the inclusion is negative. Assumption of negative stiffness is a priori in the present analysis. For stress analysis, a closed form solution for the HS model and finite element solutions for the 2D composite are presented. A static loading condition is adopted to estimate the effective modulus of the composites by the ratio of stress to average strain on the loading edges. It is found that the interfacial stresses between the circular inclusion and matrix increase dramatically when the negative stiffness is so tuned that overall stiffness is unbounded. Furthermore, it is found that stress distributions in the inclusion are not uniform, contrary to Eshelby's theorem, which states, for two-phase, infinite composites, the inclusion's stress distribution is uniform when the shape of the inclusion has higher symmetry than an ellipse. The stability of the composites is discussed from the viewpoint of deterioration of perfect interface conditions due to excessive interfacial stresses.
