A numerical analysis for the gas lubricated flexure-pivot tilting pad journal bearing has been accomplished. The film pressure are obtained by Newton-Raphson method and the dynamic coefficients are evaluated by the pad assembly method. The effects of the pivot position of the pad on the static and dynamic characteristics are presented for three pads journal bearing with LBP. The optimum pivot positions for the static performance is different from that of the dynamic performance.
In the current study, a series of experimental and analytical evaluations were performed to introduce the horizontal pseudo static coefficient (kh) as a function of the wall configuration and the reinforcement type for analyzing reinforced soil walls. For this purpose, eight shaking table tests were performed on reduced-scale models of integrated and two-tiered walls reinforced by metal strip and geogrid to determine the distribution of dynamic lateral pressure in the walls. Then, the physical models were analyzed using Mononobe-Okabe method to estimate the value of kh required to establish the dynamic lateral pressures similar to those observed in shaking table tests. Based on the results, the horizontal pseudo static coefficient and the position of resultant lateral force (R) were introduced as a function of the horizontal peak ground acceleration (HPGA), the wall configuration, the reinforcement type as well as maximum wall displacement.
This paper presents dynamic responses of disk flutter and bump in HDD slider. The slider is modeled for three degree-of-freedom systems, which are capable of lifting, pitching, and rolling motions. In numerical analysis, loads from air pressure, preload and static moments from the slider, and stiffness and damping coefficients of the suspension are considered for investigating the dynamic characteristics analysis. The numerical results are presented as functions of typical parameters such as a disk velocity, stiffness and damping coefficients of the suspension, and skew angle.
PURPOSES : This paper presents a comparison study between dynamic and static analyses of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing, which is a test used for evaluating layered material stiffness. METHODS: In this study, a forward model, based on nonlinear subgrade models, was developed via finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The subgrade material coefficients from granular and fine-grained soils were used to represent strong and weak subgrade stiffnesses, respectively. Furthermore, the nonlinearity in the analysis of multi-load FWD deflection measured from intact PCC slab was investigated using the deflection data obtained in this study. This pavement has a 14-inch-thick PCC slab over fine-grained soil. RESULTS: From case studies related to the nonlinearity of FWD analysis measured from intact PCC slab, a nonlinear subgrade model-based comparison study between the static and dynamic analyses of nondestructive FWD tests was shown to be effectively performed; this was achieved by investigating the primary difference in pavement responses between the static and dynamic analyses as based on the nonlinearity of soil model as well as the multi-load FWD deflection. CONCLUSIONS : In conclusion, a comparison between dynamic and static FEM analyses was conducted, as based on the FEM analysis performed on various pavement structures, in order to investigate the significance of the differences in pavement responses between the static and dynamic analyses.
Dams have a great importance on energy and irrigation. Dams must be evaluated statically and dynamically even after construction. For this purpose, Torul dam built between years 2000 and 2007 Harsit River in Gümüşhane province, Turkey, is selected as an application. The Torul dam has 137 m height and 322 GWh annual energy production capacity. Torul dam is a kind of concrete face rock fill dam (CFRD). In this study, static and pseudo seismic stability of Torul dam was investigated using finite element method. Torul dam model is constituted by numerical stress analysis named Phase2 which is based on finite element method. The dam was examined under 11 different water filling levels. Thirteenth stage of the numerical model is corresponding full reservoir condition which water filled up under crest line. Besides, pseudo static coefficients for dynamic condition applied to the dam in fourteenth stage of the model. Stability assessment of the Torul dam has been discussed according to the displacement throughout the dam body. For static and pseudo seismic cases, the displacements in the dam body have been compared. The total displacements of the dam according to its the empty state increase dramatically at the height of the water level of about 70 m and above. Compared to the pseudo-seismic analysis, the displacement of dam at the full reservoir condition is approximately two times as high as static analysis.
The fracture processes under dynamic loading in tension were simulated using a proposed numerical approach and analyzed to determine dynamic tensile strength. The dynamic tensile strength and the scatter of the strength data decreased with increasing uniformity coefficients. The differences of static and dynamic tensile strength were due to the stress concentrations and redistribution mechanisms in the rock specimen. Although there were different mechanisms for the static and dynamic fracture processes, the static and dynamic tensile strengths were close to the mean microscopic tensile strength at high values of the uniformity coefficient. This paper shows that the rock inhomogeneity has an effect on dynamic tensile strength and is a factor that contributes to the different specimen strengths under dynamic and static loading conditions.

The present manuscript aims to investigate the deviation between the middle surface (MS) and neutral surface (NS) formulations on the static response of bi-directionally functionally graded (BDFG) porous plate. The higher order shear deformation plate theory with a four variable is exploited to define the displacement field of BDFG plate. The displacement field variables based on both NS and on MS are presented in detail. These relations tend to get and derive a new set of boundary conditions (BCs). The porosity distribution is portrayed by cosine function including three different configurations, center, bottom, and top distributions. The elastic foundation including shear and normal stiffnesses by Winkler-Pasternak model is included. The equilibrium equations based on MS and NS are derived by using Hamilton's principles and expressed by variable coefficient partial differential equations. The numerical differential quadrature method (DQM) is adopted to solve the derived partial differential equations with variable coefficient. Rigidities coefficients and stress resultants for both MS and NS formulations are derived. The mathematical formulation is proved with previous published work. Additional numerical and parametric results are developed to present the influences of modified boundary conditions, NS and MS formulations, gradation parameters, elastic foundations coefficients, porosity type and porosity coefficient on the static response of BDFG porous plate. The following model can be used in design and analysis of BDFG structure used in aerospace, vehicle, dental, bio-structure, civil and nuclear structures.
The Iksan Jurassic Granite shows relatively less fractures and homogeneous rock fabrics, and is one of the most popular stone materials for architectures and sculptures. Almost mutually perpendicular rift, grain, and halfway in the Iksan Jurassic Granite are well known to quarrymen based on its splitting directions, and therefore it should exhibit orthorhombic symmetry. Theoretically, there are 9 independent elastic stiffness coefficients $(C_{1111},\;C_{2222},\;C_{3333},\;C_{2323},\;C_{1313},\;C_{1212},\;C_{1122},\;C_{2233},\;and\;C_{1133})$ for orthorhombic anisotropy. In order to characterize the static and dynamic elastic properties of the Iksan Jurassic Granite, triaxial strains under uniaxial compressive stresses and ultrasonic velocities of elastic waves in three different polarizations are measured. Both experiments are carried out with six directional core samples from massive rock body. Using the results of experiments and the densities measured independently, the static and dynamic elastic coefficients are computed by simple mathematical manipulation derived from the governing equations for general anisotropic media. The static elastic coefficients increase ar uniaxial compressive stress rises. Among those, the static elastic coefficients at uniaxial compressive stress of a 24.5 MPa appear to be similar to the dynamic elastic coefficients under ambient condition. Although some deviations are observed, the preferred orientations of microcracks appear to be parallel or subparallel to the rift, the grain, and the hardway from microscopic observation of thin sections. This indicates that the preferred orientations of microcracks cause the elastic anisotropy of the Iksan Jurassic Granite. The results are to be applied to the effective use of the Iksan Jurassic Granite as stone materials, and can be used for the non-destructive safety test.

This paper presents an optimal design method for structure-borne durability of a vehicle body structure. Structure-borne durability design requires a new design that can increase fatigue lives of critical areas in a structure and must prohibit transition phenomenon of critical areas that results from modification of the structure at the same time. Therefore, the optimization problem fur structure-borne durability design are consists of an objective function and design constraints of 2 types; type 1-constraint that increases fatigue lives of the critical areas to the required design limits and type 2-constraint that prohibits transition phenomenon of critical areas. The durability design problem is generally dynamic because a designer must consider the dynamic behavior such as fatigue analyses according to the structure modification during the optimal design process. This design scheme, however, requires such high computational cost that the design method cannot be applicable. For the purpose of efficiency of the durability design, we presents a method which carry out the equivalent static design problem instead of the dynamic one. In the proposed method, dynamic design constraints for fatigue life, are replaced to the equivalent static design constraints for stress/strain coefficients. The equivalent static design constraints are computed from static or eigen-value analyses. We carry out an optimal design for structure-borne durability of the newly developed bus and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by examination of the result.
This paper deals with flexural vibration techniques as a means of predicting bending strength properties for quarter-sawn and flat-sawn planes of red pine containing knots. Dynamic modulus of elasticity $(MOE_d)$ was calculated from resonance frequency obtained from the flexural vibration induced by a magnetic driver in quarter-sawn and flat-sawn planes of red pine containing knots. The dynamic MOE were well correlated to bending strength properties. Their correlation coefficients ranged from 0.866 to 0.800 for the regression between dynamic MOE and static bending MOE or MOR. The difference of the values between quarter-sawn and flat-sawn was very small. These values were higher than correlation between percentage of total knot diameter to total width of red pine specimen $(K_T(%))$ as well as $K_O(%)$ base upon ASTM D 3737 and static bending strength properties (correlation coefficient r = 0.448~0.704), and were similar to those between static bending MOE and bending MOR (r = 0.850). These results indicate that dynamic MOE obtained from resonance frequency induced by flexural vibration of magnetic driver is able to effectively use for predicting of static bending strength of red pine containing knots as well as static MOE.
