  • The propagating crack problems under dynamic plane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems in orthortropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components around the crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress components of dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement components of dynamic displacement field in the crack tip of orthotropic material under the dynamic load and the steady state in crack propagation were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress component and dynamic displacement components derived in this study are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determinded by using the concept of crack closure closure energy with the dynamic stresses and represented according to physical properties of the orthotrophic material and crack speeds. The faster the crack velocity, the greater the stress value of stress components in crack tip. The stress value of the stress component of crack tip is greater when fiber direction coincides with the crack propagation than when fider direction is normal to the crack propagation.

  • Exodermic deck systems are new composite steel grid deck systems which have been used in various projects during the past decade. One of the eminent features of this system is considerable reduction in the structure weight compared to the ordinary reinforced concrete decks and also reduction in construction time by using precast Exodermic decks. In this study, dynamic properties of the Exodermic deck bridges with alternative perfobond shear connectors are investigated experimentally. In order to evaluate the dynamic properties of the decks, peak picking and Nyquist circle fit methods are employed. Frequencies obtained experimentally are in good agreement with the results of the finite-element solution, and the experimental results show that the first mode is the most effective mode among the obtained modes. The first four modes are the rigid translational motion modes, and the next two modes seem to be rigid rotational motion modes around a horizontal axis. From the 7th mode onwards, modes are flexible. The range of damping ratios is about 0.5%. Furthermore, the static behavior of the Exodermic decks under a static load applied at the center of the decks was investigated. Failure of the decks under positive bending was punching-shear. The bending strength of the decks under negative bending was about 50 percent of their strength under positive bending. In addition, the weight of an Exodermic deck is about 40% of that of an equivalent reinforced concrete slab.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of heat treatment the on mechanical properties of two species of wood under different heating conditions including at $180^{\circ}C$ for 12 h and 24 h, and at $210^{\circ}C$ for 3 h and 6 h. Two species of wood, Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi, were exposed to different heat treatments to assess the effects on the volume change, bending properties in static and dynamic mode and compressive strength. The results showed heat treatment caused significant changes in mechanical properties such as the static and dynamic moduli of elasticity ($MOE_d$ and $MOE_s$), and the modulus of rupture (MOR). The volume of the wood after heat treatment decreased as the heating temperature and time were increased. The bending strength performance of the wood after heat treatment decreased as the heating temperature and time were increased. The effect of heat treatment at a high temperature on the bending MOR was greater in both species than that for a long time. However, the compressive strengths of all the heat-treated samples were higher than the control sample. Furthermore, highly significant correlations between $MOE_d$ and MOR, and $MOE_s$ and MOR were found for all heating conditions.

  • The most important factor for the penetration performance of shaped charge is the liner design. By designing the liner to have properties of both high jet tip velocity and long jet break-up time, the better penetration performance could be acquired. Usually it is very difficult to satisfy above two conditions simultaneously. In this study, the liner with the shape of ogive was developed to have relatively larger jet mass compared to the conventional trumpet liner. The designed shaped charge showed jet properties with high jet tip velocity and long jet break-up time by using ogive liner and wave shaper. A commercially available hydro-dynamic code AUTODYN-2D was used for numerical analysis of jet formation. The flash X-ray test and the static penetration test were conducted to verify the results of numerical analysis.

  • Natural fiber/natural rubber composites were fabricated by uniformly compounding natural rubber and cellulose- based natural fiber kenaf and then by compression molding. The effect of kenaf fiber content on their vulcanization behavior, hardness, tensile properties, tear strength and static and dynamic properties was investigated. The contents of kenaf fiber in the composites were 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr, compared to natural rubber and additives. The result indicated that various properties of natural rubber depended on the kenaf fiber content. With increasing kenaf fiber content, the torque for vulcanization of natural rubber was increased whereas the vulcanization time was reduced as well. The hardness, tensile modulus and tear strength of kenaf/natural rubber composites were gradually decreased with the fiber content whereas the tensile strength and elongation at break were decreased. Also, with increasing the kenaf fiber content the dynamic property of natural rubber was changed more greatly than the static property. The loss factor, which is closely related with the damping or absorption of the energy given to natural rubber, was proportionally increased with the fiber content.

  • Impact-echo test is a non-destructive testing method to determine dynamic properties of a material. This presentation introduces the experimental set-up and procedure of the test for rock specimens. In addition, the test results of domestic rocks collected in 5 different areas, a cement mortar and aluminium alloy are presented. The test results include resonance frequencies of P- and S-wave as well as damping ratios of the described 7 different materials. The differences between dynamic and static values of elastic moduli are about 10%, while the dynamic Poisson's ratios are greater than the static Poisson's ratios by at least 0.07. The damping ratio is dependent on the joint density and degree of weathering of a rock specimen.

  • Pyroelectric properties, figure of merits, and the other properties of the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 system, as expected to have excellent pyroelectric properties in the operating temperature range of pyroelectric type infrared sensor, were investigated. In the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 system, suppression of the pyrochlore phase depended on sintering condition, as like sintering temperature, holding time, sintering atmosphere. The specimen, sintered by the same composition atmosphere powder at 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5h, possessed the best physical property. It was found that the piezoelectric parameters were mainly depended on the amount of spontaneous polarization and then the 0.2PZN-0.8PFN showed the best pyro- and piezoelectric properties. In terms of the experimental method, two pyroelectric-testing methods, i.e. static and dynamic methods, had a same tendency. Also the result of pyroelectric testing by the static method indicated that the diffuse phase transitiion resulted in the temperature difference of phase transition between dielectric constant and pyroelectric coefficient.

  • The cycling impact test of red sandstone soil under different axial pressure and different impact loads are conducted to reveal the mechanical properties and energy consumption mechanism of red sandstone soil with static-dynamic coupling loading. The results show that: Under the action of different axial pressure and different impact loads, the peak stress of the specimen increases, and then tends to be stable with the times of impact. With the increase of impact times, the specific energy absorption value of the red sandstone soil specimen is increased first and then gentle development trend. When the impact loads are certain, the larger the axial pressure is, the smaller the peak value of energy absorption, which indicates that the energy utilization rate is not high under the condition of large axial pressure. Through the analysis of energy utilization, it is found that the smaller the impact load, the higher the energy utilization rate. The greater the axial pressure, the lower the energy utilization rate. when the axial pressure is large, the impact loads corresponding to the maximum values of reflectivity, transmissivity and absorptivity are the same. The relationship between reflectivity and transmissivity is negatively correlated.

  • The combination of replaceable and repairable properties in structures has introduced new approach called "Low Damage Design Structures". These structural systems are designed in such a way that through self-centering, primary members and specific connections neither suffer damage nor experience permanent deformations after being exposed to severe earthquakes. The purpose of this study is the seismic assessment of steel moment resisting frames with the aid of rigid rocking cores. To this end, three steel moment resisting frames of 4-, 8-, and 12-story buildings with and without rocking cores were developed. The nonlinear static analysis and incremental dynamic analysis were performed by considering the effects of the vertical and horizontal components of 16 strong ground motions, including far-fault and near-fault arrays. The results reveal that rocking systems benefit from better seismic performance and energy dissipation compared to moment resisting frames and thus structures experience a lower level of damage under higher intensity measures. The analyses show that the interstory drift in structures equipped with stiff rocking cores is more uniform in static and dynamic analyses. A uniform interstory drift distribution leads to a uniform distribution of the bending moment and a reduction in the structure's total weight and future maintenance costs.
