Study on the Difference of the Maneuvering Characteristics of a VLCC in Standstill from those of her in Running

  • The objective of this paper is to make clear the difference of maneuvering characteristics of a VLCC in standstill from those of her in running. The authors made mathematic models to calculate maneuvering motions of a VLCC in standstill using various ahead engine with full rudder angle and calculated their motions in each case and compared the calculated values with those of the same vessel running in sea trial tests. The difference of motions between them is great. For example, a VLCC in standstill can achieve a great alteration of heading over 90 degrees within the distance of 0.2L advance while she advances 3.0L for 90 degrees turning in full running sea trial turning test. Therefore whenever a VLCC in standstill meets a vessel approaching in collision course situation in near distance, it is better and recommendable that she should use her ahead engine with full rudder to avoid collision. So "maneuvering trial tests in standstill conditions" should be added to the content of sea trial tests when a newly built VLCC commence to take sea trials, that has not been included until now.

  • Multiple prior studies stress that continued Kaizen activity is conducive to building and maintaining competitive advantages of manufacturing companies. Meanwhile, it remains unclear as to what kind of management factors may exert impact on sustainment of Kaizen activity. This paper discusses a study conducted on the cases of two manufacturing lines, where such activity has been continued for more than ten years. At first, it was discovered that study period was divided into different periods. It was also found out that 'standstill conditions' which prevent smooth progress of activity exist in many periods, and that such conditions are hard to avoid. The study went on to categorize progress of activity in each period into different patterns, including at which points standstill conditions occurred, thereby, circumstances of standstill conditions were made clear. This paper verified a detailed process of Kaizen activity development in each period and the relationship between that detailed process and points of occurrence of standstill conditions. Thought was also given to factors and actions for smooth development, and effects brought about by overcoming such challenges. Lastly, consideration was given to the future perspectives of the study for elucidating how better Kaizen activity may be managed for continuation.

  • An 1 year old intact male mixed dog (weighing 20 kg) was presented with primary complaints of abdominal distension and severe exercise intolerance. Electrocardiogram found profound bradycardia (46-79 beats/min) with atrial standstill. Laboratory studies found no particular abnormalities. Serum cortisol and T4 concentration were within normal range. Diagnostic imaging studies revealed generalized cardiomegaly, ascites, dilation in all cardiac chambers, absence of atrial contraction, absence of transmitral A-peak, mitral and tricuspid valve insufficiency and normal left ventricular systolic dimension. Based on diagnostic findings, the case was diagnosed as idiopathic atrial standstill. The dog was treated with conventional therapy for heart failure.

  • A magnetic flux saturation model of Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) and a parameter estimation method are proposed at standstill. The proposed magnetic flux model includes the nonlinear relationship between the current and the magnetic flux for self-saturation and cross-saturation. Voltage is injected at standstill to estimate the magnetic flux saturation model. Voltages are injected into the d-axis and q-axis to obtain data on self-saturation. Subsequently, voltages are simultaneously injected into the d-q axis to obtain data on cross-saturation. On the basis of the measured current and the calculated magnetic flux, the parameters of the proposed model are estimated using the least square method (LSM). Simulation and experiment were performed on a 1.5-kW SynRM to verify the proposed method. The proposed model can be used to create a high-efficiency operation table, a sensorless algorithm, and a current controller to improve the control performance of a motor.

  • As the major sources of interior noise of train at running condition are the wheel/rail contact noise, the traction motor's noise and the driving gear's noise and these noise sources are transmitted through the car body, the noises of HVAC and air duct can be ignored. But the interior noise of train at standstill condition is decided by HVAC's noise and noise from the diffuser through the air duct. the interior noise prediction of train at standstill condition should be performed considering the shape of air duct, the air velocity and noise reduction property inside the air duct. But it is hard to estimate the interior noise level by the numerical method. Therefore train maker predict the interior noise level using The commercial noise prediction program. This paper introduce the noise prediction method of the train at standstill condition using the commercial program appling the ray tracing method and statistical energy analysis.

  • From standstill to medium speed which enough to sensing back EMF, it is not easy to drive without additional equipments due to directly proportional to flux. Conventional method to drive is 'align and go' method, so called v/f control that is increased voltage duty in proportion to the increase of frequency. Because it isn't consider load of motor and doesn't know rotor position exactly, current is supplied too much current or not enough to rotate motor. This paper is proposed starting method without any poison sensor and can drive a BLDC motor from standstill to the medium speed smoothly without any rattling and time delay compared with the conventional starting algorithm. To verify algorithm of this paper, experimental results are presented.

  • Machine parameters need to measure in advance for vector control and theoretical analysis. Therefore, we present the machine parameter measurement scheme, considering stator iron loss, by the single-phase test at standstill condition. Using this method, the d-q axis inductances and the equivalent iron loss resistance in the voltage equation considering stator iron loss are easily measured. This method is simple and does not need to use complex theory and expensive equipment.

  • In this paper, an estimation technique of initial rotor position at standstill in Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) is proposed. In case search coils are used as a position sensor, it has many advantages like low cost, decrease in the volume, high robust characteristics and wide applications. However, the initial rotor position detection is very difficult because the search coil's EMF is not exist at a standstill. In this paper, a near estimation method of initial rotor position is suggested using squared Euclidean distance. The simulation and experiment for the proposed method are achieved. The validity of the proposed method is verified by experimental results.

  • In this paper, detection of rotor position at standstill of toroidal switched reluctance motor(TSRM) with built-in search coils using neural network is proposed. When search coils are used as a position sensor, it has many advantages like low cost, decrease in the volume, high robust characteristics and wide applications. However, the initial rotor position detection is very difficult because the search coil's EMF doesn't exist at standstill. In this paper, detection of initial rotor position of TSRM with built-in search coils using neural network is suggested. The experiment for the proposed method are presented. As a result of that, the accuracy and validity of the proposed method is verified.
