The aim of this study was to investigate the processes for evaluating the allowable bending stress. The confidence levels and the size-adjustment in standards were reviewed with experimental data. The results show that, (1) KS F 2152 was more strict than others overseas standards due to the higher confidence level. The 5% NTL of bending strengths by a method in KS F 2152 were lower than the overseas standards and more specimens were required for evaluating the structural properties according to KS F 2152. (2) Due to the absence of size-adjustment method in domestic standards, the specified size and the exponential parameters on the size-adjustment equation were reviewed by size factors. The specified size (width: 286 mm, length: 6096 mm), and the exponential parameters (w: 0.29, l: 0.14) will be suitable for developing the allowable bending stress in domestic standard. (3) The size adjusted allowable bending stresses of No. 2 grade Korean pine were lower than the allowable stresses tabulated in KBC even though less strict method (75% confidence level) to calculate 5% value was used. The allowable stresses tabulated in KBC are needed to be reviewed by continuous experimental data.
Despite Korea forest take 63.7% of the nation's territory, productivity of domestic structural lumber is low. Studies of domestic small lumbers need to be improved domestic structural timber productivity. In this study, small diameter lumber and finger joint small diameter lumber took bending test to calculate MOE and MOR. MOE of small diameter lumber was $9.3kN/mm^2$ and MOE of finger joint small diameter lumber was $15.4kN/mm^2$. Allowable standard bending stress of small diameter lumber and finger joint small diameter lumber was calculated according to ASTM D 2915. Standard allowable bending stress of small diameter lumber was $12N/mm^2$ and standard allowable bending stress of finger joint small diameter lumber was $11N/mm^2$. Standard allowable bending stress of finger joint small diameter lumber should be considered to design structural beam members.
365 pieces of domestic $38{\times}140{\times}3600mm$ Red pine structural lumber were machine graded conforming to a softwood structural lumber standard (KS F 3020). The allowable bending stresses calculated for each grade were compared with the values currently tabulated in the standard. Four calculation methods for lower $5^{th}$ percentile bending stress were non-parametric estimation with 75% confidence level, 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull distribution fit, and bending modulus of rupture (MOR)-modulus of elasticity (MOE) regression based method. Only the data set of Grades E8, E9, and E10 were statistically eligible for the $5^{th}$ percentile calculation. The MOR-MOE regression based method only was able to estimate the lower $5^{th}$ percentile values theoretically for the full range of grades. The results showed that all allowable bending stresses calculated were lower than the design values tabulated in the standard. This implies that the current machine grading system has the pitfall of structural safety. Improvement in current machine grading system could be achieved by introducing the bending strength and stiffness combination grade system.
In this study, the visual grading based on the visual characteristics and structural timber bending test were conducted for domestic yellow poplar dimension lumber. Structural performance of domestic yellow poplar dimension lumber was conducted through the evaluation of strength and stiffness. Visual grading rule of yellow poplar dimension lumber did not exist in Korea. Visual grading of yellow poplar dimension lumber was performed according to the NSLB (Northern Softwood Lumber Bureau) standard grading rules including several hardwood dimension lumber. The allowable bending stress was calculated from the results of a visual grading. Compared with NDS (National Design Specification), the yellow poplar dimension lumber showed enough strength for structural uses. In addition, the visual grading was performed according to the KFRI (Korea Forest Research Institute) grading rule to calculated allowable bending stress and to evaluated the feasibility. The yellow poplar was classified into the pine groups by the KFRI criteria regulated by specific gravity. Allowable bending stress based on weibull distribution had became highly than KFRI criteria, as No. 1 (10.0 MPa), No. 2 (7.4 MPa) and No. 3 (4.1 MPa). And the availability of yellow poplar dimension lumber for structural uses had been confirmed. The Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) of domestic yellow poplar dimension lumber had not met the NDS and KFRI criteria. However, for the use of domestic yellow poplar, average values of MOE which obtained through this test were suggested as design value for domestic yellow poplar. Design values were supposed No. 1, 2 (9,000 MPa) and No. 3 (8,000 MPa).

This study was conducted to examine the possibility of use as a structural material for ginseng cultivation facilities of recycled plastics. In order to determine the possibility that recycled plastic can replace timber used as a structural material for ginseng cultivation facilities, the specimens collected by elapsed time were compared with timber through bending tests. In addition, in order to analyze the effect of external environmental conditions on recycled plastic products, bending test was conducted with the specimens that had completed weathering test and accelerated heat aging test respectively. As a result, the bending strength of recycled plastic specimens with the elapsed time of 360 days was lower than that of timber. But bending strength of recycled plastic specimens exceeded the design allowable stress standard set by the Korea design standard (MOLIT, 2016). There was no degradation in quality of recycled plastic due to the external environment, and it was found that there would be no problem even if it was used as a structural material for ginseng cultivation facilities.
Gears are useful for power transmission due to excellent power transmission performance, low cost, and compactness. In addition, gears have constant speed ratio, compact structure, and excellent efficiency. In order to transmit higher power, the new multi-range transmission requires gears which have greater strength than the existing transmission. This study evaluates stability and durability through gear analysis of the multi-range transmission in commercial vehicles using ROMAX-DESIGNER program. Also, strength design evaluation is carried out by the analysis results which are compared with gear strength theory of AGMA standard. Bending stress and contact stress on gears are lower than their allowable stresses. Therefore, we can evaluate the safety of the gear strength design in multi-range transmission.

Since the blast vibration induced by explosives of the powder possibly provide damage of the nearby structures adjacent to the tunnel, the stability of the nearby structures should be estimated. In this study, the stability of the tunnel based on the allowable peak particle velocity of the structures as well as allowable stress of the structures presented in the concrete structural design standard was estimated with respect to the stress of the concrete lining and axial force of the rockbolt during the blasting operation at the ground surface of the pre-existing tunnel. The analyses were carried out by using $FLAC^{2D}$ which is one of the programs developed based on the finite difference method. The bending compressive stress and shear stress of the concrete lining and axial force of the rockbolt were rapidly increased when the blasting operation was conducted near the tunnel.
This study performed a structural performance evaluation of a system scaffolding for elevator installation work developed in previous studies. The structural performance was evaluated via a structural test conducted to apply the working load specified in the design standard. The deflection of the horizontal member and the stress of each member constituting the system scaffolding were measured. Consequently, the structural safety evaluation including structural behavior and required performance was performed using the deflection and stresses measured from the structural test. The structural test and safety evaluation results based on the heavy working load corresponding to the design load indicated that the deflection, which is the performance criterion of the horizontal member, did not exceed the allowable value. Further, each member's stress, which is a safety evaluation indicator, did not exceed the allowable strength for both horizontal and vertical members with bending behavior and fordable bracing with tensile behavior, while also satisfying the required safety factor. In addition, the results confirmed the safety against deformation, partial damage, and destruction owing to excessive and maximum load. Therefore, the system scaffolding developed in this study satisfies both the structural performance and safety required by the design standards; thus, it can be applied to elevator installation work sites.

ISO 12215-5 standard describes allowable stress design specifications of monohull small boat with a length of hull between 2.5 m and 24 m constructed from fiber reinforced plastics, aluminium or steel alloys, glued wood or other suitable boat building material. If small boat hull is under 2.5m in overall length or nonstandard material is used as boat building material, structural reliability of small boat hull is assured by drop test specification, but not by structural design specification in accordance with ISO 12215-5. Drop test specification of boat hull can be applied to manufactured product. But it is difficult and complicated to apply drop test specification to structural design of boat hull. In this study, we present structural design method of polyethylene boat hull on the basis of longitudinal bending strength test specification.

This Study investigates the Structural Integrity of Boats for Divers, given increased demands for Underwater and Recreational use. We conducted research on a Small Catamaran with a Moon Pool in the center of the Hull, using the Finite Element Method to calculate allowable stress based on the ISO Rule. We computed the coefficients defined in ISO 12215-5 and TC118.1225-7, and determined the suitability of using the ISO Standard and Allowable Stress Design method (ASD) by applying Longitudinal Bending Moment, Torsional moment, and Bottom Slamming Load. We also applied the Ultimate Strength Design Method (LFRD) using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). As a Result of this Research, it was found that ships with a Moon Pool do have Structural Integrity according to their Design in accordance with ISO and KR Regulations.
