Background: The surgical strategies for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) vary in terms of the anesthesia method, neurological monitoring, shunt usage, and closure technique, and no gold-standard procedure has been established yet. We aimed to analyze the feasibility and benefits of CEA under regional anesthesia (RA) and CEA under general anesthesia (GA). Methods: Between June 2012 and December 2017, 65 patients who had undergone CEA were enrolled, and their medical records were prospectively collected and retrospectively reviewed. A total of 35 patients underwent CEA under RA with cervical plexus block, whereas 30 patients underwent CEA under GA. In the RA group, a carotid shunt was selectively used for patients who exhibited negative results on the awake test. In contrast, such a shunt was used for all patients in the GA group. Results: There were no cases of postoperative stroke, cardiovascular events, or mortality. Nerve injuries were noted in 4 patients (3 in the RA group and 1 in the GA group), but they fully recovered prior to discharge. Operative time and clamp time were shorter in the RA group than in the GA group (119.29±27.71 min vs. 161.43±20.79 min, p<0.001; 30.57±6.80 min vs. 51.77±13.38 min, p<0.001, respectively). The hospital stay was shorter in the RA group than in the GA group (14.6±5.05 days vs. 18.97±8.92 days, p=0.022). None of the patients experienced a stroke or restenosis during the 27.23±20.3-month follow-up period. Conclusion: RA with a reliable awake test reduces shunt use and decreases the clamp and operative times of CEA, eventually resulting in a reduced length of hospital stay.

In order to investigate an influence of carrier trap by quantum dots (QDs) on the solar parameters, in this study, the $p^+-QD-n/n^+$ solar cells with InAs/GaAs QD active layers are fabricated, and their characteristics are investigated and compared with those of a GaAs matrix solar cell (MSC). Two different types of QD structures, the Stranski-Krastanow (SK) QD and the quasi-monolayer (QML) QD, have been introduced for the QD solar cells, and the parameters (open-circuit voltage ($V_{OC}$), short-cirucuit current ($I_{SC}$), fill factor (FF), conversion efficiency (CE)) are determined from the current-voltage characteristic curves under a standard solar illumination (AM1.5). In SK-QSC, while FF of 80.0% is similar to that of MSC (80.3%), $V_{OC}$ and $J_{SC}$ are reduced by 0.03 V and $2.6mA/cm^2$, respectively. CE is lowered by 2.6% as results of reduced $V_{OC}$ and $J_{SC}$, which is due to a carrier trap into QDs. Though another alternative structure of QML-QD to be expected to relieve the carrier trap have been firstly tried for QSC in this study, it shows negative results contrary to our expectations.

The calibration of microscopic traffic simulation models has received much attention in the simulation field. Although no standard has been established for it, a genetic algorithm (GA) has been widely employed in recent literature because of its high efficiency to find solutions in such optimization problems. However, the performance still falls short in simulation analyses to support fast decision making. This paper proposes a new calibration procedure using a dual GA and central composite design (CCD) in order to improve the efficiency. The calibration exercise goes through three major sequential steps: (1) experimental design using CCD for a quadratic response surface model (RSM) estimation, (2) 1st GA procedure using the RSM with CCD to find a near-optimal initial population for a next step, and (3) 2nd GA procedure to find a final solution. The proposed method was applied in calibrating the Gipps car-following model with respect to maximizing the likelihood of a spacing distribution between a lead and following vehicle. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a conventional calibration approach using a single GA was compared under both simulated and real vehicle trajectory data. It was found that the proposed approach enhances the optimization speed by starting to search from an initial population that is closer to the optimum than that of the other approach. This result implies the proposed approach has benefits for a large-scale traffic network simulation analysis. This method can be extended to other optimization tasks using GA in transportation studies.

As the standards organization under ISO responsible for the development of all international financial services standards, ISO/TC 68 plays a key role in the development and adoption of new technologies in the banking, brokerage and insurance industries. In this paper many of its current work projects are introduced for developing ecommerce standards. We need to discuss the recommendations on XML conversion with ISO and other international standard organizations. Each country try to adopt the international standards even though domestic technical standards and barriers. To solve this problem of interworking between these standards, harmonization activities are nedded. For development and distribution of electronic documents to be conformed to international standards, it is enough to have the role of international activities continue to supply part of the domestic industry and the trends in participation and international standard. Our principal focus is on facilitating national and international trade, through the simplification and harmonization of processes, procedures and information flows, and so contributing to the growth of global commerce.
The optimal power flow (OPF) problem was introduced by Carpentier in 1962 as a network constrained economic dispatch problem. Since then, it has been intensively studied and widely used in power system operation and planning. In the past few decades, many stochastic optimization methods such as Genetic Algorithm (GA), Evolutionary Programming (EP), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been applied to solve the OPF problem. In particular, PSO is a newly proposed population based stochastic optimization algorithm. The main idea behind it is based on the food-searching behavior of birds and fish. Compared with other stochastic optimization methods, PSO has comparable or even superior search performance for some hard optimization problems in real power systems. Nowadays, some modifications such as breeding and selection operators are considered to make the PSO superior and robust. In this paper, we propose the Modified PSO (MPSO), in which the mutation operator of GA is incorporated into the conventional PSO to improve the search performance. To verify the optimal solution searching ability, the proposed approach has been evaluated on an IEEE 3D-bus test system. The results showed that performance of the proposed approach is better than that of the standard PSO.
In this paper, optimum methods of wind-induced vibration control of high-rise buildings are mainly studied. Two optimum methods, genetic algorithms (GA) method and Rayleigh damping method, are firstly employed and proposed to perform optimum study on wind-induced vibration control, six target functions are presented in GA method based on spectrum analysis. Structural optimum analysis programs are developed based on Matlab software to calculate wind-induced structural responses. A high-rise steel building with 20-storey is adopted and 22 kinds of control plans are employed to perform comparison analysis to validate the feasibility and validity of the optimum methods considered. The results show that the distributions of damping coefficients along structural height for mass proportional damping (MPD) systems and stiffness proportional damping (SPD) systems are entirely opposite. Damping systems of MPD and GAMPD (genetic algorithms and mass proportional damping) have the best performance of reducing structural wind-induced vibration response and are superior to other damping systems. Standard deviations of structural responses are influenced greatly by different target functions and the influence is increasing slightly when higher modes are considered, as shown fully in section 5. Therefore, the influence of higher modes should be considered when strict requirement of wind-induced vibration comfort is needed for some special structures.

As computer technology continues to develop, computer networks are now widely used. As a result, there are many new intrusion types appearing and information security is becoming increasingly important. Although there are many kinds of intrusion detection systems deployed to protect our modern networks, we are constantly hearing reports of hackers causing major disruptions. Since existing technologies all have some disadvantages, we utilize algorithms, such as the fuzzy C-means (FCM) and the support vector machine (SVM) algorithms to improve these technologies. Using these two algorithms alone has some disadvantages leading to a low classification accuracy rate. In the case of FCM, self-adaptability is weak, and the algorithm is sensitive to the initial value, vulnerable to the impact of noise and isolated points, and can easily converge to local extrema among other defects. These weaknesses may yield an unsatisfactory detection result with a low detection rate. We use a genetic algorithm (GA) to help resolve these problems. Our experimental results show that the combined GA and FCM algorithm's accuracy rate is approximately 30% higher than that of the standard FCM thereby demonstrating that our approach is substantially more effective.

This paper presents an optimization method which determines locations and size of capacitors simultaneously while minimizing power losses and improving voltage profile in radial distribution systems. Especially, the cost function associated with capacitor placement is considered as step function due to banks of standard discrete capacities. Genetic algorithms(GA) are used to obtain efficiently the solution of the cost function associated with capacitors which is non-continuous and non-differentiable function. The strings in GA consist of the node number index and size of capacitors to be installed. The length mutation operator, which is able to change the length of strings in each generation, is used. The proposed method which determines locations and size of capacitors simultaneously can reduce power losses and improve' voltage profile with capacitors of minimum size. Its efficiency is proved through the application in radial distribution systems.

For companies assembling end products from sub assemblies or components, MRP (Material Requirement Planning) logic is frequently used to synchronize and pace the production activities for the required parts. However, in MRP, the planning of operational-level activities is left to short term scheduling. So, we need a good scheduling algorithm to generate feasible schedules taking into account shop floor characteristics and multi-level job structures used in MRP. In this paper, we present a GA (Genetic Algorithm) solution for this complex scheduling problem based on a new gene to reflect the machine assignment, operation sequences and the levels of the operations relative to final operation. The relative operation level is the control parameter that paces the completion timing of the components belonging to the same branch in the multi-level job hierarchy. In order to revise the fixed relative level which solutions are confined to, we apply large step transition in the first step and GA in the second step. We compare the genetic algorithm and 2-phase optimization with several dispatching rules in terms of tardiness for about forty modified standard job-shop problem instances.

This paper suggests a method to recognize the various defect patterns of a cold mill strip using a binary decision tree automatically constructed by a genetic algorithm(GA). In classifying complex patterns with high similarity like the defect patterns of a cold mill stirp, the selection of an optimal feature set and an appropriate recognizer is important to achieve high recognition rate. In this paper a GA is used to select a subset of the suitable features at each node in the binary decision tree. The feature subset with maximum fitness is chosen and the patterns are classified into two classes using a linear decision function. This process is repeated at each node until all the patterns are classified into individual classes. In this way, the classifier using the binary decision tree is constructed automatically. After constructing the binary decision tree, the final recognizer is accomplished by having neural network learning sits of standard patterns at each node. In this paper, the classifier using the binary decision tree is applied to the recognition of defect patterns of a cold mill strip, and the experimental results are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed scheme.
