  • Corrosion of pipes Is one of the most serious problems in the maintenance of water worlds. Corrosion is promoted not only by physical factors such as temperature, but also by electrochemical factors including concentration of soluble metal ions, chlorine ion, pH, DO and microorganisms. Corrosion products also affect corrosion rate. In this research, study results are summarized as follows ; 1) Corrosion test was performed for 4 weeks at $70^{\circ}C$, pH 7.0 with specimens of 4 types of metal materials used as service pipes. Corrosion rate and S.E.M were analyzed. The results were showed that corrosion 1.ate of carbon steel pipe was 4.10~5.22 $mg/\textrm{cm}^2$ . week, galvanized steel pipe 0.98~1.34$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week, Copper pipe 0.02~0.04$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week, stainless steel pipe 0.05~ 0.10$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$ . week. 2) When corrosion rate was tested for tile types of pipes at pH 7 and both $25^{\circ}C$ and $75^{\circ}C$, avaerage corrosion rate for 6 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ Ivas 2.26$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$ . week in carbon steel pipe, 1.99$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week in galvanized steel pipe, 0.26 $mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week in stainless steel pipe. • The corrugated stainless steel tubing(CSST) for the fuel gas piping system can be installed easily and quickly. It is often constructed under the ceiling and the wall which has a good flexibility and installation in comparison with iron pipe. However, the quality of the CSST is determined to depend upon the welding skill of stainless steel tubing. In this study, it is tested by controlling jet point of Ar as inert and cooling gas, and also compared with the bead state of welding point and the performance. As a result, it has the best condition when the jet point of Ar is located behind $5{\sim}10mm$ of the welding point.

  • The maximum strength of the stainless steel square and the circular hollow section columns, which are cold-formed and TIG welded, is experimented on and analyzed. The paper presents centrally compressed experiments, including stub column tests and coupon tests, on stainless steel pipe columns. A total of 24 stainless steel pipe column experiments are conducted, using the slenderness ratios ($L_k/r$ = 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70) as parameters. The experimental results were compared with the design standard curves, AIK-LSD and AISC-LRFD, AIJ-LSD, SIJ-ASD curves, and multiple column curves.

  • A single-beam gamma densitometer is utilized to measure the average void fraction in a small diameter stainless steel pipe under critical flow conditions. A typical design of a single-beam gamma densitometer is composed of a sealed gammaray source, a collimator, a scintillation detector, and a data acquisition system that includes an amplifier and a single channel analyzer. It is operated in the count mode and can be calibrated with a test pipe and various types of phantoms made of polyethylene. A good average void fraction is obtained for a small diameter pipe with various flow regimes of the core, annular, stratified, and bubbly flows. Several factors influencing the performance of the gamma densitometer are examined, including the distance between the source and the detector, the measuring time, and the ambient temperature. The void fraction is measured during an adiabatic downward two-phase critical flow in a vertical pipe. The test pipe has an inner diameter of 10.9 mm and a thickness of 3.2 mm. The average void fraction was reasonably measured for a two-phase critical flow in the presence of nitrogen gas.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the welds characteristics of the 205 stainless steel pipe for application of street pole material. The welds corrosion behavior of STS 205 pipe in 0.1 N sulphuric acid solution and 5% NaCl solution at room temperature was studied using both salt spray test and potentiodynamic polarization experiment. The morphology and components of corrosion products on surface of STS 205 pipe welds were investigated using SEM/EDX. The tensile strength and yield strength values of STS 205 plate were 715 MPa and 369 MPa respectively. The microvickers hardness values of STS 205 pipe welds were slightly increased than that of STS 304 pipe welds. Corrosion current density($I_{corr.}$) and critical current density($I_{crit.}$) values of STS 205 pipe welds in 3.5% NaCl solution were $1.89{\times}10^{-6}$ $A/cm^2$ and $15.8{\times}10 ^{-6}$ $A/cm^2$. The corrosion resistance of SIS 205 pipe welds was similar to its STS 304 pipe welds. The STS 205 and 304 pipe welds passive films were chromium oxide. Especially, the STS 205 pipe welds showed good corrosion resistance in 0.1 N sulphuric acid. This is attributed to the forming of protective chromium oxide on the surface of STS 205 pipe welds.

  • AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel is widely used for LNG pipes for LNG transmission thanks to its good metallurgical and mechanical properties. In the present research, impact toughness of a gas tungsten arc welded AISI 304 stainless steel pipe was evaluated between room and liquid nitrogen ($-196^{\circ}C$) test temperatures. In addition, a comparative study was made of the fracture behavior of FCC crystal structured stainless steel weldments and BCC crystal structured mild steels(A-grade and SS400). The results showed a slight decrease in the impact energy of the AISI 304 base metal, heat affected zone(HAZ), and welded zone with decreasing test temperature. In addition, the welded metal has the highest absorbed impact energy, followed by HAZ and the base metal.

  • Rubbing-roller is used for manufacturing liquid crystal display, and static displacement of the rubbing-roller becomes bigger as length of the rubbing roller made of aluminum is getting longer. Therefore, material of the rubbing-roller is changed from aluminum to CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced plastic). Recently thermal spraying is applied to manufacturing process of long rubbing-roller. The thermal spraying has disadvantages such as increment of manufacturing time and fraction defective caused by density of stainless steel particle. In this study, fitting process by drawing was suggested and FEM analysis with Tsai-Wu failure theory and fitting experiments are carried out to find adequate shrink allowance. The suggested shrink allowance gives proper adhesive force, and CFRP failure is not occurred. Furthermore, the fitting process is applied to long rubbing-roller and availability of the fitting process is studied by measurement of roundness, straightness and shear strength.

  • Metal sealing is used to connecting the parts between valves and fuel pipes for a FCEV which utilizes hydrogen gas of 700 bar. Instead of general carbon steel, stainless steel is the primary material used to manufacture fuel pipes due to hydrogen embrittlement. The shape of deformation between metals is an important factor on the air-tightness of the metal to metal contact. Since the stainless steel pipe is hardened using the plastic forming during the tip shaping stage, this work hardening could have an effect on the deformed shape and characteristics of contact surfaces in fastening of pipes. In this paper, the deformation history of the pipe model was considered in order to analyze the hydrogen-tightness on the metal sealing part. The contact distance and the forward displacement for fastening were compared using experimental results and the simulation results. The simulation of the effect of material change on the fitting body demonstrated that the hardness or the strength of the formed tip of the pipe was designed to a proper valued level since the characteristics of the contact surface was exhibited better when the strength of the pipe was lower than that of the fitting body.

  • In case the systems have radioactivity, toxic liquid or expensive fluid, and have to be performed repair work at one point of the system pipe, the formation of an internal ice plug by the removal of heat from the pipe is often consideredas a useful method. In this procedure, an annular jacket is placed around the pipe, and the jacket is then filled with liquid Nitrogen(-196.deg. C). Thermal analysis by the finite element method based on the laboratory experiments has been constructed. The result of the finite element analysis on the experimental model shows to be reasonable, and thus the finite element analysis for different pipe size, material and thickness has been performed to see if the ice plugging procedure in various applications can be safely performed without possibility of damage to the pipe. It has been confirmed that in carbon steel pipes the maximum stress is found around the boundary of the freezing jacket, and the stress increases as pipe thickness increases, but the maximum stress shows no consistency along the increment of the pipe diameter. The maximum stresses appear lower than yield stress in carbon steel. It has been also shown that in stainless steel pipes the maximum stresses are also found around the boundary of the freezing jacket, but almost the same value in spite of different pipe size an thickness, and the maximum stresses show slightly higher than the yield stress of the stainless steel.
