The basic concept of ‘gear profile modification’ is to change a part of the involute profile to reduce the load in that area and appropriate profile modifications can help gears to run quietly and resist scoring., pitting, and tooth breakage. In this study, the modification of tooth profile to make a smooth transmission of the normal loads in spur gears has been developed. The modified tooth profile has been determined by the total deflection at contact points. We also compared our results with other experimental results.

Strength Design method for involute spur gears is developed. The developed gear strength design system can design the optimized gear that minimize the number of pinion teeth with face tooth. Method of optimization is matrix form which is developed from this study. Design variables are transmitted power, gear volume, gear ratio, allowable contact stress and allowable bending stress, etc. Gear design method developed this study can be apply to the gears of plants, machine tools, automobiles.

In this study, the design of prestressed die for spur gear forging have been investigated. The stress concentration at notch of the die insert is very important in the design of die for the forging of spur gear such as non-axisymmetric geometry. In the previous study, the flexible tolerance method was used in order to search the optimal value of design variables considering the constrain conditions. In the design process, it was also involved the safety factor to the yield strength of each ring by considering allowable tensile or compressive hoop stress in each ring. Using this technique, the die deign for spur gear forging has been successfully performed without yielding of the die after shrink fitting and during forging.
Recently, precision forging techniques are applied to manufacture spur gears. Compared to conventional machining, they produce parts of better mechanical properties and less residual stresses with a much higher production rate. In the present investigation a rigid-plastic three dimensional finite element method was applied to analyze hot forging and cold sizing of a spur gear by closed dies. The involute curve of a tooth profile was approximated by a circle close to the curve. Results of the analyses make it possible to predict local strengths of the gear die failure and an appropriate preform for cold sizing. It was found that the preform for cold sizing. It was found that the preform for the cold sizing is the most important because it determines whether the gears especially teeth can be successfully formed.

Pressure and film thickness of contacting surfaces between teeth of the involute spur gear in lubricated condition were studied by a numerical method. Dynamics of the gear and pinion was considered to gel ail accurate initial clearance between gear teeth. The 3-dimensional non-steady elastohydrodanamic lubrication analysis on the gear teeth showed a slight higher pressure at the inlet region of the contacting face as well as pressure spike at the outlet region and a more thick film thickness than that of steady condition.

A four-degree-of-freedom non-linear model with time varying mesh stiffness has been developed for the dynamic analysis of spur gear trains. The model includes a spur gear pair, two shafts, two inertias representing load and prime mover. In the model, developed several factors such as time varying mesh stiffness and damping, separation of teeth, teeth collision, various gear errors and profile modifications have been considered. Two computer programs are developed to calculate stiffness of a gear pair and transmission error and the dynamic analysis of modeled system using time integration method. Dynamic tooth and mesh forces, dynamic factors are calculated. Numerical examples have been given, which shows the time varying mesh stiffness ha a significant effect upon the dynamic tooth force and torsional vibrations.

Construction equipment is heavily loaded during normal operation. In recent years, there is a trend that lower gear noise levels are demanded for drivers to avoid annoyance and fatigue during operation. For articulated hauler's final drive, meshing transmission error(T.E.) is the excitation that leads the tonal noise known as gear whine, and radiated gear whine is also the dominant source of noise in the whole gearbox. This paper presents a method for the analysis of the tooth profile modification, and the prediction of transmission error under the loaded torques for the spur gear pair of the articulated hauler's final drive. And the transmission error, transmission error harmonics and contact stress are also calculated and compared before and after tooth modification under one torque. The simulation result shows that the transmission error and contact stress under the loads can be minimized by the appropriate tooth profile modification.

In this study, additive manufacturing technology was applied to restore a planner miller that was unusable due to aging. The drive spur gear of the planner miller was inoperable due to many defects in the teeth. The shape of the defective gear teeth was restored by deposition of the defective teeth using the DED method. However, as the location of the deposition head and the location of the set origin became farther, the deposition shape was different from the modeling shape. Nonetheless, since the modeling of the deposition part was designed to be larger than the tooth shape of the original gear, it was possible to completely restore all gear teeth through post-processing. The arrangement interval of the flow lines of the deposition part was narrower than that of the substrate. The hardness of the substrate was 172 HV, and that of the deposition part was 345 HV, which was twice as high as that of the substrate.
In this study, the sliding wear in spur gears, using Archard's wear model, is analyzed. Formulas of tooth sliding wear depth along the line of action are derived. The tooth profile is modified Id make a smooth transmission of the normal loads and the cylinder profile for reducing the pressure spike is suggested. The sliding wear rate is calculated with these profiling results. We expect these modification methods to contribute to the reduction of sliding wear not only in the root, but the tip of tooth and tooth edge.

In electric agricultural machine the gearhead is needed to convert the high speed low torque rotation motion generated by DC motor to lower speed high torque motion used by the vehicle. The gearhead consist of several spur gears works as reduction gears. Spur gear have straight tooth and are parallel to the axis of the wheel. Spur gears are the most easily visualized gears that transmit motion between two parallel shafts and easy to produce. The modeling and simulation of spur gears in DC motor gearhead is important to predict the actual motion behavior. A pair of spur gear tooth in action is generally subjected to two types of cyclic stress: contact stress and bending stress including bending fatigue. The stress may not attain their maximum values at the same point of contact fatigue. These types of failure can be minimized by analysis of the problem during the design stage and creating proper tooth surface profile with proper manufacturing methods. To improve its life expectation in this study modal and stress analysis of gearhead is simulated using ansys work bench software based on finite element method (FEM). The modal analysis was done to understand gearhead deformation behaviour when vibration occurs. FEM static stress analysis is also simulated on gearhead to simulate the gear teeth bending stress and contact stress behavior. This methodology serves as an approach for gearhead design evaluation, and the study of gear stress behavior in DC motor gearhead which is needed in the small workshop scale industries.
