  • In an effort to regulate the mammalian cell behavior in entrapment with a gel, we have functionalized hydrogels with the putative cell-binding (-Arg-Gly-Asp-)(RGD) domain. An adhesion molecule of Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (GRGDS) peptides, a cell recognition ligand, was induced into thermo-reversible hydrogels, composed of N-isopropylacrylamide with small amounts of acrylic acid (typically 2-5 $mol\%$ in feed), as a biomimetic extracellular matrix (ECM). The GRGDS containing a p(NiPAAm-co-AAc) copolymer gel was studied in vitro for its ability to promote the spreading and viability of cells by introducing a GRGDS sequence. Hydrogel with no adhesion molecule was a poor ECM for adhesion, permiting spreading of only $3\%$ of the seeded cells for 36h. By immobilizing the peptide linkage into the hydrogel, the conjugation of RGD promoted $50\%$ of proliferation for 36h. However, the GREDS sequence, nonadhesive peptide linkage, conjugated hydrogel showed only $5\%$ of the seeded cell for the same time period. In addition, with the serum-free medium, only GRGDS peptides conjugated to hydrogel was able to promotecell spreading, while there was no cell proliferation in the hydrogel without GRGDS. Thus, the GRGDS peptide-conjugated thermo-reversible hydrogel specifically mediated the cell spreading. This result suggests that utilization of peptide sequences conjugating with the cell-adhesive motifs can enhance the degree of cell surface interaction and influence the long-term formation of ECM in vitro.

  • In this paper, we proposed spreading code slicing technique for efficient transmitter detection in AT-DMB system with single frequency network. At the transmitter, the spreading code for transmitter identification inserted using slicing technique on forehead of null symbol and then transmitted. In this point, it requires high correlation characteristic spreading code. At the receiver, peak to peak value calculated by correlation process before signal demodulation. The transmitter information by proposed technique is employed to implement the single frequency network (SFN) which is proposed for solving a frequency inefficiency problem of the MFN. The results of the paper can be applied to wireless multimedia digital broadcasting system.

  • In a multi-bandwidth CDMA system, the performance of multiple order selection combining rake receivers are analyzed according to the spreading bandwidth of the system and the delay spread of the Rayleigh fading channel. The results for various channel environments indicate a tradeoff between total received signal energy and multipath fading immunity. Increasing the occupied bandwidth of the system(wide-bandwidth spreading) gives better performance for small delay spread environments, while gathering more energy(narrow-bandwidth spreading)gives better performance for large delay spread environments. It is shown that the performance difference between low and high order selection combining grows larger as the spreading bandwidth increases. It is also noted that performance degrades by increasing the bandwidth above a certain point and the optimum spreading bandwidth for each channel environment decreases as the delay spread of the channel increases.

  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics of the ex-vessel core melt (corium) were investigated using a commercial CFD code along with the experimental data on the spreading of corium available in the literature (VULCANO VE-U7 test). In the numerical simulation of the unsteady two-phase flow, the volume-of-fluid model was applied for the spreading and interfacial surface formation of corium with the surrounding air. The effects of the key parameters were evaluated for the corium spreading, including the radiation, decay heat, temperature-dependent viscosity and initial temperature of corium. The results showed a reasonable trend of corium progression influenced by the changes in the radiation, decay heat, temperature-dependent viscosity and initial temperature of corium. The modeling of the viscosity appropriate for corium and the radiative heat transfer was critical, since the front progression and temperature profiles were strongly dependent on the models. Further development is required for the code to consider the formation of crust on the surfaces of corium and the interaction with the substrate.

  • In this study, the usability evaluation of a menu-structure was performed using spreading activation model with respect to human's memory retrieval. Spreading Activation Model is effectively used to understand the process of information retrieval, so it can be used as a theoretical background for modeling of the process of human's information retrieval. For spreading activation test (SAT), subjects were presented with 67 pairs of menu titles, which consist of a menu title in the high level menu item and a menu title for the next lower level menu item, from Korea University's web site. For performance tests, three scenarios were developed with longer reaction times and ambiguous associations found in the SAT to reflect the existing problems of the website. As a result, the SAT was found to bean effective tool to enhance the website usability because the SAT could bea substitute for the performance test with a high correlation $({\rho}=0.735,\;{\alpha}=0.05)$. After remaining menu titles with slow reaction times and ambiguous associations found in SAT, the website usability was significantly improved with faster reaction times and less ambiguous associations proven with smaller number of web-page visits. Therefore, the SAT could be used as a methodology to design and evaluate the user-centered menu structure related to human's association structure.

  • The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of spreading behavior of the sizing agents (AKD or dialkyl ketone) on the sizing development of AKD-sized paper. There was a direct relationship between the spreading behavior of the sizing agents and their melting points. Both AKD and dialkyl ketone showed no substantial spreading until the temperature reaches to their melting points. Consequently, dialkyl ketone did not provide sizing development when the paper was heat-treated below $75^{\circ}C$, while AKD provided sizing effect even the paper heated at $50^{\circ}C$. The ketone, however, provided rather higher sizing effect than that of AKD, when the paper was heat-treated over $100^{\circ}C$. This result means that the ketone also gives sizing development to paper, moreover the ketone could give higher sizing effect to paper than AKD when it was melted and well spreaded on the fiber surface. While the ketone introduced to papers from hydrolyzed AKD emulsion could not contribute to sizing development.

  • On April 27,1993, a forest fire occurred in Morito-area, Manba-city, Gunma-prefecture Japan. Under the prevailing strong winds, the fire spread and extended to the largest scale ever in Gunma-prefecture. The author chartered a helicopter on May 5, one week after the fire was extinguished, and took aerial photos of tile damaged area, and investigated the condition. of the fire through field survey and data collection. The burnt area extended. over about 100 hectares, and the damage amounted to about 190 million yen (about two million dollar). The fire occurred at a steep mountainous area and under strong winds, therefore, md and topography strongly facilitated the spreading, It is the purpose of this paper to report a damage investigation of the fire and to develop the forecasting method of forest fires based on the topographical analysis and spreading speed of fire. In the first place, I analyze the topographical structure of the regions which became the bject of this study with some topographical factors, and construct a land form classification ap. Secondly, I decide the dangerous condition of each region in the land form classification map according to the direction of the wind and spreading speed of f'kre. In the present paper, I try to forecast forest fires in Morito area, and the basic results for the forecasting method of forest fires were obtained with the topographical classification system and spreading speed of fire.

  • Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading has been the most extensive damage to pile foundations during earthquakes. However, a case of pile failure was reported despite the fact that a large margin of safety factor was employed in their design. This means that the current seismic design method of pile is not agreeable with the actual failure mechanism of pile. Newly proposed failure mechanism of pile is a pile failure based on buckling instability. In this study, failure behavior of pile embedded in liquefied soil deposits was analyzed considering lateral spreading and buckling instability performing 1g shaking table test. As a result, it can be concluded that the pile subjected to excessive axial loads ($near\;P_{cr}$) can fail by buckling instability during liquefaction. When lateral spreading took place in sloping grounds, lateral spreading increased lateral deflection of pile and reduced the buckling load, promoting more rapid collapse. In addition, buckling shape of pile was observed. In the ease of pile buckling, hinge formed at the middle of the pile, not at the bottom. And in sloping grounds, location of hinge got loiter compared with level ground because of the effects of lateral spreading.

  • The aim of this research is to analyze the characteristics of a core melt discharged from the reactor vessel and the spreading behavior the core melt in the reactor cavity of the SMART. First, a severe accident sequence under conservative conditions is simulated by the MELCOR code to obtain the conditions for an analysis of the spreading behavior and coolability of the ex-vessel melt. Second, the spreading behavior and coolability of the ex-vessel melt are analyzed by the MELTSPREAD code. The level, temperature, and pressure of the water in the cavity as well as the temperature, mass, composition, and discharge velocity of the melt were utilized to construct the ex-vessel analysis. The melt spread only to part of the cavity, and that the height of the corium in a static state was less than 25 cm. The characteristics of a small modular reactor on the spreading behavior and coolability of melt were analyzed. In the SMART, the amount of melt discharged into the cavity is relatively small and the area of the cavity is sufficiently large when compared to a high-power pressurized water reactor. It was found that the coolability of an ex-vessel core melt can be sufficiently secured.
