In the dental field, the 3D tooth model in which each tooth can be manipulated individually is an essential component for the simulation of orthodontic surgery and treatment. To reconstruct such a tooth model from CT slices, we need to define the accurate boundary of each tooth from CT slices. However, the global threshold method, which is commonly used in most existing 3D reconstruction systems, is not effective for the tooth segmentation in the CT image. In tooth CT slices, some teeth touch with other teeth and some are located inside of alveolar bone whose intensity is similar to that of teeth. In this paper, we propose an image segmentation algorithm based on B-spline curve fitting to produce smooth tooth regions from such CT slices. The proposed algorithm prevents the malfitting problem of the B-spline algorithm by providing accurate initial tooth boundary for the fitting process. This paper proposes an optimal threshold scheme using the intensity and shape information passed by previous slice for the initial boundary generation and an efficient B-spline fitting method based on genetic algorithm. The test result shows that the proposed method detects contour of the individual tooth successfully and can produce a smooth and accurate 3D tooth model for the simulation of orthodontic surgery and treatment.

For membrane structure, there are three main steps in design and construction, which are form finding, statistical load analysis, and cutting patterning. Unlike the first two stages, the step of cutting pattern involves the translation of a double-curved surface in 3D space into a 2D plane with minimal error. For economic reasons, the seam lines of generated cutting patterns rely greatly on the geodesic line. Generally, as searching regions of the seam line are plane elements in the step of shape analysis, the seam line is not a smooth curve, but an irregularly divided straight line. So, it is how we make an irregularly divided straight line a smooth curve that defines the quality of the pattern. Accordingly, in this paper, we analyzed interpolation schemes using spline, and apply these methods to cutting pattern generation on the curved surface. To generate the pattern, three types of spline functions were used, i.e., cubic spline function, B-spline, and least-square spline approximation, and simple model and the catenary-shaped membrane was adopted to examine the result of generation. The result of comparing the approximation curves by the number of elements and the number of extracted nodes of simple model revealed that the seam line for less number of extracted nodes with large number of elements were more efficient, and the least-square spline approximation provided smoother seam line than other methods.
In the recognition of similar patterns like profile contours of human faces, feature measure plays important role. We extracted effective and general feature by B-spline approximation. The nodes and vertices of the approximated curve are normalized and used as features. Since the features have both local property of curvature extrema and global property by B-spline approximation, they are superior to those of curvature extrema of the profile contour. For the image data of six sets of 56 persons, some of which are ill-made, averaged accuracy rate of 97.6 % is obtained in recognizing combinational 333 test samples.

In vector GIS, natural linear entities (called linear entitles) are usually represented by a set of line segments. As an alternative of the line segments, curve segments can be used to represent the linear entities. The curve segments, as one-dimensional spatial objects, we generated by spline interpolation technique such as Bezier technique. In an effort to improve its accuracy in resembling the linear entities, the Bezier technique was modified generating a new technique (called New technique) (Kiyun, 1998). In this paper, validity of the New technique was tested. Test focused on answering two questions: (1) whether or not the curve segments from the New technique replace line segments so as to enhance the accuracy of representations of linear entities, and (2) whether or not the curve segments from the New technique represent the linear entities more accurately than curve segments from the Bezier technique. Answering these two questions entailed two hypothesis tests. For test data, a series of hydrologic lines on 7.5-minute USGS map series were selected. Test were done using t-test method and statistical inferences were made from the results. Test results indicated that curve segments from both the Bezier and New techniques represent the linear entities more accurately than the line segments do. In addition, curve segments from the New technique represent the linear entities more accurately than the line segments from the Bezier technique do at probability level 69% or higher.

The body structure of a bus is generally assembled by using various spot welded box sectional members. The shape of window pillar joint is ordinarily built up by T-type member. It has been shown that T-type member has problems like high stress concentrations, low fatigue strength and low structural rigidity. In this study, to solve these problems a new approach to optimize the design of the bus window pillar joint was tried by FEM analysis and experiments. To describe the shape of the gusset connecting the vertical and horizontal members of the T-type window pillar joint B-spline curve was adopted and this curve was optimized . It was found that the new model developed could effectively improve fatigue durability an structural rigidity.

Color segmentation takes great attentions since a color is an effective and robust visual cue for characterizing one object from other objects. Color segmentation is, however, suffered from color variation induced from irregular illumination changes. This paper proposes a reliable color modeling approach in HSI (Hue-Saturation-Intensity) rotor space considering intensity information by adopting B-spline curve fitting to make a mathematical model for statistical characteristics of a color with respect to brightness. It is based on the fact that color distribution of a single-colored object is not invariant with respect to brightness variations even in HS (Hue-Saturation) plane. The proposed approach is applied for the segmentation of human skin areas successfully under various illumination conditions.

The detection method of curves for the lanes which is powerful for the variation by utilizing the lane variation vector and cardinal spline on the inverse perspective transformation screen images which do not required the camera parameters are suggested in this paper. This method detects the lane area by setting the expected lane area in the s frame and next s+1 frame where the inverse perspective transformation and entire process of the lane filter are adapted, and expects the points of lane location in the next frames with the lane variation vector calculation from the detected lane areas. The scan area is set from the nextly expected lane position and new lane positions are detected within these areas, and the lane variation vectors are renewed with the detected lane position and the lanes are detected with application of cardinal spline for the control points inside the lane areas. The suggested method is a powerful method for curved lane detection, but it was adopted to the linear lanes too. It showed an excellent lane detection speed of about 20ms in processing a frame.

This paper analyzes the problems that occurred in the magnification process for a fine input image and investigates a method to improve the blurring of magnified image. This paper applies a curve interpolation algorithm in CAD/CAM for the same test images with the existing image algorithm in order to improve the blurring of magnified image. As a result, the nearest neighbor interpolation, which is the most frequently applied algorithm for the existing image interpolation algorithm, shows that the identification of a magnified image is not possible. Therefore, this study examines an interpolation of gray-level data by applying a low-pass spatial filter and verifies that a bilinear interpolation presents a lack of property that accentuates the boundary of the image where the image is largely changed. The periodic B-spline interpolation algorithm used for curve interpolation in CAD/CAM can remove the blurring but shows a problem of obscuration, and the Ferguson' curve interpolation algorithm shows a more sharpened image than that of the periodic B-spline algorithm. For the future study, hereafter, this study will develop an interpolation algorithm that has an excellent improvement for the boundary of the image and continuous and flexible property by using the NURBS, Ferguson' complex surface, and Bezier surface used in CAD/CAM engineering based on the results of this study.
Piecewise linear (G01-based) tool paths generated by CAM systems lack $G_1$ and $G_2$ continuity. The discontinuity causes vibration and unnecessary hesitation during machining. To ensure efficient high-speed machining, a method to improve the continuity of the tool paths is required, such as B-spline fitting that approximates G01 paths with B-spline curves. Conventional B-spline fitting approaches cannot be directly used for tool path B-spline fitting, because they have shortages such as numerical instability, lack of chord error constraint, and lack of assurance of a usable result. Progressive and Iterative Approximation for Least Squares (LSPIA) is an efficient method for data fitting that solves the numerical instability problem. However, it does not consider chord errors and needs more work to ensure ironclad results for commercial applications. In this paper, we use LSPIA method incorporating Energy term (ELSPIA) to avoid the numerical instability, and lower chord errors by using stretching energy term. We implement several algorithm improvements, including (1) an improved technique for initial control point determination over Dominant Point Method, (2) an algorithm that updates foot point parameters as needed, (3) analysis of the degrees of freedom of control points to insert new control points only when needed, (4) chord error refinement using a similar ELSPIA method with the above enhancements. The proposed approach can generate a shape-preserving B-spline curve. Experiments with data analysis and machining tests are presented for verification of quality and efficiency. Comparisons with other known solutions are included to evaluate the worthiness of the proposed solution.
