The area of gear dynamics has recently been the focus of many studies. A new tooth profile modification was proposed by author for reducing vibration and noise of involute gears. A comparative dynamic analysis of the gear drive with the involute tooth and the modified tooth profile(using cubic splines) is performed to the unuformal transmission error reduces the gear vibration and noise due to less dynamic tooth load variation during the meshing cycle. This work also include a gear design process by the meaning of a practical approach, such as Win95 based simulation program with all using basic geardesign variables. Especially this program enables gear designers to dynamic analysis based on G.U.I.

In animating an articulated entity with motion capture data, especially when the reconstruction is based on forward kinematics, there could be large discrepancies at the end effector. The small errors in joint angles tend to be amplified as the forward kinematics positioning progresses toward the end effector. In this paper, we present an algorithm that enhances the motion capture data to reduce positional errors at the end effector. The process is optimized so that the characteristics of the original joint angle data is preserved in the resulting motion. The frames at which the end-effector position needs to be accurate are designated as“keyframes”(e.g. starting and ending frames). In the algorithm, corrections by inverse kinematics are performed at sparse keyframes and they are interpolated with a cubic spline which produces a curve best approximating the measured joint angles. The experiment proves that our algorithm is a valuable tool to improve measured motion especially when end-effector trajectory contains a special goal.
For the shape design of electromagnetic devices using the FEM, the choice of design parameters influence to the success of the optimization process. If the design parameter distribution has a one to one corespondence with finite element model, we can encounter not only serious accuracy problem but also obtain a zigzag shape along the interface. The nodes between those design parameters can be parameterized by interpolating using one among many interpolation methods. The conventional parameterization of design parameters has a limit of application for shape, because design parameters and movable nodes are linearly intepolated. In this paper, using the B-spline curve that use to present any interfaces in computer graphics, the curvilinear parameterization between design parameters and node points is compared with the linear parameterization.

In an effort to reduce the evaluation time of the precision of manufactured disk cams, an effective measuring method with an exclusively built profile-measuring machine and subsequent data analysis procedure is proposed. The design and measuring data are interpolated by cubic spline curves to compute the precision error which is defined by the maximum and minimum distances between two curves. The minimum zone criterion of ISO is employed to evaluate the form error, and genetic algorithm is used to search the orientation and location of design data for the measured data which minimizes the form error. The proposed system was applied to marine engine cams, and it shows that the form error is reduced to 30% down compared with the method which minimizes the form error with the assumption that the centers of measured data design cam curve are identical.

Depending on geographical features and error sources in the survey field, inaccurate data is inevitable in GPS kinematic survey for positioning with feature codes. In this study, the trimmed mean and the first order differential equation are used to develop an inaccurate positioning data detection algorithm, and a cubic spline curve and a linear polynomial are used to interpolate the inaccurate data. Based on interpolated data, a digital map for 30 km range of rural highway is produced and a corresponding GIS coverage map is obtained by analyzing and solving the problem associated with the map.

The leaning angle optimization of turbine blade using the genetic algorithm was conducted in this paper. The calculation CFD technique was based upon the Diagonalized Alternating Directional Implicit scheme(DADI) with algebraic turbulence modeling. The leaning angle of VKI turbine blade was represented using B-spline curve. The control points are the design variable. Genetic algorithm was taken into account as an optimization tool. The objective was to minimize the total pressure loss. The optimized final geometry shows the better aerodynamic performance compared with the initial turbine blade.
To survive in the current shipbuilding industry, it is of vital importance for shipyards to have the ship components' accuracy evaluated efficiently during most of the manufacturing steps. Evaluating components' accuracy by comparing each component's point cloud data scanned by laser scanners and the ship's design data formatted in CAD cannot be processed efficiently when (1) extract components from point cloud data include irregular obstacles endogenously, or when (2) registration of the two data sets have no clear direction setting. This paper presents reformative point cloud data processing methods to solve these problems. K-d tree construction of the point cloud data fastens a neighbor searching of each point. Region growing method performed on the neighbor points of the seed point extracts the continuous part of the component, while curved surface fitting and B-spline curved line fitting at the edge of the continuous part recognize the neighbor domains of the same component divided by obstacles' shadows. The ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm conducts a registration of the two sets of data after the proper registration's direction is decided by principal component analysis. By experiments conducted at the shipyard, 200 curved shell plates are extracted from the scanned point cloud data, and registrations are conducted between them and the designed CAD data using the proposed methods for an accuracy evaluation. Results show that the methods proposed in this paper support the accuracy evaluation targeted point cloud data processing efficiently in practice.
Recently the instantaneous center concept has been to understand the biomechanics by which a tissue derangement causes a mechanical derangement in human joint. Therefore, to understand the biomechanics of temporomandibular joint (T.M.J.) as a part of human joint, it is necessary to clarify the instantaneous center of rotation (I.C.R.) in the mandibular movement. Twenty male subjects without T.M.J. disorder and mandibular deviation during the mandibular movement were selected for this study. The habitual opening and closing paths were recorded on the paper of the sagittal metal plate by two pencil markers connected to the resin open clutch attached on the lower teeth, which was designed for this study. The coordinates of the 33-target points and the 109-anatomical landmarks were obtained using a Summagraphic digitizer connected to a 18AT computer. The original raw data of the opening and closing paths were smoothed by B-spline curve fitting technique and then the I.C.R. pathways were determined mathematically by the computer using algorithm for finding the I.C.R. of a planer rigid body model. Also the opening and closing movements of the mandible were simulated according to the determined I.C.R. The results obtained from this study were as follows. 1. At the early opening and the last closing, I.C.R's were almost distributed around the mastoid process outside the mandibular body without the presence in the region of the mandibular condyle. 2. The I.C.R. pathway showed variable patterns to each subject at the opening and closing movements. 3. The K constant with uniform pattern was obtained by the rotation angle times the radius, which was assumed to the index of the mandibular movement. 4. The opening and closing movements of the mandible were simulated by the I.C.R. pathways at the habitual opening and closing movements. 5. The mandibular condyle was rotated or translated accordng to the relative rotation angle and radius of the determinant factors of K contant.

The existing CCTV has limitation such as problem on usage of the off-line type of recorded image for specific investigation, and requirement on interactive operator intervention for real-time surveillance. Therefore, it is required to develop the intelligent CCTV equipped with various functionalities in order to overcome drawbacks mentioned above. In this paper, implementation methods of image-based virtual fence were proposed by using the spline curves with supplied control for setup of surveillance area. In addition, pre-alarm region within the predefined distance was established with tangent and normal lines extracted from control points. The image-based virtual fence can be used for remote detection of intrusion and provision of real-time intrusion alarm, and can be expected to use in safety-related application areas including security and crime prevention.
The absence of excitation measurements may pose a big challenge in the application of structural damage identification owing to the fact that substantial effort is needed to reconstruct or identify unknown input force. To address this issue, in this paper, an iterative strategy, a synergy of Tikhonov regularization method for force identification and modified Jaya algorithm (M-Jaya) for stiffness parameter identification, is developed for damage identification with partial output-only responses. On the one hand, the probabilistic clustering learning technique and nonlinear updating equation are introduced to improve the performance of standard Jaya algorithm. On the other hand, to deal with the difficulty of selection the appropriate regularization parameters in traditional Tikhonov regularization, an improved L-curve method based on B-spline interpolation function is presented. The applicability and effectiveness of the iterative strategy for simultaneous identification of structural damages and unknown input excitation is validated by numerical simulation on a 21-bar truss structure subjected to ambient excitation under noise free and contaminated measurements cases, as well as a series of experimental tests on a five-floor steel frame structure excited by sinusoidal force. The results from these numerical and experimental studies demonstrate that the proposed identification strategy can accurately and effectively identify damage locations and extents without the requirement of force measurements. The proposed M-Jaya algorithm provides more satisfactory performance than genetic algorithm, Gaussian bare-bones artificial bee colony and Jaya algorithm.
