  • This paper presents an error-bounded B-spline fitting technique to approximate unorganized data within a prescribed error tolerance. The proposed approach includes two main steps: leastsquares minimization and error-bounded approximation. A B-spline hypervolume is first described as a data representation model, which includes its mathematical definition and the data structure for implementation. Then we present the least-squares minimization technique for the generation of an approximate B-spline model from the given data set, which provides a unique solution to the problem: overdetermined, underdetermined, or ill-conditioned problem. We also explain an algorithm for the error-bounded approximation which recursively refines the initial base model obtained from the least-squares minimization until the Euclidean distance between the model and the given data is within the given error tolerance. The proposed approach is demonstrated with some examples to show its usefulness and a good possibility for various applications.

  • In this paper a spline function solution for the ultimate strength of steel members and member structures is derived based on total Lagrangian formulation. The displacements of members along longitudinal and transverse directions are interpolated by one-order B spline functions and three-order hybrid spline functions respectively. Equilibrium equations are established according to the principle of virtual work. All initial imperfections of members and effects of loading, unloading and reloading of material are taken into account. The influence of the instability of members on structural behavior can be included in analyses. Numerical examples show that the method of this paper can satisfactorily analyze the elasto-plastic large deflection problems of planar steel member and member structures.

  • The application of cubic spline is presented for basic curve (DRD motion) of cam motion. The purpose of this paper is to achieve better dynamic characteristics than general cam curves. A cubic spline is a piecewise function that is continuous in displacement, velocity and acceleration. The best cam curve is obtained by changing the weights of the object function. So the method can be used to any machine system case by case. For the proposed object function, the result has improved all characteristics such as velocity, acceleration and jerk compared with that of the modified sine curve.

  • This research presents modeling of a functional surface that is constructed with a free-formed surface. The modeling of functional surfaces, being introduced in this paper, adopts a modified B-spline that utilizes an approximating technique. The modified B-Spline is constructed with altered control vertices. It is applied to measure the surface of an impeller blade. This research builds an algorithm accepting inputs of measured points. Generating the cutter-paths for NC machining employs the model of the constructed surfaces. The machined surfaces that are generated in several cases are compared with each other in the aspect of machining accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a new weaving trajectory algorithm for the are welding of a articulated manipulator. The algorithm uses the theory of Bezier spline. We make a comparison between the conventional algorithms using Catmull-Rom curve and the new algorithms rising Bezier spline. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated based on the MATLAB environment in order to illustrate its good performance. The algorithm has been implemented on to the industrial manipulator of DR6 so as to show its real possibility. Through simulations and real implementations, the proposed algorithm can result in high-speed and flexible weaving trajectory planning and can reduce the processing time because it needs one-half calculation compared to the conventional algorithm using Catmull-Rom curve.

  • Physically-based rendering is an image synthesis technique based on simulation of physical interactions between light and surface materials. Since generated images are highly photorealistic, physically-based rendering has become an indispensable tool in advanced design visualization for manufacturing and architecture as well as in film VFX and animations. Especially, BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function) is critical in realistic visualization of materials since it models how an incoming light is reflected on the surface in terms of intensity and outgoing angles. In this paper, we introduce techniques to represent BRDF as B-spline volumes and to utilize them in physically-based rendering. We show that B-spline volume BRDF (BVB) representation is suitable for measured BRDFs due to its compact size without quality loss in rendering. Moreover, various CAGD techniques can be applied to B-spline volume BRDFs for further controls such as refinement and blending.

  • Forging of trapezoidal spline, serration and square spline with solid cylindrical billets and hollow one has been investigated by means of upper bound method. Kinematically admissible velocity fields for forging of splines have been proposed in this study. The half pitch of splines has been divided into deformation regons. The neutral surface is introduced into forging of splines with flat punch and, for each step, it is assumed as a circle with its radius rn upper bound solutions obtained obtained by proposed kinematically admissible velocity fields are useful to predict the loads for forging of splines.

  • A unified numerical method for computing the quadrature weights, integration matrix, and differentiation matrix is newly developed in this study. For this purpose, a spline-like interpolation using piecewise continuous polynomials is converted into a global spline interpolation formula, with which the quadrature formulas can be derived from integration and differentiation of the transformed function in an exact manner. To prove the usefulness of the suggested approach, both the Lagrange and tension spline interpolations are represented in exactly the same form as global spline interpolation. The applicability of the proposed method on arbitrary nodes is illustrated using two different sets of nodes. A series of validations using three test functions is conducted to show the flexibility in selecting computational nodes with the present method.

  • This paper describes one method of reverse engineering that machines a free form shape without descriptive model. A portable five-axes 3D CMM was used to digitize point data from physical model. After approximation by rational B-spline curve from digitized point data of a geometric shape, a surface was constructed by the skinning method of the cross-sectional design technique. Since a surface patch was segmented by fifteen part, surface merging was also implemented to assure the surface boundary continuity. Finally, composite surface was transferred to commercial CAD/CAM system through IFES translation in order to machine the modeled geometric shape.
