  • Firms prefer in some specific conditions cooperative R&D to non-cooperative for developing technology. Previous studies on the conditions show firms want to choose cost-sharing type of cooperative R&D (the CS-RJV) rather than non-cooperative one when target technology is either 'relatively easy'or 'relatively difficult', and to join multiple-research type of cooperation (the MR-RJV) than to compete each other if technology is only 'relatively easy'. However, by introducing technological spillover as well as difficult of technology, only if there shown that this seemingly contrasted phenomenon almost disappears : the MR-RJV can i3e also preferred by firms even in case of 'relatively difficult'technology only if there exists some extent of a technological spillover.

Spillover Effects of Patents and strengthening of Intellectual Property Rights on Productivity and Innovation: Intra- and Inter-industry Spillovers of IT Industry (특허권 강화와 특허출원 변화의 기술혁신 및 생산성 파급효과: 산업내 및 IT산업의 산업간 파급효과를 중심으로)

  • Using patent and firm-level panel data for 1982-2001, this study investigates spillover effects of patents and the strengthening of intellectual property rights on Productivity and Innovation. As well as we consider the effect of intra-industry spillovers, we extend the effect to inter-industry spillovers which implies the effects of IT industries on non-IT industries. The empirical results are summarized as follows. First, allowing for firm-level variables, market competition and technological spillovers, the strengthening of intellectual property rights does not play a significant role on innovative activities. Second, while innovative activities of domestic firms affect significantly firms' innovative activities, those of foreign firms do not. Third, innovative activities of IT industries as inter-industry spillovers play a significant role on innovative activities and labor productivities of domestic firms.

  • Although large space structures(LSS) such as a space station, a solar power station satellite, etc., are theoretically distributed parameter and infinite-dimensional systems, they have to be modeled into a lumped parameter and large finite-dimensional system for control system design. Besides, there remains the fundamental problem that the modeled large finite-dimensional system must be controled with a much smaller dimensional controller due to the limitation of computing resources. This causes the spillover phenomenon which degrades control performances and reduces the stability margin. Furthermore, it may destabilize the entire feedback control system. In this paper, we propose a novel spillover suppression method in the active vibration control of large flexible structures by using eigenstructure assignment. Its validity and effectiveness are investigated and verified by the numerical experiments using a simply supported flexible beam, which is modeled to have four controlled modes and eight uncontrolled modes.

  • This study investigates the determinants of output of a manufacturing firm's innovative activity (the number of patent applications) and spillover effects using a count data model. This paper attempted a negative binomial distribution In order to take into account unobserved heterogeneity. The results of our study suggested that Firm size, R&D intensity, technical network activity, and online business performance have significantly positive effects in the Korean manufacturing industry. Moreover, there are significantly positive spillover effects in the same industry sector.

Information Spillover Effects from Macroeconomic Variables to Hotel·Leisure Stock Index (거시경제변수의 호텔·레저 주가지수에 대한 정보이전효과에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify information spillover effects using returns of macroeconomic variables and hotel leisure stock index daily data from January 4, 2000 to December 30, 2015. The findings and implications of the research can be summarized as follows. First, based on time-varying AR(1)-GARCH(1,1) models no evidence of statistically significant conditional mean and volatility spillover effects from returns of macroeconomic variables on the hotel leisure stock index was observed. In addition, no evidence of price volatility spillover from macroeconomic variables on the hotel leisure market was observed. Second, it was discovered that there exists a significantly negative relationship between the return of ER and hotel leisure stock prices, but a positive relationship between the KOSPI and hotel leisure stock prices. Finally, the study also found that was a significantly positive relationship between the volatility of DUB and hotel leisure market, and an adversely negative relationship between the volatility of ER and hotel leisure market. The results of this study are expected to contribute by providing useful information for investment strategies, as well as for risk management for investors and managers.

Price and Volatility Spillovers in MENA Stock Market (중동지역주식시장의 가격및변동성이전효과분석)

  • While new evidence on international spillover effects has been widely discussed around the globe, the MENA (Middle East and North African) region has received little attention concerning international transmission of stock market movements. In this paper, we discuss international spillover effects between the major developed markets (US, Japan and Germany) and the emerging markets in the MENA region (Turkey and Egypt). While GARCH-type models have mainly been used to investigate international stock market spillovers in much of previous studies, we develop new testing strategies based on discrete wavelet decomposition. The basic finding is that price as well as volatility spillover effects exist from the developed stock markets to the MENA counterparts, although evidence for price spillover to the Egyptian market is rather weak. As for the interdependence of the major MENA stock markets, no spillover effects are found between these markets, while the two MENA markets are somewhat related with each other.

The Effect of Work-Family Spillover on Organizational Attachment of Women Managers (여성 관리자의 일-가족전이가 조직애착에 미치는 영향 : 조직문화의 상호작용효과를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the effects of work-family spillover on the organizational attachment of female managers. The 4th and 5th data sets of Korean Women Manager Panel Survey established by the Korean Women's Development Institute were merged and the 5th data set for female managers was analyzed. The findings reveal that work-family support relationship is an important factor for strengthening the organizational attachment on the part of female managers. For working women, organizational support and family support is the most significant driving force for retaining their career. Second, negative spillover from family to work rather than that from work to family had a stronger impact on the organizational attachment of female managers. This finding suggests that women are not free from their status in the family, and that conflict relationships originating from the family ha a stronger impact on women's organizational attachment than that generated from work. Third, the third stage model incorporates the interaction terms of work-family spillover and organizational culture. The results showed that the interaction effect alone remains. In particular, family-work positive spillover exerts positive (+) effects on the organizational attachment only if a rational organizational culture is in place. Work-family negative spillover, however, shows negative (-) effects under rational organizational culture. Family-work negative spillover combined with rational organizational culture reinforces the organizational attachment, but has negative (-) effects under traditional organizational culture. The implications might be that women may experience negative family to work spillover, which may weaken their organizational attachment and that a rational organizational culture can reverse the spillover effect and increase the organizational attachment of female managers. No interaction effect of organizational culture appears for work to family negative spillover. A differential effect by the direction of spillover requires further study. In addition, more study will be needed to develop a more integrative model with the relevant variables not included in this study and sub-group analyses will be needed to ascertain the differences within female managers.

Crossover and Spillover of Emotions from Work to Family among Working Couples in their Daily Lives (직장에서 경험한 강한 감정의 전이(spillover)와 교차전이(crossover): 시카고 지역 맞벌이 부부를 중심으로)

  • The link between work life and family life is an essential subject matter in understanding the lives of dual-earner couples. Concepts of spillover and crossover explain the link between work and family. The present study examines both the positive and negative aspects in these processes. The data come from the Sloan Working Families Study conducted by the Alfred P. Sloan Center on Parents, Children, and Work and NORC at the University of Chicago. The Experience Sampling Method employed explores directly the daily life experiences of the participants. The data were analysed using t-test. Both spillover and crossover were found in the lives of dual-earner couples in this study. Men and women brought happy emotions at work to home, but the data provide limited support for spillover of negative emotions. Gender differences were more apparent in examining the process of crossover. Men appear responsive to the positive and negative emotional experiences their spouse brought home while women were found not to be responsive to their spouses' positive emotional experiences at work. Furthermore, the analysis revealed an interesting trend concerning the emotions of working couples in that they generally seem to recover to their average level of emotions once home. This suggests that home can be a respite from strong emotions, a comforting place. By looking closely into the emotions experienced by working parents in their daily lives, this study adds contextual understanding concerning the link between work and family life. The findings on the effects of positive experiences at work invite social work practitioners and researchers to further investigate the phenomena of spillover and crossover processed in greater detail, taking into account this contextual aspect of family life as well as the work life of dual-earner couples.

Morphological change of Pt/MoO3/SiO2 for the Synthesis of i-Butylene from n-Butene (N-Butene으로부터 i-Butylene 합성을 위한 Pt/MoO3/SiO2 촉매의 표면 구조 변화)

  • Skeletal isomerization reaction known as exothermic reaction shows possible maximum yield of i-butene from n-butene at $110^{\circ}C$ over $Pt/MoO_3/SiO_2$. Compared with conventional catalyst such as silica, zeolite, alumina etc., $Pt/MoO_3/SiO_2$ demonstrates higher yield while by-products except 2-butene do not form. Faster H spillover rate over $Pt/MoO_3/SiO_2$ is demonstrated via isothermal reduction experiment at $110^{\circ}C$ compared to the rate over $Pt/MoO_3/Al_2O_3$. Overall isomerization rates are proportional to higher spillover rates from Pt onto $MoO_3$ surface. The skeletal isomerization reaction is composed of two elementary steps. First, carbonium ion formation over Pt crystallites by H spillover. Second, carbenium ion formation over $MoO_3$ followed by formation of i-butene. Moreover, it is suggested that H spillover step from Pt surface onto $MoO_3$ is assumed to be the rate determining step and control the overall isomerization rate.

The Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility on Corporate Image: The Role of Spillover Effect and Negativity Effect based on CSR dimensions (기업의 사회적 책임이 기업 이미지에 미치는 영향 - 차원별 파급효과와 메시지 유형을 중심으로 -)

  • Previous researches have proven that corporate social responsibility(adhere CSR) is positively related to corporate performance. But Most of CSR related researches have several limitations. One of limitations is that those researches treated CSR as unidimensional construct. Almost researchers in the area of CSR concepts insisted that CSR is consist of multi dimensions. Carroll's four dimensions of CSR have been utilized by numerous academicians. Carroll asserted that CSR is composed of four dimensions: economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibility. But Carroll's dimensions were revised as three dimensions by Schwartz and Carroll, because ethical and philanthropic responsibility are not mutually exclusive. If CSR construct is composed of multiple dimensions, a message related to one of dimensions changes beliefs or evaluations about other dimensions that are not mentioned in the message. This phenomenon is called as "spillover effect". According to Ahluwalia, Unnava, and Burnkrant, negative information spills over to attributes that are associated with the target attributes but not mentioned in the message. Like this, this preponderant effect of negative information over positive information has been termed the "negativity effect". In this paper, authors try to prove the spillover effect and negativity effect among Schwartz and Carroll's three dimensions(economic, legal, and ethical responsibility) of CSR. The results of this study show that messages related to legal and ethical responsibility cause spillover effect and influence consumers' evaluation to other dimensions. Moreover, when negativity effect is added on spillover effect, spillover effect is more increased. It means that negative messages related to legal and ethical responsibility is more harmful to corporate image than negative message related to economic responsibility. The results of this study will help companies to manage corporate image using CSR messages as marketing communication tools. Companies should manage messages related to legal and ethical responsibility for more efficiently managing corporate image. Specially, because negative messages related to legal and ethical responsibility are more harmful to corporate image, companies must take care not to spread out negative message related to legal and ethical responsibility. Finally, we discuss the implications of the findings and limitations.
