Tip Clearance Effect of Low Mass Flow Rate High Specific Speed Centrifugal Impeller (저유량 고비속도 원심압축기 임펠러에서의 팁간극에 따른 효과)

  • In this paper, the design of Centrifugal Compressor which is used in sizes 50 horse power has 8 pressure ratio and numerical analysis of the flow within compressor varying tip clearance length are performed. To get high pressure ratio with low power the exit height of impellers is low but compressor has very high speed of revolution. So compressor has high specific speed although mass flow rate is very small. The shape of impellers at the first stage is carried out. Flow and performance characteristics of impellers has been analyzed by using a commercial CFD program, $Fine^{TM}$/turbo. The result shows that loss coefficient is affected by tip clearance length and compressor has proper tip clearance length. It is possible to decrease loss by selecting apt tip clearance length.

A Study on the Wear Characteristics of Compound Layers Formed during Gaseous Nitrocarburizing in Medium Carbon Boron Steels (중탄소 Boron강의 가스침질탄화처리에 의해 형성된 화합물층의 마모특성에 관한 연구)

  • The study on the wear characteristics of compound layers formed during gaseous nitrocarburising in the medium carbon boron steels and the plain carbon steel has been carried out by using a pin-on-disc type wear test machine under the oil lubricating condition at room temperature and by varying applied loads, sliding speeds and wear distances. Values of friction coefficient measured at the sliding speed of 0.4m/sec under the oil lubricating condition have been shown to decrease considerably with increasing applied load and become gradually a constant value as load is increased to a higher value, showing that the transition load for friction coefficient appears at an applied load of 247.2N. The length and volume wear rates of compound layer have been revealed to relatively constantly increase, also showing that the wear life per unit thickness of compound layer turns out to be superior as porous layer has a denser and thinner appearance. As the sliding speed increases during wear test performed by varying sliding speed at a load of 63.2N under the oil lubricating condition for medium carbon boron steel nitrocarburised in gas atmosphere, the wear rate has been found to increase, the friction coefficient to decrease and the wear life per unit thickness of compound layer to decrease considerably.

On the Motion of the Structure Varying Multibody Systems with Two-Dimensional Dry Friction

  • In the present paper the dynamics of the structure varying multibody systems caused by stick-slip motion with two-dimensional dry friction are analyzed. The methods to determine friction force both in stick and slip states are described. The direct method of considering the wagon bogie system as a structure varying system was used to consider two dimensional friction at the wheelset-side frame connection. The concept of friction direction angle used to determine the friction force components of two-dimensional dry friction both in the stick and slip motion states was used. A speed depended friction coefficient was used and described approximately by hyperbolic secant function. All switch conditions were derived and friction forces both for stick and slip states. Some simulation results are provided.

  • Experimental investigation on the performance of a heat pump system using refrigerant mixtures is done. The condenser and the evaporator are double pipe heat exchangers of counter flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. The refrigerant mixture used in the experiment is R22/R142b. Experiments are performed by changing the compressor speed, composition on ratio of mixture, and the average temperatures of condenser and evaporator. The compressor work, heating capacity and the coefficient of performance are calculated. Results show that the heating capacity can be changed by varying the mass flow rate of refrigerant mixtures to meet the heating load. It is shown that the capacity control by changing the composition ratio is more effective than by changing the compressor speed. Under the condition where the external conditions are fixed and the heating loads are equal, the coefficient of performance has its maximum value near 50 : 50 mass fraction of the refrigerant mixture in this study.

  • Temperature fields and temperature deformations induced by time-varying solar radiation, shadow, and heat exchange are of great importance for the ride safety and quality of the maglev system. Accurate evaluations of their effects on the dynamic performances are necessary to avoid unexpected loss of service performance. This paper presents a numerical approach to determine temperature effects on the maglev train/guideway interaction system. Heat flux density and heat transfer coefficient of different components of a 25 m simply supported concrete guideway on Shanghai High-speed Maglev Commercial Operation Line is calculated, and an appropriate section mesh is used to consider the time-varying shadow on guideway surfaces. Based on the heat-stress coupled technology, temperature distributions and deformation fields of the guideway are then computed via Finite Element method. Combining guideway irregularities and thermal deformations as the external excitations, a numerical maglev train/guideway interaction model is proposed to analyze the temperature effect. The responses comparison including and excluding temperature effect indicates that the temperature deformation plays an important role in amplifying the response of a running maglev, and the parameter analysis results suggest that climatic and environmental factors significantly affect the temperature effects on the coupled maglev system.

  • In this paper, we propose a high-speed multiplier-free realization using ROM’s to store the results of coefficient scalings in Combination With higher signal rate and pipelined operations. We show that hardware multipliers are not needed. By varying some parameters, the proposed structure provides various combinations of hardware and clock speed (or through-put). An example is given comparing the proposed realization with the distributed arithmetic (DA) realization. Results show that With Proper Choices of the Parameters the proposed structure achieves a faster processing speed with less hardware, as compared to the DA realization.

  • In this paper, we formulated algorithm for free vibration analysis of cylindrical shells with stiffeners by applying the transfer influence coefficient method. This was developed as a vibration analysis method suitable for using personal computer(PC). The simple computational results form PC demonstrated the validity of the present algorithm, that is, the computational high accuracy and speed, and the flexibility of programming. We compared with results of the transfer matrix method and the reference. We also confirmed that the present algorithm could provide the solutions of high accuracy for system with a lots of intermediate rigid supports and stiffeners. And all boundary conditions and the intermediate stiff supports between shell and foundation could be treated only by adequately varying the values of the spring constants.

Modeling and experimental comparative analysis on the performance of small-scale wind turbines

  • This paper deals with the design, wind tunnel testing, and performance analysis of small wind turbines targeting low-power applications. Three different small-size blade designs in terms of size, shape, and twisting angle are considered and tested. We conduct wind tunnel tests while measuring the angular speed of the rotating blades, the generated voltage, and the current under varying resistive loading and air flow conditions. An electromechanical model is also used to predict the measured voltage and power and verify their consistency and repeatability. The measurements are found in qualitative agreement with those reported in previously-published experimental works. We present a novel methodology to estimate the mechanical torque applied to the wind turbine without the deployment of a torque measuring device. This method can be used to determine the power coefficient at a given air speed, which constitutes an important performance indicator of wind turbines. The wind tunnel tests revealed the capability of the developed wind turbines to deliver more than 1225 mW when subject to an air flow with a speed of 7 m/s. The power coefficient is found ranging between 26% and 32%. This demonstrates the aerodynamic capability of the designed blades to extract power from the wind.

Comparison of Cushion Performance on Parameter Changes in High Speed Pneumatic Cylinder Driving System (공기압 실린더 고속 구동시스템에서 파라미터 변화에 따른 쿠션성능 비교)

  • Due to the tendency to use high speed pneumatic cylinders to improve productivity, cushioning devices are adopted to decelerate the piston motion of pneumatic cylinders to reduce noise, vibration, and impact. This paper presents a comparison of the cushion characteristics of a high speed pneumatic cylinder with a relief valve type cushioning device. The system parameters selected are the damping coefficient, Coulomb friction, heat transfer coefficient, and cracking pressure of the relief valve in the air cushioning device. The integral of the time multiplied square error (ITSE) is used to quantitative measure the cushioning performance to assess the effect of varying these. The cushioning performance achieved good results when the ITSE is a minimum value. In a comparison of the piston displacement and velocity with the variations in system parameters, the heat transfer coefficients are not as significantly affected as the other. Also, the cracking pressure of the relief valve is mainly affected by the pressure and temperature in the cushion chamber.

An Adaptive Line Enhancer Using Lattice Notch Filters (격자형 노치 필터를 이용한 정현파 검출기)

  • In this paper, an adaptive IIR (infinite impulse response) notch filter of lattice type is constructed and its adaptation algorithm is proposed for the detection and retrieval of a sine wave signal embedded in noise. A modified method which adapts only one coefficient of the filter is also suggested. All these methods adapt the coefficients while keepting the poles of the filter inside the unit circle on z-plane, and thus they satisfy the condition on the stability of the IIR filter after it has converged. To investigate the convergence characteristics of these methods such as convergence speed and output S/N ratio, intensive computer simulation has been performed by varying the frequency of the sine wave and the input S/N ratio. And the results of the simulation have been compared to those of Rao and Kung's which shows relatively fast convergence speed. The methods proposed here, especially the second one. shows faster convergence speed and higher output S/N ratio than the Rao and Kung's.
