A novel hardware design for SIFT generation with reduced memory requirement

  • Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) generates image features widely used to match objects in different images. Previous work on hardware-based SIFT implementation requires excessive internal memory and hardware logic [1]. In this paper, a new hardware organization is proposed to implement SIFT with less memory and hardware cost than the previous work. To this end, a parallel Gaussian filter bank is adopted to eliminate the buffers that store intermediate results because parallel operations allow all intermediate results available at the same time. Furthermore, the processing order is changed from the raster-scan order to the block-by-block order so that the line buffer size storing the source image is also reduced. These techniques trade the reduction of memory size with a slight increase of the execution time and external memory bandwidth. As a result, the memory size is reduced by 94.4%. The proposed hardware for SIFT implementation includes the Descriptor generation block, which is omitted in the previous work [1]. The addition of the hardwired descriptor generation improves the computation speed by about 30 times when compared with the previous work.

APPARENT INWARD MOTION OF THE PARSEC-SCALE JET IN THE BL LAC OBJECT OJ287 DURING THE 2011-2012 γ-ray FLARES

  • We present a kinematic study of the parsec-scale radio jet in OJ 287, one of the most studied BL Lac objects, during ${\gamma}$-ray flares, to explore the relation between parsec-scale radio jet activity and ${\gamma}$-ray emission. The 22-GHz light curve of OJ 287 show three obvious flare events around 2011 May, 2011 October, and 2012 March. The second radio flare occurred during the ${\gamma}$-ray flaring period, and the third radio flare seemed to precede the ${\gamma}$-ray flare by one month. One jet component moved outward with respect to the core component with an apparent superluminal speed (~ 11c) from 2010 November to 2011 November. Then it changed direction, moving apparently inward in 2011 November, when the ${\gamma}$-ray flare occurred. The observed apparent inward motion of the jet at 22 GHz could be caused by a new jet component, unresolved at 22 GHz, in the innermost region.

  • The temperature of the flight objects in high speed increases due to the aerodynamic heating. MINIVER and CFD approach are used to predict the aerodynamic heating conditions of KSLV-I. MINIVER is based on the empirical method. And the CFD approach predicts the aerodynamic heating conditions after the analysis of the surface temperature and the surface heat flux directly. In this study, the aerodynamic heating conditions using CFD approach are considered. The PLF temperature for these aerodynamic heating conditions is compared with the flight test data of KSLV-I.

  • This is a research of an adaptive longitudinal control system for situated cognition in wide range, traffic accidents reduction and safety driving environment by integrated system which graft a road infrastructure's information based on IT onto the intelligent vehicle combined automobile and IT technology. The road infrastructure installed by laser scanner in intersection, speed limited area and sharp curve area where is many risk of traffic accident. The road infra conducts objects recognition, segmentation, and tracking for determining dangerous situation and communicates real-time information by Ethernet with vehicle. Also, the data which transmitted from infrastructure supports safety driving by integrated with laser scanner's data on vehicle bumper.

A Caching Mechanism for Remote Queries in Distributed Directory Systems (분산 디렉토리 시스템에서의 원격 질의에 대한 캐싱 기법)

  • In this paper, for improving the speed of query processing on distributed directory system, we proposed a caching mechanism which is store the queries and their on the remote site objects in the cache of local site. For this, first, cached information which is stored in distributed directory systems is classified as application data and system data. And cache system architecture is designed according to classified information. Second least-TTL replacement mechanism which uses the weighted value of geographical information and access frequency for replacements are developed for each cache. Finally, performance evaluations are performed by comparing the proposed caching mechanism and other mechanisms (LRU, LFU replacement). Our least-TTL mechanism shows a performance improvement of 25% over the LRU and that of 30% over LFU.

  • The physical attributes of a computer, such as processor speed, size and access time of memory, and I/O bandwidth, are fixed when the computer is delivered to the user. Under these conditions, the performance of a multi-process system where multiple processes share various resources can be enhanced by monitoring and controlling the relationship between the user processes and the system resources. This paper applies object oriented concept to the performance management and suggests a standard for the management. Resource managers and user processes are defined as managed object and a performance manager is defined as a managing object. A protocol between the user processes and performance manager is designed and attributes and methods of the objects are also defined. Through the standardization, the user processes and the performance manager can be developed independently and the system's performance can also be collectively managed.

  • Accurate estimation of concrete strength development at early ages is a critical factor to secure structural stability as well as to speed up the construction process. The temperature generated from the heat of hydration is considered as a key parameter in predicting the early age strength. Conventionally, concrete temperature has been measured by temperature sensors installed inside concrete. However, considering the measurement on building structures with multiple floors, this method requires reinstallation and repositioning of hardware such as sensors, data loggers and routers for data transfer. This makes the temperature monitoring work cumbersome and inefficient. Concrete temperature monitoring by using thermal remote sensing can be an effective alternative to supplement those shortcomings. In this study, image processing was carried out through K-means clustering technique, which is a unsupervised learning method, and the classification results were analyzed accordingly. In the future, research will be conducted on how to automatically recognize concrete among various objects by using deep learning techniques.

An Algorithm to Speed Up the Rapid Prototyping (쾌속조형의 속도를 향상시키기 위한 알고리즘)

  • While developing physical prototype from CAD model, rapid prototyping mainly focuses on two key points reducing time and material consumption. So, we have to change from a traditional solid model to building a hollowed prototype. In this paper, a new method is presented to hollow out solid objects with uniform wall thickness to increase RP efficiency. To achieve uniform wall thickness, it is necessary to generate internal contour by slicing the offset model of an STL model. Due to many difficulties in this method, this paper proposes a new algorithm that computes internal contours computing offset model which is generated from external contour using wall thickness. Proposed method can easily compute the internal contour by slicing the offset surface defined by the sum of circle swept volumes of external contours without actual offset and the circle wept volumes. Internal contour existences are confirmed by using the external point. Presented algorithm uses the 2D geometric algorithm allowing RP implementation more efficient. Various examples have been tested with implementation of the algorithm, and some examples are presented for illustration.

Real-Time PTZ Camera with Detection and Classification Functionalities (검출과 분류기능이 탑재된 실시간 지능형 PTZ카메라)

  • In this paper we proposed an intelligent PTZ camera system which detects, classifies and tracks moving objects. If a moving object is detected, features are extracted for classification and then realtime tracking follows. We used GMM for detection followed by shadow removal. Legendre moment is used for classification. Without auto focusing, we can control the PTZ camera movement by using center points of the image and object's direction, distance and velocity. To implement the realtime system, we used TI DM6446 Davinci processor. Throughout the experiment, we obtained system's high performance in classification and tracking both at vehicle's normal and high speed motion.

Object Contour Extraction Algorithm Combined Snake with Level Set (스네이크와 레벨 셋 방법을 결합한 개체 윤곽 추출 알고리즘)

  • Typical methods of active contour model for object contour extraction are snake and level. Snake is usually faster than level set, but has limitation to compute topology of objects. Level set on the other hand is slower but good at it. In this paper, a new object contour extraction algorithm to use advantage of each is proposed. The algorithm is composed of two main steps. In the first step, snake is used to extract the rough contour and then in the second step, level set is applied to extract the complex contour exactly. 5 binary images and 2 natural images with different contours are simulated by a proposed algorithm. It is shown that speed is reduced and contour is better extracted.
