  • A new algorithm for determining noise level is proposed for more reliability in interpreting spectral data for complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectra of petroleum. In the new algorithm, a moving window with a fixed number of data points was adopted, instead of a fixed m/z width. In the analysis of petroleum, it was found that a moving window of 50,000 or more data points was optimal. This optimized automated peak picking performed well even with frequency-dependant noise in the mass spectrum. Additionally, this fast, automated peak picking algorithm was suitable for the analysis of a large set of samples.

  • Side-polished single-mode fiber covered with a thick planar-glass-waveguide is studied as a polarization-insensitive fiber-optic refractometer The properties of the device are very sensitive to the index variation of an upper cladding on top of the overlay waveguide. We investigate the spectral response, the polarization properties, and the relationship between the shift in coupling wavelength and the index variation of an upper cladding layer Index resolutions of the order of 10-4 have been achieved.

  • The effects of surfactants, CTAB, SDS, and TX-100, on the fluorescence emission intensity of Be-morin complex was studied in terms of pH, temperature, added electrolyte, and concentration of surfactants. The ionic surfactants decreased the fluorescence intensity of the complex. However, the addition of TX-100 caused a substantial increase in the fluorescence intensity without spectral shift, by which means the detection limit of Be was obtained to be 0.3 ppb. Optimum pH for Be determination was near 9.6 and the fluorescence intensity showed a continuous decline with the increase of temperature. Nitrate ion lowered the fluorescence intensity considerably. Mechanism of the interference remains to be elucidated.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) correlation method, which generates the synchronous and the asynchronous 2D spectrum by complex cross correlation of the Fourier transformed spectra, is an analysis method for the changes of the sample spectrum induced by vari ous perturbations. In the present work, the 2D electronic correlation spectra have been simulated for the cases where the sample spectrum composed of two gaussian bands changes linearly. When only the band amplitudes of the sample spectrum change, the synchronous spectrum shows strong peaks at the band centers of the sample spectrum, but the asynchronous spectrum does not make peaks. When the sample spectrum shifts without changing intensity and width, the synchronous spectrum shows peaks around the initial and final positions of the band maximum and the asynchronous spectrum shows long peaks spanning the shifting range. The band width change produces the complex 2D correlation spectra. When the sample spectrum shifts with band broadening, the width change by 50% of full width at half maximum (FWHM) does not give so large an effect on the correlation spectrum as the spectral shift by one half of FWHM of the sample spectrum.

  • Binding geometries of $[Ru(II)(110-phenanthroline)_2L]^2+$, complexes (where L = dipyrido [3,2-a:2',3'-c]phena-zine (DPPZ) or benzodipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine (BDPPZ)) to poly(dG)${\cdot}$poly(dC)${\cdot}$poly(dC) + triplex DNA (CGC + triplex) has been investigated by linear dichroism and normal absorption spectroscopy. Analysis of the linear dichroism for the CGC+ triplex and $[Ru(II)(phen)_2BDPPZ]^2+$ complex indicates that the extended ligand of the metal complex lie perpendicular to the polynucleotide helix axis. Together with strong hypochromism and red shift in the interligand absorption region, we concluded that the extended BDPPZ or DPPZ ligand in-tercalated between the bases of polynucleotide. The spectral properties of the metal complexes bound to CGC+ triplex are similar to those bound to $poly(dA)[poly(dT)]^2$ triplex (Choi et al., Biochemistry 1997, 36, 214), sug-gesting that the metal complex is located in the minor groove of the CGC+ triplex.

  • Soft storey failure mechanism is a common collapse mode for masonry-infilled (MI) reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to severe earthquakes. Simple analytical equations correlating global with local ductility demands are derived from pushover (PO) analyses for seismic assessments of regular MI RC frames, considering the critical interstorey drift ratio, number of storeys and lateral loading configurations. The reliability of the equations is investigated using incremental dynamic analyses for MI RC frames of up to 7 storeys. Using the analytical ductility relationship and a coefficient-based method (CBM), the response spectral accelerations and period shift factors of low-rise MI RC frames are computed. The results are verified through published shake table test results. In general applications, the analytical ductility relationships thus derived can be used to bypass the onerous PO analysis while accurately predicting the local ductility demands for seismic assessment of regular MI RC frames.

  • In this paper, we attempt to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of tight wavelet frame sets in locally compact abelian groups. The condition is generated by modulating a collection of characteristic functions that correspond to a generalized shift-invariant system via the Fourier transform. We present two approaches (for stationary and non-stationary wavelets) to construct the scaling function for L2(G) and, using the scaling function, we construct an orthonormal wavelet basis for L2(G). We propose an open problem related to the extension principle for Riesz wavelets in locally compact abelian groups.

  • A novel optical hybrid device that doubles the multilevel demodulation resolution by adding the optical interferometer with a waveguide crossover is proposed, theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. We report two types of all-passive phase control schemes that will be referred to as a phase compensation scheme and a phase optimization scheme. We also apply the proposed phase control schemes to a 45° optical hybrid consisting of two parallel 90° optical hybrids together with the proposed phase control scheme for demodulating 8-level differential phase shift keying optical signals. Octagonal phase response with low wavelength sensitive excess loss of <0.8 dB over 31-nm-wide spectral range will be demonstrated in the InP-based material platform.

  • We visualized the distribution of heterochromatin in a single nucleus using plasmonic nanoparticle-conjugated H3K9me3 and H3K27me3 antibodies. Due to distance-dependent plasmonic coupling effects between nanoprobes, their scattering spectra shift to longer wavelengths as the distance between heterochromatin histone markers reduced during oncogene-induced senescence (OIS). These observations were supported by simulating scattering profiles based on considerations of particle numbers, interparticle distances, and the spatial arrangements of plasmonic nanoprobes. Using this plasmon-based colourimetric imaging, we estimated changes in distances between H3K9me3 and H3K27me3 during the formation of senescence-associated heterochromatin foci in OIS cells. We anticipate that the devised analytical technique combined with high-spatial imaging and spectral simulation will eventually lead to a new means of diagnosing and monitoring disease progression and cellular senescence.

  • In this paper, we propose new modulation schemes using the conventional CACB modulation with constant amplitude property. Also the proposed modulation schemes supports high transmission data rate by increasing the spectral efficiency. In order to obtain the high spectral efficiency, the $Q^2$PSK and CA-$Q^2$PSK are used. We explain the simplest combining modulation scheme of CACB and $Q^2$PSK (i.e., CACB-$Q^2$PSK). However, this modulation scheme cannot support the constant amplitude property. Hence the first CACB-CA-$Q^2$PSK (or CACB-CA-$Q^2$PSK I) modulation scheme is proposed for the constant amplitude property. In the modulation scheme, the redundant constant amplitude encoding (spectral efficiency decrease) is required. Therefore, the second CACB-CA-$Q^2$PSK (or CACB-CA-$Q^2$PSK II) modulation scheme is proposed retaining the constant amplitude and the spectral efficiency. Computer simulations show that the proposed CACB-CA-$Q^2$PSK II is the efficient modulation scheme.
