  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of sludge characteristics according to the changes of influent sewage flowrate in the advanced wastewater treatment processes including MBR, SBR, and $A_2O$. The ratio of the actual sewage flowrate to the design flowrate is decreased from 100% to 70, 40%, and 10%, and the specific denitrification rate and ammonia oxidation (nitrification) rate was measured. The specific nitrification rate of the sludge collected from the aeration tank of each process was measured at a similar value ($0.10gNH_4/gMLVSS/day$) in all three process under the condition of 100% of sewage flowrate. It has tended to decrease significantly as the sewage flowrate decreased from 70% to 40%. The specific denitrification rate was also decreased by ~50% as the sewage flowrate decreased. However, considering the total nitrogen concentration in the influent and the microbial concentration in the reactor, the changes in kinetic parameter did not affect overall nitrogen removal. Therefore, it can be concluded that stable nitrogen removal will be possible under low influent flowrate condition if the MLVSS concentration is kept high.

  • In this study, diesel/natural gas dual-fuel engine was studied numerically using DoE method. The engine is CI engine for power generation and modelled by 1-D simulation GT-power. The combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed as a function of IVO, IVC and the ratio of natural gas to total fuel enegy. As the proportion of natural gas increases, the BSFC(Brake specific fuel consumption) is increased and BSNOx(Brake specific NOx) is decreased. If specific valve timing to improve the BSFC is applied to the engine, the BSFC is decreased by 1% and simultaneously BSNOx is decreased by 36%.

  • The SI unit of specific absorption rate (SAR) in W/kg in the electromagnetic (EM) field as non-ionizing radiation is exactly same as the SI unit of absorbed dose rate in Gy/s in the ionizing radiation field. The SI unit of both physical quantities can be expressed in $[m^{\cdot}s^{-3}]$. Where, the unit of absorbed dose, Gy stands for Gray. In EM biological interactions, the SAR equations are derived and the characteristics of EM field energy absorption in terms of the SAR are discussed and described on the mathematical basis.

  • The electrochemical performances of an asymmetric hybrid capacitor were investigated using $LiFePO_4$ as the positive electrode and active carbon fibers(ACF) as the negative electrode. The electrochemical behaviors of a nonaqueous hybrid capacitor were characterized by constant current charge/discharge test. The specific capacitance using $LiFePO_4$/ACF electrode turned out to be $0.87F/cm^2$ and the unit cell showed excellent cycling performance. This hybrid capacitor was able to deliver a specific energy as high as 178 Wh/kg at a specific power of 1,068 W/kg.

  • In this research, we report the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous graphene aerogels (hpGAs) for application to electrochemical energy storage. For electrochemical systems, the specific capacitance is a key parameter to evaluate the characteristics of electrode materials. By taking full advantage of large surface area, 3D hpGAs would achieve the larger specific capacitance over rGO film and GAs. Microscopic structures and topologies of hpGAs were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to determine the chemical compositions of rGO film, GAs, and hpGAs. Raman spectra were recorded from 100 to 2500 cm-1 at room temperature using a Raman spectroscopy equipped with a ${\times}100$ objective was used. The specific area and pore distribution of GAs and hpGAs were obtained using a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller apparatus.

  • Selection of a right weather data set has been considered as one of important factors for a successful building energy audit process. A set of 30 year raw weather data base for six major cities has been developed to provide the weather data file for building energy audit and retrofit analysis in Korea. The program named as KWDP(KIER Weather Data Processor) uses the DB to produce a right data set for a specific building energy performance simulation program like DOE2.1E. A program called WMAKE has been developed to generate the right set of input parameters for DOE2.1E weather utility program. The set of the programs could provide the right weather data for specific building energy audit and retrofit analysis.

  • Slush hydrogen containing liquid and solid hydrogen is expected to achieve zero boil-off by suppressing boil-off gas because heat of fusion for solid absorbe the heat ingress from atmosphere. In this paper, quantitative analysis on storage cost considering specific energy consumption between 1,000 m3 class liquid hydrogen storage system with re-liquefaction and slush hydrogen storage system during equivalent zero boil off period. Even though approximately 50% of total storage capacity should be converted into solid phase during the initial cargo bunkering, total energy consumption to convert into slush hydrogen is relatively 25% less than re-liquefaction energy for boil off hydrogen during zero boil off period. That's because energy consumption of slush phase change take up only 1.8% of liquefaction energy. moreover, annual revenue requirement including CAPEX, OPEX and electric cost for slush hydrogen storage could be more reduced approximately 32.5% than those of liquid hydrogen storage and specific energy storage cost ($/kg-H2) could also be lowered by about 41.7% compared with liquid hydrogen storage.

  • The performance of water-to-water heat pump system coupled with the ground source vertical heat exchanger is presented in this paper. The CAP program of Florida Heat Pump Co. is used to predict the heat pump performances while the EED program calculates the borehole fluid temperature. It is shown that COPH increases with decreasing the temperature of output water for the operation of heating mode and COPR increases with increasing temperature of output water for the operation of cooling mode. The value of specific heat extraction rate must be moderate to insure the reasonable installation cost of borehole system. With $1^{\circ}C$decrease of $T_{wo}$ the average COPH increase is estimated as about $0.06/^{\circ}C$(for $T_{wo}\;=\;45{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ range) while with $1^{\circ}C$ increase of $T_{wo}$ the estimation of COPR increase is about $0.13/^{\circ}C$(for $T_{wo}\;= \;5{\sim}11^{\circ}C$ range) at the specific heat extraction rate of 30W/m.

  • The explicit consideration of different pressurization rates in estimating the probabilities of containment failure modes has a profound effect on the confidence of containment performance evaluation that is so critical for risk assessment of nuclear power plants. Except for the sophisticated NUREG-1150 study, many of the recent containment performance analyses (through Level 2 PSAs or IPE back-end analyses) did not take into account an explicit distinction between slow and fast pressurization in their analyses. A careful investigation of both approaches shows that many of the approaches adopted in the recent containment performance analyses exactly correspond to the NUREG-1150 approach for the prediction of containment failure mode probabilities in the presence of fast pressurization. As a result, it was expected that the existing containment performance analysis results would be subjected to greater or less conservatism in light of the ultimate failure mode of the containment. The main purpose of this paper is to assess potential conservatism of a plant-specific containment performance analysis result in light of containment failure mode probabilities.
