  • Vaccinium oldhami Miq. is a Korean native tree, which is deciduous and shrub tree with broad leaf. It grows 1~4m in height generally. Ecologically, this tree grows well in shady place even in barren soil. Also, the tree has resistance to cold and dry, which tend to form a little community. This research investigates quantitative morphological characteristics of leaf and fruit among the V. oldhami in South Korea and then considers its relationship on the basis of raw data among the 10 populations. This study will give us invaluable information about growing conditions, reasonable management and breeding by selection of V. oldhami in South Korea. The main results obtained from this study are summarized as follows; Leaf size of Mudeung population was larger than other populations. Naebyeon population was smaller in size of the leaf than other populations. Anmyeondo population was larger in fruit characteristics compared with other populations and Deogyu population was the smallest among populations. According to cluster analysis based on the leaf and fruit morphological characteristics, the natural V. oldhami populations were classified into four groups such as the first group of Kumo population, the second group of Mudeung population, the third group of Anmyundo, Daedun, Doolyun population and the fourth group of the other five populations.

  • Special nutritional foods are one category of processed foods. In this category, 5 different food standards are defined in the current rule of the Korean Food Code ; that is, infant formulae, complementary foods for infants and young children, foods nutrient supplementation, processed dietary fiber-based foods, and foods for special dietary uses. The major differences between the special dietary uses. The major difference between the special nutritional foods and the other processed foods is that the special nutritional foods are characterized by their dietary uses for specific population groups rather than food ingredients or manufacturing and processing techniques which characterize and distinguish most of other processed foods. Although several countries establish similar standards for this type of foods, they use different legal names such as foods for special dietary uses(U.S.A., CODEX, Japan), foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses(EC), or special purpose foods(Australia). In addition, there are some other differences in the definitions for these food types and categorization of food types among countries. The major difference in the definitions is the description of 'special dietary uses' by specifying certain population groups whose nutrient requirements are different from those of ordinary men due to physiological or physical conditions and therefore may not be sufficiently met by consuming ordinary foods. The categorization of this type of foods is based on the type of dietary uses in the other countries, whereas we include foods simply supplemented with nutrients or foods having certain components such as dietary fibers even if these foods types do not have special dietary sues. Recently, a revision of standards for special nutritional food has been proposed. However, the description of 'special dietary uses' is not clearly indicated in the definition, and some food types which should not be categorized into the special nutritional foods still remain in this category. In order to correct these problems, the standard of food labeling in the Food Safety Law needs to be revised along with revision of food standards in the Food Code.

  • This study adopted the descriptive survey research method. The population of this study comprised of the hearing impaired students in selected government secondary schools in Rivers state. The population of hearing impaired students in Rivers State is 257. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 159. A self-developed instrument titled "Availability and Utilization of Library Information Resources Questionnaire (AULIRQ)" was utilized for data collection. 153 responses were collated, indicating a 96.2% response rate. The data collected was arranged and analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean and standard deviation. Finding reveals that information resources in the libraries understudied were inadequate and under-utilized. Also, it was established that among other barriers, under-funding is a major barrier to making information resources available for the physically challenged. It was recommended that schools offering special education for the hearing impaired should pace up in their developmental gap by providing such resources and ensure adequate funding by all stakeholders.

  • As exchanges between countries become more active, new threats such as drugs, illegal imports of food and medicines, and terrorism are present all over the world. From this, increased border security that protects people's safety is becoming a new issue. The activities of special purpose dogs that detect these threats in advance are becoming very important. One of the obstacles in securing superior individuals is musculoskeletal disorders which interfere with the work of special purpose dogs. In order to search for genes associated with these genetic disorders, we conducted genomic analysis using linkage disequilibrium information and investigated genetic characteristics to know heterozygosity and inbreeding status in the population. In this study, two breeds (Malinois, Shepherd) of army dogs and three breeds (Malinois, Shepherd, Retriever) from public databases were used for comparison. The 170K SNP marker panel was used for this study. In the principal component analysis, it was confirmed that clusters were formed for each breed. The number of effective populations differed for each cultivar, but this was due to the difference in numbers of individuals for each breed used for the analysis. The results of heterozygosity decay analysis showed that heterozygous alleles decreased with each generation. In the army dog group, if the population number is maintained properly, the frequency of allele genotype will not decrease significantly.

  • We consider two models for the growth of population with overlaping generations. First, the model we will describe is basically the model given by Leslie(1945). This is only a one-sex model of population age structure and growth. Next, we introduce a model in which couples must be formed before reproduction occurs. If the maximum number of couples is formed, and if the couples are only formed from fermales of age x-a and males of age x at time t, $\alpha$ > 0. Then, we will solve the renewal equations for the reproductive value.

  • Regional relocation of population in Korea is required strongly from natural and environmental sides for substantial growth of economy and the rigorous revival national economy against especially internationalization. This paper aimed for analysed the population distribution by regional and special characteristics of the inter-migration and showed the direction of population policy through the model building. Relocation methods of population by region has been examined through the process from the approach method by Haurin's production function to the approach by the utility function. The examination of the development model is done efficiently, how utility these approach models are depends on that scientific and composite plan for population problems against forced policy should be taken precedence.

  • Estimation of population proportion like the distribution rate of LED TV and the prevalence of a disease are often estimated based on survey sample data. Population proportion is generally considered as a special form of population mean. In complex sampling like stratified multistage sampling with unequal probability sampling, the denominator of mean may be random variable and it is estimated like ratio estimator. In this research, we examined the estimation of distribution rate based on stratified multistage sampling, and determined some numerical outcomes using stratified random sample data with about 25% of missing observations. In the data used for this research, the survey weight was determined by deterministic way. So, the weights are not random variable, and the population distribution rate and its variance estimator can be estimated like population mean estimation. When the weights are not random variable, if one estimates the variance of proportion estimator using ratio method, then the variances may be inflated. Therefore, in estimating variance for population proportion, we need to examine the structure of data and survey design before making any decision for estimation methods.

  • As the aging population increases and interest in well-being increases, the importance of developing special crops increases. Natural medicine based on the special crops has been mainly used as an adjunct therapy for many diseases and symptoms based on culture, traditional medicine, and experience. In particular, it is attracting attention as a new resource to develop new drugs such as Artemisinin, a treatment for malaria. In order to efficiently use crops, it is essential to establish omics data such as genomes, transcriptomes, and metabolites of special-purpose crops. However, many special-purpose crops have large, heterogeneous and polyploid genomes that require high cost and long time to reference genome sequencing. Therefore, we built an inexpensive, fast, but very usefill reference transcriptome as the first step. We constructed high-quality reference transcriptom sets of Codonopsis lanceolata and Ixeridium dentatum with PacBio data. Our team will continue to construct reference transcriptoms of more special-purpose crops, and the data will be released by the National Agricultural Biotechnology Information Center (NABIC) in order to be widely used in agricultural as well as medical R&D.
