  • The mechanism of reproductive cycle of longchin goby Chasmichthys dolichognathus was investigated for the annual variations of gonadosomatic index(GSI), histological changes of gonad, reproductive cycle, and initiating and terminating factors of the breeding season. The experimental fish were captured in the tide pool of Tongbaeksom, Pusan, Korea from February 1983 to September 1984. Experimental fish for the study of initiating and terminating factors of the breeding season were maintained in filtered recirculating aquariums and exposed to various temperature and photoperiod regimes. The ovary is a pair of sac-shaped organ, and the testicular structure is tubular and it is connected to the seminal vesicle which is located at the posterior end of the testis. GSI began to increase from February when the water temperature began to increase and reached peak in April. It began to decrease from August, the top water temperature season, and maintained relatively low values until January. The annual reproductive cycle includes successive six developmental stages : early growing from December to February, late growing from January to March, early mature from February to May, late mature and ripe from March to August, spawning from April to July, degeneration and resting stage from May to December. An experimental study based on the reproductive cycle of this species indicated that rising temperature under long photoperiod during spring stimulated gonadal maturation, whereas terminating factor of the breeding season with recrudescence of the gonads was demonstrated as high water temperature during summer regardless of photoperiod.

  • Development of egg, larvae and juveniles for the Pacific mackerel, Scomber japonicus are described following natural fertilization in the indoor tank of $25^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Following a routine hormone treatment technique for the brood stock, male and female mackerels were artificially matured by intramuscular injections of LHRHa at a dosage of $400{\mu}g/kg$ body weight (BW)+Domperidone at a dosage of $4{\mu}g/kg$ body weight (BW) to induce maturation in a separate aquarium and induced natural spawning. Fertilized eggs were ca. 1.0 mm in diameter; spherical in shape with a single oil globule; pelagic and non-adhesive. Hatching occurs 41 hours after fertilization at $23-24^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae was 3.03 mm in average total length (ATL), the mouth and anus were not open, oil globule located in posterior end of yolk sac, and preanal length was 42.8% of TL. The larvae measuring 2.89 mm ATL, almost absorbed yolk sac and oil globule material in 2 days after hatching, in which the mouth and anus were open. Melanophores, branch or star in shape were observed on the top of head, peritoneal region and along the ventral contour. In 13 days after hatching, the larvae was 6.88 mm ATL, its posterior end of notochord began to flex upward, finfold of caudal fin appeared, jaw teeth were already formed. In 19 days after hatching, the larvae was 7.71 mm ATL completed only caudal fin rays (9+8), and preanal length was 49.4% of TL. In 37 days after hatching, the larvae was 27.4 mm ATL already completed all the fins, and preanal length was 59.9% of TL.

  • The feeding habits of Lycodes tanakae Eelpout were studied with 722 specimens collected from March 2011 to December 2012 in the coastal waters of the middle East Sea. The main prey of L. tanakae were fish, molluscs and arthropods. Nevertheless annelida, echinodermata and others were found in small amounts in the stomach contents. The L. tanakae stomach was empty of contents in 50.9% of specimens. While smaller size specimens of L. tanakae (less than 40 cm) fed mainly on euphausiids and amphipods, the larger specimens (more than 40 cm) fed on the fish Allolepis hollandi and Icelus cataphractus, and the molluscs Berryteuthis magister and Watasenia scintillans. The main prey items of L. tanakae varied seasonally. The fish Lycodes nakamurai was the dominat prey from November to January during its spawning season. Euphausiids and amphipods of the arthropods were the dominant prey from February to April. The molluscs Berryteuthis magister and Watasenia scintillans were the dominant prey from May to September. The diversity index (H') of diets showed variations by length class and month; the highest values were 2.61 in the length class of 51-55 cm, and the monthly highest were 2.68 in September with 23 species and 2.65 in November with 18 species. The highest dominance index (D') of diets was 0.57 in the length class of 31-35 cm, and the monthly highest was 0.71 in February. Cluster analysis divided prey groups into four groups by length class and three groups by monthly prey items. The gonad index gradually increased during the process of maturation while, contrary, stomach content index decreased during this period.

  • Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a widely used organophosphate insecticide. Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes was selected to investigate the effects of chlorpyrifos on survival rate, hatching rate, reproductivity and histopathological changes. Adult fish were exposed to CPF at concentrations of 20, 40, 80 and $160{\mu}g/L$, and the test duration was 4 weeks. An experiment with eggs was also performed under CPF exposure continued for 7 days covering from the fecundation to end-hatching stages. Survival rate of the adult medaka decreased in CPF $80{\mu}g/L$ and $160{\mu}g/L$ treatment groups compared with control, solvent control, $20{\mu}g/L$ or $40{\mu}g/L$L treatment group. Spontaneous start of feeding significantly decreased compared with the control (p < 0.01) when exposed to CPF at above 40 $\mu g/L$. Total spawning decreased by the 20 or $40{\mu}g/L$ CPF treatment compared with the control or solvent control in the test with eggs obtained from untreated adult medaka, and abnormal eggs increased in those CPF-treated groups. There were certain adverse effects at above $40{\mu}g/L$ determined from liver and gonad histological examinations. The results indicate that CPF has insignificant toxic effects in Japanese medaka at less than $20{\mu}g/L$ in long term exposure.

  • Present experiments were conducted to determine the possibility of cultivation of tropical and subtropical saprophytic fungus, Volvariella volvacea (Bull. ex Fr.) Sing. under Korean climatic conditions and the-possibility of applying the method of indoor cultivation which was modified from the cultivation method of the common mushroom, Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Sing.. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In conventional outdoor cultivation, the adequate cultivation period of this fungus was from around the end of June to the end of August. 2. When rice straws submerged in water for 5 days were peak-heated for 6 days in a mush room house, the yield of the fungus was higher than that obtained from the rice straws peak-heated immediately after outdoor composting. 3. The highest yield, 20.49kg per 100kg rice straws, was obtained from the water-soaked and peak-heated rice straws which were cased with a 2 cm layer of loam at 7 days after spawning.

  • In this study, flow duration analysis was conducted at the Gumbo stage gauging station due to construction of the Youngchun dam. The flow duration characteristics were $10.49\;m^3/s$ of drought flow, $13.30\;m^3/s$. of low flow, $15.65\;m^3/s$ of normal flow, and $25.00\;m^3/s$ abundant flow before construction of Youngchun dam. But after construction of Youngchun dam, the flow duration characteristics were $2.07\;m^^3/s,\;2.89\;m^3/s,\;4.0\;m^3/s,\;9.36\;m^3/s$ and they had been deteriorated. Applying the Physical Habitat Simulation Model by Instream Flow Incremental Methodology, the Weighted Usable Area(WUA)-Discharge Curve was developed for Zacco Platypus according to the growth stages. Using the WUA-Discharge Curve, the WUA Duration Curve was developed with exceedance probability of daily flow and evaluated fish habitat conditions due to the construction of Youngchun dam. As an evaluation result, the WUA was reduced and fish habitat environment was deteriorated due to the construction of Youngchun dam during the spawning and growth period of Zacco Platypus. However the exceedence probability of the $90\;\%$, irrigation water supply from the Youngchun dam improved flow duration characteristics and Weighted Usable Area as well as fish habitat.

  • The local migration or movement behavior of fishes in streams are related to feeding, spawning, growing, dispersing, and refuging. The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is a dominant species that migrates locally and inhabits in river and stream in Korea. However, dams, weirs, culverts and other regulatory structures are physical barriers that limit fish movement and fragment habits and populations. If main stream and off-channel habitats are connected with culverts, they would restrict the small fish as pale chub movement due to the high flow velocities and low depths. But in Korea, there is no experimental study to evaluate the swimming performance of species in Korea. Therefore, it is difficult to proposed that design guidelines for pass fishes through culverts. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the swimming performance of pale chubs. A series of swimming performance test has been used in both of the fixed velocity and the incremental velocity methods in an experimental flume. As a result, the critical swimming speed for pale chub(body length 8.9 cm) was found to be about 0.7 m/s. Therefore, the flow velocity for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be exceed the its swimming ability, especially 0.7 m/s for pale chubs(body length 8.9 cm). And the minimum depth for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be lower than the fish body height add a dorsal fin height.

  • The age and growth of Gomphina (Macridiscus) veneriformis sampled from February 2006 to January 2007 on the Wonsan coast of East Sea were determined from 3,899 shell. Age of Gomphina (Macridiscus) veneriformis was estimated from the ring on the surface of shell. The relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH) was expressed by the following equation : SH = 0.7405 SL + 0.2227 ($R^2$ = 0.9671), and shell length (SL) and shell width (SW) was highly correlated by the equation : SW = 0.3657 SL + 0.4253 ($R^2$ = 0.922). The relationship between shell length (SL) and total weight (TW) was also expressed by the following equation : $TW=0.4274{\times}10^{-3}{\times}SL^{2.7876}$ ($R^2$ = 0.9591). The main spawning periods was estimated August through fatness index analysis. Based on the monthly variations in the marginal index (MI) of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of July. Growth curves for shell length (SL) and total weight (TW) fitted to the von Bertalanffy's equation were expressed as follows : $$SL_t=70.80(1-e^{-0.217(t+0.367)})$$ $$TW_t=(1-e^{-0.217(t+0.367)})^{2.7876}$$

  • The age and growth of Neptunea (Barbitonia) arthritica cumingii sampled from the West Sea of Korea were determined from 1,062 operculums from October 2007 to September 2008. Age of Neptunea (Barbitonia) arthritica cumingii was determined from the rings on the operculum. The relationship between shell height (SH; mm) and shell width (SW; mm) was expressed by the following equation : SW = 0.5757 SH + 0.222 ($R^2$ = 0.8723), and shell height (SH; mm) and total weight (TW; g) was highly correlated by the equation : TW = 0.0002 $SH^{2.8162}$ ($R^2$ = 0.9121). The main spawning periods was estimated June to July through fatness index analysis. The relationship between shell height and ring radius of operculum in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variations in the marginal index (MI) of the operculum, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of July to August. Growth curves for shell height (SH) and total weight (TW) fitted to the von Bertalanffy's equation were expressed as follows : $$SH_t=173.964(1-e^{-0.164(t+1.173)})$$ $$TW_t=407.952(1-e^{-0.164(t+1.173)})^{2.8162}$$

  • The reproductive cycle, gonad index, condition index, and the sex ratio in female and male Coecella chinensis, which were collected from the coastal waters of Namhae, the South Coast of Korea, were investigated by histological analysis and morphometric data. Monthly variations of the gonad index and condition index of this species showed similar patterns to that of the reproductive cycle. The reproductive cycle in female and male C. chinensis can be classified into six successive stages: early active stage (April), late active stage (May), ripe stage (June), partially spawned/spent stage (June to August), degeneration stage (August) and inactive stage (September to March). According to monthly changes in relative frequency distributions of ovarian egg diameters of this species, in particular, a number of ripe eggs ranging about 70 ${\mu}m$ appear in June, however, in July and August, although the mode of egg diameters ranging about 50 ${\mu}m$ appear about 80%, these ripe eggs ranging from 60 ${\mu}m$ to 70 ${\mu}m$ are gradually decreased during the period from June to August. Therefore, the spawning period of this species is continued from June to August with a peak between July and August when the seawater temperature exceeds about $24.5^{\circ}C$. The sex ratio of female and male individuals was not significantly different from 1:1 (${\chi}^2$=1.20, p>0.05). No hermaphrodites were found.
