  • Recently, a new distributed grid scheme, called DS-GRID(distributed S-GRID), has been proposed to manage the location information of moving objects in a spatial network[1]. However, because DS-GRID uses uniform grid cells, it cannot handle skewed data which frequently occur in the real application. To solve this problem, we propose a dynamic distributed grid scheme which splits a grid cell dynamically based on the density of moving objects. In addition, we propose a k-nearest neighbor processing algorithm for the proposed scheme. Finally, it is shown from the performance analysis that our scheme achieves better retrieval and update performance than the DS-GRID when the moving objects are skewed.

  • The 1st phase framework data implementation of National Geographic Information Systems (NGIS) used 1:5,000 digital map with 5 years updating period which is lacking in the latest information. This is a significant factor which hinders the use of framework data. This study proposed the efficient technical method of a location based object data management and system implementation for updating framework data. First, we did an object-oriented data modeling and database design using a location based features identifier(UFID: Unique Feature IDentifier). The second, we developed the system with various functions such as a location based UFID creation, input and output, a spatial and attribute data editing, an object based data processing using UML(Unified Modeling Language). Finally, we applied the system to the study area and got high quality data of 99% accuracy and 35% benefit effect of personnel expenses compare to the previous method. We expect that this study can contribute to the maintenance of national framework data as well as the revitalization of various GIS markets by providing user the latest framework data and that we can develop the methods of a feature-change modeling and monitoring using an object based data management.

  • Recently, the location-based service for moving customers is becoming one of the most important service in mobile communication area. For moving object applications, there are lots of update operations and such update loads are concentrated on some particular area unevenly. Range queries, whose range can be window or circular, are the most essential query types in LBS. We need to distinguish completely contained cells from partially contained cells in those range queries. Also, it is necessary to consider temporal dimension to filter out qualifying objects correctly. In this paper, we adopt two-level index structures with fixed grid file structures in the second level, which are designed to minimize update operations. We propose a spatial ceil filtering method using VP filtering and a combined spatio-temporal filtering method using time gone concepts. Some experimental results are shown for various window queries and circular queries with different filtering combinations to show the performance tradeoffs of the proposed methods.

  • Transactions of updating spatial dta with mobile clients are log transactions because a user disconnected from a server surveys real features and updates them. In this environment, it is appropriate to exploit the optimistic approach based on the validation test in order to control the concurrency of transactions. On the contrary, the pessimistic concurrency control scheme makes transactions wait for a long time due to the lock. In this paper, we propose the surrogate transaction model and implement its manager for the S-S-M(Server-Surrogate PC-Mobile Client) structure which is appropriate for updating spatial data in mobile environments. In the S-S-M structure, the mobile client communicates with the server by the surrogate PC. We extend the validation condition in consideration of spatial relationships between spatial objects in this model. We also present the commit protocol where the user of a surrogate PC adjusts objects of the conflicted surrogate transaction to minimize costs for the abortion of the transaction.

  • Since large portal service providers started web services for 3D city models around the world using spatial imagery, the competition has been getting intense to provide the models with the higher quality and accuracy. The building models are the most in number among the 3D city model objects, and it takes much time and money to create realistic model due to various shapes and visual appearances of building object. The aforementioned problem is the most significant limitation for the service and the update of the 3D city model of the large area. This study proposed a method of generating realistic 3D building models with quick and economical texture mapping using multiple spatial imagery such as aerial photos or satellite images after reconstructed geometric models of buildings from building layers in digital maps. Based on the experimental results, the suggested method has effectiveness for the generation of the 3D building models using various air-borne imagery and satellite imagery quickly and economically.

  • Location privacy has been a serious concern for mobile users who use location-based services to acquire geographical location continuously. Spatial cloaking technique is a well-known privacy preserving method, which blurs an exact user location into a cloaked area to meet privacy requirements. However, cloaking for continuous moving object suffers from cloaked area size problem as it is unlikely for all objects travel in the same direction. In this paper, we propose a grid-based privacy preservation method with an improved Earth Mover's Distance(EMD) metric weight update scheme for semantic cloaking. We also define a representative cloaking area which protects continuous location privacy for moving users. Experimental implementation and evaluation exhibit that our proposed method renders good efficiency and scalability in cloaking processing time and area size control. We also show that our proposed method outperforms the existing method by successfully protects location privacy of continuous moving objects against various adversaries.

  • Moving objects are spatiotemporal data that location and shape of spatial objects are changed continuously over time. If spatiotemporal moving objects are managed by conventional database system, moving objects management systems have two problems as follows. First, update for location information changed over time is occurred frequently. Second, past and future information of moving objects are not provided by system because only current state of objects is stored in the system. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal moving objects management system which is able to not only manage historical information of moving objects without frequent update, but also provide all location information about past, current, and near future. In the proposed system, information of moving objects are divided into location information for representing location and motion information for representing moving habits. Especially, we propose the method which can search location information all objects by use of changing process algorithms with minimum history information. Finally, we applied the proposed method to battlefield analysis system, as the result of experiment, we knew that past, current, and near future location information for moving objects are managed by relational database and GIS system.

  • Recently, with the rapid development of mobile computing, wireless positioning technologies, and the generalization of wireless internet, LBS (Location Based Service) which utilizes location information of moving objects is serving in many fields. In order to serve LBS efficiently, the location data server that periodically stores location data of moving objects is required. Formerly, GIS servers have been used to store location data of moving objects. However, GIS servers are not suitable to store location data of moving objects because it was designed to store static data. Therefore, in this paper, we designed and implemented an extended SLDS(Short-term Location Data Subsystem) for real-time Location Based Services. The extended SLDS is extended from the SLDS which is a subsystem of the GALIS(Gracefully Aging Location Information System) architecture that was proposed as a cluster-based distributed computing system architecture for managing location data of moving objects. The extended SLDS guarantees real-time service capabilities using the TMO(Time-triggered Message-triggered Object) programming scheme and efficiently manages large volume of location data through distributing moving object data over multiple nodes. The extended SLDS also has a little search and update overhead because of managing location data in main memory. In addition, we proved that the extended SLDS stores location data and performs load distribution more efficiently than the original SLDS through the performance evaluation.

  • This paper addresses the problem of efficient processing of region monitoring queries. The centralized methods used for existing region monitoring query processing assumes that the mobile object periodically sends location-updates to the server and the server continues to update the query results. However, a large amount of location updates seriously degrade the system performance. Recently, some distributed methods have been proposed for region monitoring query processing. In the distributed methods, the server allocates to all objects i) a resident domain that is a subspace of the workspace, and ii) a number of nearby query regions. All moving objects send location updates to the server only when they leave the resident domain or cross the boundary of the query region. In order to allocate the resident domain to the moving object along with the nearby query region, we use a query index structure that is constructed by splitting the workspace recursively into equal halves. However, However, the above index structure causes unnecessary division, resulting in deterioration of system performance. In this paper, we propose an adaptive split method to reduce unnecessary splitting. The workspace splitting is dynamically allocated i) considering the spatial relationship between the query region and the resultant subspace, and ii) the distribution of the query region. We proposed an enhanced QR-tree with a new splitting method. Through a set of simulations, we verify the efficiency of the proposed split methods.
