Recently, the rapid economic growth has caused urban problems due to the increase of urban population and the rapid expansion as a result of exodus phenomenon in rural territories. In order to solve the problems, we need to perform rational and effective plans for national land development. Generally, we need speedy and accurate topographical information of the object area to go ahead with balanced national land development. Acquisition method for topographical data include utilization of existing geographic information such as national base maps and related thematic maps and grasping of accurate present condition of object area using aerial photographies or satellite images. When the object area is small, existing methods for acquiring topographical information reveals imitations in accuracy, speed and economic aspect. Therefore, development of a new method is in order. As a result of this study, we recogized that Photo Balloon System to be manufactured and digital ortho-map to be generated could be used to obtain a topographical information for small areas.

NGIS and other related public projects have contributed to the generalized use of the digital maps. The accuracy and cost-effectiveness of such digital maps can be enhanced from the integrated use with airphotos and satellite imagery. This study mainly focuses on the investigation of a efficient way of integrating the digital map and image data along with searching for a proper standard format for the easier distribution of image data. This includes a thorough investigation of the available oversea image data-DoQ, DEM, DRG-and exisiting data transfer format such as widely used Geo TIFF and BIIF, supported by ISO. Also, major advantages and problems from integrating both data have been discussed to seek alternatives. The major conclusion from the study includes the need for more supports to activate the use of image data by policy-makers and the establishment of standards towards BIIF considering the accuracy, exchangeability, and trends.

The purpose of this paper is to assess conservation value of forests and cultivated areas from the landscape ecological point of view. The main focus of landscape ecology estimates the reciprocal relationships between spatial patterns and ecological processes. This paper sets the criteria for conservation value and classify the conservation value based on the criteria. Forests and cultivated areas in Seo-Gu, Incheon Metropolitan City was selected as the case study area. In this research, factors such as patch size and connectivity have been selected in order to consider the landscape ecological aspect, gradient for the environmental physics aspect and to consider the environment-ecological aspect, grade of environmental-oriented land suitability analysis Map developed by the ROK Ministry of Environment has been utilized. GIS methodologies have been adopted to calculate the relationships among the above variables. Through literature review, the following evaluation criteria have been adopted: (1) based on island biogeography and metapopulation dynamics theory, patch size criteria are set 2ha and 10ha; (2) connectivity was set the degree of connection with surrounding grids; and (3) gradient of 20 degrees. Conclusively, this paper suggests that local conditions, landscape ecology and physical environment aspects should be considered to develop an estimation framework of the conservation value.
In the Seoul metropolitan bus network, it may be necessary for a bus passenger to pick up a parcel, which has been purchased through e-commerce, at his or her convenient bus stop on the way to home or office. The flow-capturing location-allocation model can be applied to select pickup points for such bus stops so that they maximize the captured passenger flows, where each passenger flow represents an origin-destination (O-D) pair of a passenger trip. In this paper, we propose a fast heuristic algorithm to select pickup points using a large O-D matrix, which has been extracted from five million transportation card transactions. The experimental results demonstrate the bus stops chosen as pickup points in terms of passenger flow and capture ratio, and illustrate the spatial distribution of the top 20 pickup points on a map.

Agriculture and forest are basis for livelihood in Nepal while both sectors constitute around 40 percent of the national product and over two-thirds of the economically active population is dependent on agriculture. However, radical changes in land use, depletion in crops production and food availability are major threats due to loss of soil fertilityand severe environmental degradation. In this study, we used time series data from 1986/87 to 2005/06 about food crop production and population published by Government of Nepal, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Central Bureau of Statistics. Descriptive statistics and ArcGIS were used to assess and map the food security status of Nepalese Terai based on the local food demand and supply system. Food supply to demand ratio(FSDR) was the main idea of assessment. Our results showed that out of 20 districts, only 8 districts were categorised under secured food districts whereas 5 districts were still under food unsecured situation. The analysis further revealed that 7 districts had faced food deficit more than 8-16 times during the last 20 year periods. Data further showed that there was surplus food supply relative to the requirements dictated by FSDR. However, the average FSDR was less than 1.2(less than 20% surplus) exploring fact that most of the districts were not producing sufficient food to cope up the food shock and after 1995 it was relatively stagnant. Our prediction reveals that food supply in Terai even in the future would remain at almost the same level as now, and there will not more than 16-17% surplus by 2021 considering medium vibrant population growth. The findings thus, indicate that Terai may not be a food secure region in the future, even though the region is considered as a food storage house of Nepal. In addition, this paper suggests ways to make future comprehensive case studies more widely comparable in Terai, Nepal.

This study aims at predicting and mapping of the landslide susceptibility in the Geumho river watershed using GIS and Remote Sensing techniques. We constructed the spatial database of affecting factors such as slope angle, slope aspect, lithology, landuse, and vegetation index (NDVI) at a $30m{\times}30m$ resolution. The landslide susceptibility of the study area was predicted through overlay analysis and adding up estimation matrix, and the predicted map of landslide susceptibility with six categories (stable, very low, low, moderate, high, very high) was constructed. As the results, it showed that the very high susceptibility zones made up approximately 0.3% of the total study area, and these zones were mainly distributed in the forest area with the high slope angle and low vegetation index.
This study tries to generalize the stream network by constructing rule-based modelling. A study on the map generalization tends to be concentrated on development of algorithms for modification of linear features and evaluations to the limited cartographic elements. Rule-based modelling can help to improve previous algorithms by application of generalization process with the results that analyzing mapping principles and spatial distribution patterns of geographical phenomena. Rule-based modelling can be applied to generalize various cartographic elements, and make an effective on multi-scaling mapping in the digital environments. In this research, nile-based modelling for stream network is composed of generalization rule, algorithm for centerline extraction and linear features. Before generalization, drainage pattern was analyzed by the connectivity with lake to minimize logical errors. As a result, 17 streams with centerline are extracted from 108 double-lined streams. Total length of stream networks is reduced as 17% in 1:25,000 scale, and as 29% in 1:50,000. Simoo algorithm, which is developed to generalize linear features, is compared to Douglas-Peucker(D-P) algorithm. D-P made linear features rough due to the increase of data point distance and widening of external angle. But in Simoo, linear features are smoothed with the decrease of scale.
We present a 1.1mm emission map of the OMC1 region observed with AzTEC, a new large-format array composed of 144 silicon-nitride micromesh bolometers, that was in use at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). These AzTEC observations reveal dozens of cloud cores and a tail of filaments in a manner that is almost identical to the submillimeter continuum emission of the entire OMC1 region at 450 and $850{\mu}m$. We perform Fourier analysis of the image with a modified periodogram and the density power spectrum, which provides the distribution of the length scale of the structures, is determined. The expected value of the periodogram converges to the resulting power spectrum in the mean squared sense. The present analysis reveals that the power spectrum steepens at relatively smaller scales. At larger scales, the spectrum flattens and the power law becomes shallower. The power spectra of the 1.1mm emission show clear deviations from a single power law. We find that at least three components of power law might be fitted to the calculated power spectrum of the 1.1mm emission. The slope of the best fit power law, ${\gamma}{\approx}-2.7$ is similar to those values found in numerical simulations. The effect of beam size and the noise spectrum on the shape and slope of the power spectrum are also included in the present analysis. The slope of the power law changes significantly at higher spatial frequency as the beam size increases.

This paper presents a spatial-level nonparametric multi-focus image fusion technique based on kernel estimates of input image blocks' underlying class-conditional probability density functions. Image fusion is approached as a classification task whose posterior class probabilities, P($wi{\mid}Bikl$), are calculated with likelihood density functions that are estimated from the training patterns. For each of the C input images Ii, the proposed method defines i classes wi and forms the fused image Z(k,l) from a decision map represented by a set of $P{\times}Q$ blocks Bikl whose features maximize the discriminant function based on the Bayesian decision principle. Performance of the proposed technique is evaluated in terms of RMSE and Mutual Information (MI) as the output quality measures. The width of the kernel functions, ${\sigma}$, were made to vary, and different kernels and block sizes were applied in performance evaluation. The proposed scheme is tested with C=2 and C=3 input images and results exhibited good performance.

We report various synchrotron radiation laboratory based techniques used to characterize cement based materials in nanometer scale. High resolution X-ray transmission imaging combined with a rotational axis allows for rendering of samples in three dimensions revealing volumetric details. Scanning transmission X-ray microscope combines high spatial resolution imaging with high spectral resolution of the incident beam to reveal X-ray absorption near edge structure variations in the material nanostructure. Microdiffraction scans the surface of a sample to map its high order reflection or crystallographic variations with a micron-sized incident beam. High pressure X-ray diffraction measures compressibility of pure phase materials. Unique results of studies using the above tools are discussed-a study of pores, connectivity, and morphology of a 2,000 year old concrete using nanotomography; detection of localized and varying silicate chain depolymerization in Al-substituted tobermorite, and quantification of monosulfate distribution in tricalcium aluminate hydration using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy; detection and mapping of hydration products in high volume fly ash paste using microdiffraction; and determination of mechanical properties of various AFm phases using high pressure X-ray diffraction.
