  • Ocean surface waves may be modified by ocean current and their observation may be severely distorted if the observer is on a moving platform with changing speed. Tidal current near a sill varies inversely with the water depth, and results spatially inhomogeneous modulation on the surface waves near the sill. For waves propagating upstream, they will encounter stronger current before reaching the sill, and therefore, they will shorten their wavelength with frequency unchanged, increase its amplitude, and it may break if the wave height is larger than 1/7 of the wavelength. These small scale (${\sim}$ 1 km changes is not suitable for satellite radar observation. Spatial distribution of wave-height spectra S(x, y) can not be acquired from wave gauges that are designed for collecting 2-D wave spectra at fixed locations, nor from satellite radar image which is more suitable for observing long swells. Optical images collected from cameras on-board a ship, over high-ground, or onboard an unmanned auto-piloting vehicle (UAV) may have pixel size that is small enough to resolve decimeter-scale short gravity waves. If diffuse sky light is the only source of lighting and it is uniform in camera-viewing directions, then the image intensity is proportional to the surface reflectance R(x, y) of diffuse light, and R is directly related to the surface slope. The slope spectrum and wave-height spectra S(x, y) may then be derived from R(x, y). The results are compared with the in situ measurement of wave spectra over Keelung Sill from a research vessel. The application of this method is for analysis and interpretation of satellite images on studies of current and wave interaction that often require fine scale information of wave-height spectra S(x, y) that changes dynamically with time and space.

  • A wavefront coding (WFC) technique provides an extension of the depth of field for a microscopy imaging system with slight loss of image spatial resolution. Through the analysis of the relationship between the incidence angle of light at the phase mask and the system pupil function, a mixing symmetrical cubic phase mask (CPM) applied to 5X-40X micro-objectives is optimized simultaneously based on point-spread function (PSF) invariance and nonzero mean values of the modulation transfer function (MTF) near the spatial cut-off frequency. Optimization results of the CPM show that the depth of field of these micro-objectives is extended 3-10 times respectively while keeping their resolution. Further imaging simulations also prove its ability in enhancing the defocus imaging.

  • Imaging through multicore fiber (MCF) is of great significance in the biomedical domain. Although several techniques have been developed to image an object from a signal passing through MCF, these methods are strongly dependent on the surroundings, such as vibration and the temperature fluctuation of the fiber's environment. In this paper, we apply a new, strong technique called deep learning to reconstruct the phase image through a MCF in which each core is multimode. To evaluate the network, we employ the binary cross-entropy as the loss function of a convolutional neural network (CNN) with improved U-net structure. The high-quality reconstruction of input objects upon spatial light modulation (SLM) can be realized from the speckle patterns of intensity that contain the information about the objects. Moreover, we study the effect of MCF length on image recovery. It is shown that the shorter the fiber, the better the imaging quality. Based on our findings, MCF may have applications in fields such as endoscopic imaging and optical communication.

This paper shows study of spherical prism lens design and manufacture of a small size and light weigh EGD with 0.59" OLED panel. Code V is used and it designed an aspherical prism lens about eye relief 25mm and 42 degree of filed of view (FOV). With the application this aspheric prism lens to OLED type's microdisplay, virtual image showed 60 inch at 2m. It had less than 2% of distortion value and modulation transfer function in axial had 30% of resolution with 32 lp/mm spatial frequency. We made an injection molding bases to lens designed.

• Since Leith and Upatnieks demonstrated the first optical hologram in 1964, hologram technology has attracted a great deal of interest in a wide range of optical fields owing to its potential use in future optical applications such as holographic imaging and optical data storage. Although there have been considerable efforts to develop holographic technologies using conventional optics, critical issues still hinder future development. Recently, metasurfaces composed of artificially fabricated subwavelength structures have been considered as novel holographic devices that show an unprecedented ability to control electromagnetic waves. In this review, we outline the recent progress in metasurface holography. A general introduction to several types of metasurface holography categorized based on their physics and application is provided. Then, our personal perspective on the future of this field is discussed.

  • In this paper, a new visual servo method, which uses 5 axis picomotor to compensate the misalignment generated between a SLM and a CCD in a holographic storage device, was proposed and the effectiveness of it was proved by the experiment. In a holographic storage device, the data processing is done by the SLM and the CCD, and the shape of data is 2 dimensional binary patterns. Therefore, the exact image matching between the SLM and the CCD is very important, and the mismatching of it causes the errors in the data reconstruction. First, the brief introduction of a holographic data storage is given, then, BER concept which is errors caused by pixel mismatch between the SLM and the CCD is defined. Second, the geometric relation between 5 axis picomotor and the CCD movement is studied. Finally, the visual servo method using 5 axis picomotor to reduce the BER in a holographic storage device is proposed and experimented. From the experiment, we find that about 3% BER improvement is obtained by the proposed method.
