  • This paper presents an optimal design of a magnetorheological(MR) fan clutch based on finite element analysis and also presents torque control of engine cooling fan using a sliding mode control. The MR fan clutch is constrained in a specific volume and the optimization problem identifies the geometric dimension of the fan clutch that minimizes an objective function. The objective function for the optimization problem is determined based on the solution of the magnetic circuit of the initially designed clutch. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined using finite element analysis. After describing the configuration of the MR fan clutch, the viscous torque and controllable torque are obtained on the basis of the Bingham model of MR fluid. Then, a sliding mode controller is designed to control the torque of the fan clutch according to engine room temperature and control performance is evaluated through computer simulation.

  • This paper presents temperature control of engine cooling system using a controllable magnetorheological (MR) fan clutch. An appropriate size of MR fan clutch is devised and modeled on the basis of Bingham model. Subsequently, an optimization to determine design parameters such as width of housing is undertaken by choosing the reciprocal of the controllable torque as an objective function. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined using finite element analysis. A sliding mode controller is then designed to control the angular velocity of the MR fan clutch using experimentally determined parameters. The designed controller is experimentally implemented and control performances of the MR fan clutch system are evaluated.

  • In this paper, a fully discrete numerical scheme for the viscoelastic Oldroyd flow is considered with an introduced auxiliary variable. Our scheme is based on the finite element approximation for the spatial discretization and the backward Euler scheme for the time discretization. The integral term is discretized by the right trapezoidal rule. Firstly, we present the corresponding equivalent form of the considered model, and show the relationship between the origin problem and its equivalent system in finite element discretization. Secondly, unconditional stability and optimal error estimates of fully discrete numerical solutions in various norms are established. Finally, some numerical results are provided to confirm the established theoretical analysis and show the performances of the considered numerical scheme.

  • Abstract: A technique to analyze the vibrations of internally fluid-filled, semi-infinite cylindrical shell which has strength members embedded in the shell wall under the axial static tension conditon is presented by using the characteristic wave propagation theory based on the transfer matrix calculated from the finite element matrices of a short module section, with spatial Laplace Tranform technique, and is verified by comparison with the measured results of the test performed on a real module model, and the effects of the embedded strength members on the vibrational response is calculated and discussed.

  • The numerical model of the flow analysis by finite element technique is described. The Galerkin method is employed for spatial discretization Two step explicit finite element scheme is used to discretize the time function, which has advantage in problems treating large numbers of elements and unsteady state. Two dimensional hydrodynamic model considering moving boundary condition is developed. Also it applied flow model which develop on flow portion of ideal fluid in the model flume and verified, and the results of this study confirm the efficiency of moving boundary treatment in Jeju harbor. The computed results have shown the good adaptability of moving boundary condition From these studies, it can be concluded that the present method is a useful and effective tool in tidal flow analysis.

  • In th is paper, to predicting the large deformation and cyclic plastic behavior of steel members under loading, 3-Dimensional elastic-plastic FE analysis method is developed by using finite deformation theory and proposed cyclic plasticity model. finite deformation theory, described the large deformation, is formulated by using Updated-lagrangian formulation and Green's strain tensor, Jaumann's derivative of Kirchoff stress. Also, cyclic plasticity model proposed by author is applied to developed analysis method. To verification of developed analysis method, analysis result of steel plate specimen compare to the analysis result using infinitesimal deformation theory and test result. Also, load-displacement and deflection shape, analysis result of pipe-section steel column, compare to test result. The good agreement between analysis result and experiment result shown that developed 3-dimensional finite element analysis can be predict the large deformation and cyclic plastic behavior of steel members.

  • The plane deformation and spatial seepage(PDSS) analysis was developed to consider 3D flow of excess pore water as well as plane deformation of ground. Here is newly developed an equivalent model for PDSS analysis, which was the purpose to reduce number of finite elements and to take the effects of smear and well resistance into consideration. As the result of PDSS analysis with applying the new model, it is showed that the settlement-tin e relationship by PDSS agrees well with those of Plane strain(PS) and axisymmetric analyses, irrespective of existence of untreated layer. And the excess pore pressure distribution by PDSS is relatively agreed with that of axisymmetric analysis, not with that of PS.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model based on the multi-pixel was constructed to accurately predict electric field distributions including an interference phenomenon between adjacent pixels in the liquid crystal of a complicated TFT-LCD panel. Utilizing the elaborate numerical model, the characteristics of spatial electric field distributions depending on various fault-electrode conditions are thoroughly examined on the basis of the field distribution of a normal electrode condition. The validity of the proposed model is proved by comparing the simulation results with those of the existing optical inspection equipments.
