  • Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) is the first ocean color instrument that will be operating in a geostationary orbit from 2010. GOCI will provide the crucial information of ocean environment around the Korean peninsula in high spatial and temporal resolutions at eight visible bands. We report an on-going development of imaging and radiometric performance prediction model for GOCI with realistic data for reflectance, transmittance, absorption, wave-front error and scattering properties for its optical elements. For performance simulation, Monte Carlo based ray tracing technique was used along the optical path starting from the Sun to the final detector plane for a fixed solar zenith angle. This was then followed by simulation of red-tide evolution detection and their radiance estimation, following the in-orbit operational sequence. The simulation results proves the GOCI flight model is capable of detecting both image and radiance originated from the key ocean phenomena including red tide. The model details and computational process are discussed with implications to other earth observation instruments.

  • Based on the general formula for the area error of a polygon and rectangular parcel, the constant term 0.0262 × M (scale denominator) of the area error calculation formula prescribed by the Enforcement Decree was analyzed. As a result, it is found that the formula appropriately reflects the characteristics of the graphical surveying as a typical rectangular parcel model, but quantitatively allows a relatively large area error. In addition, it is found that, even if the area is the same, 50% more area error than a square parcel could be calculated depending on the shape of the parcel, and that the allowable area error should be different when dividing a parcel. Based on the analysis, furthermore, this study shows a solution that can solve the problems at once from the point of cadastral surveying. These are, the problem of reflecting the accuracy of the surveying, the problem of reflecting the size and shape of the parcel, and the problem whether a single area error formula can be used without having to distinguish between graphical and numerical surveyings. The new formula that solves these problems will bring about improvements in many related factors and promote the development of digital cadastral system.

  • Due to their wide range of application, deterministic comprehensive hydrologic models using digital computers have been developed in all countries of the world and researches are being undertaken for their appropriate applications. The aim of this study has been to demonstrate the practical implementation of a physically based distributed hydrologic model, the USDAHL-74 model and to investigate its ability to simulate the long term estimate of water balance quantities in a Korean mountainous watershed. Application of the model to Dochuk watershed indicates the following results. 1.Since the USDAHL-74 model includes all the major components of the hydrologic cycle in agricultural watersheds, thus is comprehnsive, the model seems to have a wide range of application from the fact that simulation results obtained are not only runoff volumes m various time units but their spatial variation as well as even soil moisture within the watershed. 2.An approximate calibration to determine the parameter values in the model using various data obtained from D0chuk shed shows that the simulation error of yearly runoff volume is only 0.6 % and a correlation coefficient between observed daily runoff volume and simulated one is 0.91 in all calibrated period.3.As a verification test of the model, runoff volumes are simulated using 1986 year data without changing the parameter values determined by 1985 year data. The tests show that the USDAHL-74 model is a flexible tool and that realistic production to simulate the long term estimate of runoff in Korean mountainous watershed could be obtained using only a short period of calibration.4. Despite of the encouraging results, there still remain minor problems concerning the practical application of the model to improve the result of simulations. Some of these are the small descrepancies between observed and simulated daily runoff volume appeared in the vicinity of peaks and the recession of1 the daily hydrographs and the model performance for the frozen ground and melting process in the model. 5. Alough the use of parameter with physical significance and the ability to improve calibrations on the basis of physical reasoning represents advantages in the simulation for ungaged watersheds, further researches are needed to use the USDAHL-74 mode to simulate runoff in ungaged watersheds.

  • This study analyzes the effect of floating population, locational characteristics and spatial autocorrelation on foodservice sales using big data provided by the Seoul Institute. Although big data provided by public sector is growing recently, research difficulties are occurred due to the difference of aggregation units of data. In this study, the aggregation unit of a dependent variable, sales of foodservice is SKT unit but those of independent variables are various, which are provided as the aggregation unit of Korea National Statistical Office, administration dong unit and point. To overcome this problem, we convert all data to the SKT aggregation unit. The spatial error model, SEM is used for analysing spatial autocorrelation. Floating population, the number of nearby workers, and the area of aggregation unit effect positively on foodservice sales. In addition, the sales of Jung-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu and Songpa-gu are less than that of Gangnam-gu. This study provides implications for further study by showing the usefulness and limitations of converting aggregation units of heterogeneous spatial data.

  • Despite of large demand for high spatial resolution products of aerosol properties from satellite remote sensing, it has been very difficult due to the weak signal by a single pixel and higher noise from clouds. In this study, aerosol retrieval algorithm with the high spatial resolution ($500m{\times}500m$) was developed using Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data during the Korea-US Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) period in May-June, 2016.Currently, conventional GOCI Yonsei aerosol retrieval(YAER) algorithm provides $6km{\times}6km$ spatial resolution product. The algorithm was tested for its best possible resolution of 500 m product based on GOCI YAER version 2 algorithm. With the new additional cloud masking, aerosol optical depth (AOD) is retrieved using the inversion method, aerosol model, and lookup table as in the GOCI YAER algorithm. In some cases, 500 m AOD shows consistent horizontal distribution and magnitude of AOD compared to the 6 km AOD. However, the 500 m AOD has more retrieved pixels than 6 km AOD because of its higher spatial resolution. As a result, the 500 m AOD exists around small clouds and shows finer features of AOD. To validate the accuracy of 500 m AOD, we used dataset from ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sunphotometer over Korea. Even with the spatial resolution of 500 m, 500 m AOD shows the correlation coefficient of 0.76 against AERONET, and the ratio within Expected Error (EE) of 51.1%, which are comparable to the results of 6 km AOD.

  • The GloSea5 (Global Seasonal forecasting system version 5) is provided and operated by the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). GloSea5 provides Forecast (FCST) and Hindcast (HCST) data and its horizontal resolution is about 60km ($0.83^{\circ}{\times}0.56^{\circ}$) in the mid-latitudes. In order to use this data in watershed-scale water management, GloSea5 needs spatial-temporal downscaling. As such, statistical downscaling was used to correct for systematic biases of variables and to improve data reliability. HCST data is provided in ensemble format, and the highest statistical correlation ($R^2=0.60$, RMSE = 88.92, NSE = 0.57) of ensemble precipitation was reported for the Yongdam Dam watershed on the #6 grid. Additionally, the original GloSea5 (600.1 mm) showed the greatest difference (-26.5%) compared to observations (816.1 mm) during the summer flood season. However, downscaled GloSea5 was shown to have only a -3.1% error rate. Most of the underestimated results corresponded to precipitation levels during the flood season and the downscaled GloSea5 showed important results of restoration in precipitation levels. Per the analysis results of spatial autocorrelation using seasonal Moran's I, the spatial distribution was shown to be statistically significant. These results can improve the uncertainty of original GloSea5 and substantiate its spatial-temporal accuracy and validity. The spatial-temporal reproducibility assessment will play a very important role as basic data for watershed-scale water management.

  • Recently studies on application development and utilization using sensors and devices embedded in smartphones have flourished at home and abroad. This study aimed to analyze the accuracy of the images of smartphone to determine three-dimension position of close objects prior to the development of photogrammetric system applying smartphone and evaluate the feasibility to use. First of all, camera calibration was conducted on autofocus and infinite focus. Regarding camera calibration distortion model with balance system and unbalance system was used for the decision of lens distortion coefficient, the results of calibration on 16 types of projects showed that all cases were in RMS error by less than 1 mm from bundle adjustment. Also in terms of autofocus and infinite focus on S and S2 model, the pattern of distorted curve was almost the same, so it could be judged that change in distortion pattern according to focus mode is very little. The result comparison according to autofocus and infinite focus and the result comparison according to a software used for multi-image processing showed that all cases were in standard deviation less than ${\pm}3$ mm. It is judged that there is little result difference between focus mode and determination of three-dimension position by distortion model. Lastly the checkpoint performance by total station was fixed as most probable value and the checkpoint performance determined by each project was fixed as observed value to calculate statistics on residual of individual methods. The result showed that all projects had relatively large errors in the direction of Y, the direction of object distance compared to the direction of X and Z. Like above, in terms of accuracy for determination of three-dimension position for a close object, the feasibility to use smartphone camera would be enough.

  • When objects are scanned spatially by a laser-beam and mechanical mirror scanners, spatial information can be obtained, and then it is improtant to accurately obtain the parameters relating the light source and camera positions, etc.. In this paper, a calibration technique is presented for correction of measuremtn errors in a three-dimensional laser scanner system with two galvanometers. First, a model of the systematic errors is developed based on the geometry of the scanning system. Calibration parameter values are then iteratively adjusted with coarse-fine search in order to minimize errors (evaluation function) between measured and computed distances. It is shown that this correction method results in measurement precision suitable for practical use.

  • Watershed boundary and stream network can be extracted from DEM(Digital Elevation Model) using GIS software such as ARC/INFO or ArcView Spatial Analyst. However, there exist many errors in the generated watershed boundary and stream network just by operating sink removal function of the present software. This paper present the error reducing method to delineate watershed boundary and generate stream network especially in plane areas by using stream burning techniques known as Fillburn and Agree bum. These preprocessing techniques of DEM dramatically decreased the errors comparing with the results by no-bum DEM.
