  • The aim of this study is to clarify whether frequency and/or severity of extreme climate events have changed significantly in Korea during recent years. Using the best available daily data, spatial and temporal aspects of ten climate change indicators are investigated on an annual and seasonal basis for the periods of 1954-1999. A systematic increase in the $90^{th}$ percentile of daily minimum temperatures at most of the analyzed areas has been observed. This increase is accompanied by a similar reduction in the number of frost days and a significant lengthening of the thermal growing season. Although the intra-annual extreme temperature range is based on only two observations, it provides a very robust and significant measure of declining extreme temperature variability. The five precipitation-related indicators show no distinct changing patterns for spatial and temporal distribution except for the regional series of maximum consecutive dry days. Interestingly, the regional series of consecutive dry days have increased significantly while the daily rainfall intensity index and the fraction of annual total precipitation due to events exceeding the $95^{th}$ percentile for 1901-1990 normals have insignificantly increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to capture how marriage migrant women, who are burdened with the luggage of the social, cultural, and historical 'past,' reconstruct their own 'experiences in reality' as subjective agents after their immigration into a new space. By applying a phenomenological method, this study analyzes the world of life in which marriage migrant women come to have experiences in the dimensions of bodilihood, spatiality, temporality, and relatedness. As a result of the analysis, marriage migrant women never think of their bodiliness as the subject of discrimination though they have some differences in skin colors and cultural aspects, and make efforts to overcome prejudices in reality withtheir pride of body. As for the spatiality, marriage migrant women attempts at a spatial turn in which they reconstruct a novel sociocultural space. With respect to the temporality, marriage migrant women recognize themselves not as passive subjects who only resent reality but as being prepared for future actively. As for the relatedness, marriage migrant women show life in which they pioneer their own areas on the basis of extended personal relations.

  • Dutch artist, Theo van Doesburg had shown short but strong experimental aesthetics in his works through De Stijl movement. He played a leading role for editing De Stijl magazine and performed various formative works such as painting, sculpture, and architecture. In 1923 he opened the first De Stijl exhibition cooperated with Cornelis van Eesteren. In this architecture exhibition he showed rich formal spirits of counter-construction in his major design works, that is Maison Particuliere and Maison D'artiste among three houses projects. Formal characteristics of counter-construction can be summed up under two categories, time and space. Analytical results are as follows; First, the characteristics of counter-construction related to time category include two types of two mode. One is linear aspect of time based on the viewer's movement. The other aspect is simultaneity caused by synoptical effect. These could be proved by the analysis of arrangement of color planes. Secondly, the spatial aspects of counter-construction are produced through two different ways of formal strategies. Van Doesburg arranged cubes in very irregular pattern. This treatment induces ambiguous void and creates feeling of subject's space. And, through deleting, shifting, and extending he could make dynamic spatial effect by interpenetration between in and out. This fluid space thus introduces movements of one's gaze and circulation. He denied traditional classical values which had ruled the western aesthetical discipline for centuries and believed that mankind can reach the realm of universal equilibrium by contrast and tension created by counter-construction. In this vein Theo van Doesburg was an avant-garde artist of Hegelian thoughts who adopted the dialectical method without following the formal characteristics from ancestors.

  • In the modern society, phenomena such as a decrease in population and an increase in urban small houses caused by demographic changes, a decrease in midium-large housing constructions, and the concentration of one to two person families in the capital area cultivated ground for the growth of small house market. In response to these trends, interior coordination becomes a critical factor to be applied to the small houses in order to suit the residents' needs in most convenient, efficient and aesthetic ways. Therefore, an evaluation element is in demand to extract, evaluate and constantly improve the interior coordination elements. This study extracts and analyzes the essential elements required for small houses into spatial structure, system coordination and interior coordination. In domestic cases, most of spatial structure was conventional and linear while in foreign countries, various variations were found to reflect the needs from different consumers. For the system coordination, convenience played the most important role to emphasize on the easy use of digital system and built-in appliance system in domestic cases. However, in foreign countries, safety issue and economic aspects were the most considered when it comes to the interior coordination. In regard to interior coordination, installations of the storages for the limited small spaces that also support as extended spaces were rare to find in both cases for domestic and international settings. It is expected that systematic studies focused on more objective standards for interior coordination shall be implemented to provide indicators to measure the interior coordination cases in the near future.

  • Fractal geometry has become one of prospective research approaches as the complex structure of natural entities is not easily characterized by traditional Euclidean geometry. With the fractal geometry, we can better decipher the complex structure and identify natural and anthropogenic agents of landscape patterns occurring at different spatial scales. The usefulness of fractal, however, has not been fully appreciated among Korean academic societies, especially in ecological and limnological fields. We attempt to address three points in this study. First, we introduce the concept and dimension of fractal and review relevant research approaches, especially with respect to ecological and limnological phenomena. Second, we explore possible applications of fractal to some aspects of geography and land use characteristics in South Korea. For the analyses of fractal dimensions, we used data published in other studies previously and collected for this study. Data were analyzed by a perimeter/area method of fractal dimension for the spatial distribution of global solar radiation and leaf area index, and the movement of wild boars in forested landscapes of mid-eastern Korea. The same approach was also applied to the water channel of a hypothetical river and the shape of reservoirs in Yongin, Kyunggi Province. Finally, we discuss the results and key issues to consider when a fractal approach is employed in ecology and limnology.

  • Hwaseong serial murders are not now having any significant concern either with Hwaseong City or Dongtan New Town, a region in Hwaseong City, both spatial and temporal manners. However, despite that, people have come to see Hwaseong City with negative ideas as the mass media drove the people to do so. In this study, how films and newspaper articles have created those negative images of Hwaseong City was investigated and afterwards, residents and students living in Dongtan New Town had interviews on what they think about the negative regional images. The study, then, worked on a mental map and others based on what it learned from the interviews. Regional identity confusion is now being discovered out of the people's resistance against the negative images of the city and through such research process described before, the study discussed this regional identity confusion caused by living as residents in Hwaseong and living as residents in Dongtan New Town. In addition, the study revealed sense of place of Dongtan New Town and aspects of the regional identity confusion with this Dongtan New Town growing both with symbolic meanings as a place of murders, an awful crime, and spatial meanings as another place of dynamic developments and improvements.

  • Recent climate fluctuation and environmental change at global scale are causing more incidences of disasters and calamities over the world. In a response to this environmental crisis, international collaboration for Earth Observation(EO) is obtaining more significance in order to understand, watch, and forecast changes in the earth system. As such, aerial monitoring based on remotely sensed data, indispensable for EO, is also drawing more attentions. In this context, we discuss diverse aspects of future developments in the Korean domestic system for aerial monitoring. This paper first thoroughly examines current status of national and international collaboration system arid research of aerial monitoring. It then suggests specific development plans for four critical dimensions such as research, organization, institutional systems, and strategies. Our study would facilitate systematically establishing policies for aerial monitoring in Korea and creating a domestic GEOSS(Global Earth Observation System of Systems) in the near future.

  • Using ArcGIS Model Builder, with emphasis on the importance of ecology and user friendliness, a model for site selecting tool is developed. This tool is developed by establishing standardized method for data selection and analysis with evaluation criteria using GIS. For this task, our first action was to objectively define and establish 18 elements to evaluate the potentiality of the site based on extensive literature reviews. These 18 elements reflect environmental, social/cultural and legal aspects that may influence the decision process to select the desired site. Secondly, using ArcGIS Model Builder, 18 analytical elements were made into thematic mapping which represent systematically organized graphic input to the model with automatic double check system and overlay analysis capability. Thirdly, to validate the effectiveness of the developed model, site location analysis was performed using the actual site, Buk-ku, Pohang.
