In order to assure the quality of the bent axis design axial piston pumps driven by tapered pistons, it is necessary to know the characteristics of force applied to tapered pistons and the mechanism for driving the tapered pistons. Since they are able to perform both reciprocating and spinning motions in cylinder block, it is difficult to understand the driving mechanismand-tomeasure the forces applied to tapered pistons experimentally In the present study, the theoretical mechanism for driving the tapered pistons is studied by use of the geometric method. The driving area of the tapered pistons is measured by measuring the strain of a cylinder forced against a tapered piston using an electric strain gauge and a slip ring. The forces applied to tapered pistons is also investigated with the change of discharge pressure and the rotational speed. As a results of this investigation, it is concluded that the cylinder block is driven by one tapered piston in a limited area and the driving area is changed due to space angle of the tapered pistons and the swivel angle of the cylinder block. It is also observed that the force applied to tapered pistons increases as the discharge pressure and the rotational speed increase.

The radiating or receiving characteristics of array elements (i.e., antennas) are changed from those of isolated elements due to mutual coupling effects and the array performance becomes different from those originally designed by assuming isolated elements. The effects of mutual coupling on the performance of a rectangular array with triangular grid geometry of dipoles above a ground plane are discussed with respect to element pattern. The concept of element gain function is used to examine the effects of mutual coupling on the array performance in terms of sidelobe level in the uniformly spaced and space-tapered rectangular arrays with triangular grid geometry of dipoles. It was shown that the sidelobe performance improved in the space-tapered array compared to the uniformly spaced array in the presence of mutual coupling effects. Computer simulation results are presented.
WHEN IT IS REQUIRED TO CONNECT OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINE WITH UNDERGROUND CABLE, PREVALENT METHOD WAS TO USE CABLE HEAD TYPICALLY MADE OF LATTICE STEEL STRUCTURE. BUT IN VIEW OF THE INCREASING DEMAND THAT STEEL STRUCTURE INSTALLED IN URBAN AREA AND/OR RESIDENTIAL AREA NEED TO MATCH WITH ENVIRONMENTAL SURROUNDINGS, THE UNSHAPELY LARGE-SIZED LATTICE STEEL STRUCTURE CAN NOT BE A PROPER ONE BECAUSE THAT IT IS NOT WELCOMED BY THE RESIDENTS AND ACCORDINGLY ITS INSTALLATION TENDS TO CONFRONT WITH CIVIL PETITION. AS AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD TO SETTLE AFOREMENTIONED UNFAVOURABLE SITUATION WE MAY BE UNDER, WE AR INTENDING TO DEVELOP THE CABLE HEAD MADE OF TAPERED TUBULAR STEEL POLE AND TO PUT IT TO PRACTICAL USE. THE ADVANTAGE WE CAN TAKE OF THE TAPERED TUBULAR STEEL POLE IS THAT IT CAN BE INSTALLED IN A VERY LIMITED SPACE MAXIMIZING THE UTILITY VALUE OF THE LAND AND THAT ITS SMART SHAPE WITH COLOUR COATING IN CONSIDERATION OF AESTHETIC AESTHETIC CAN BE IN GOOD HARMONY WITH THE SURROUNDINGS.
An elastic stiffness formula of a leaf type holddown spring(HDS) assembly with a uniformly tapered width from $w_0$ to $w_14$ over the length, has been analytically derived based on Euler beam theory and Castigliano's theorem. Elastic stiffnesses of the tapered-width leaf type HDSs(TW-HDSs) designed in the same dimensional design spaces as the KOFA HDSs have been evaluated from the derived formula, in addition, a parametric study on the elastic stiffness of the TW-HDSs has been carried out. Analysis results show that, as the effects of axial and shear force on the elastic stiffness of He TW-HDSs have been 0.15~0.21% of the elastic stiffness, most of the elastic stiffness is attributed to the bending moment, and that elastic stiffnesses of the TW-HDSs have been about 32~33% higher than those of the KOFA HDSs. It is found that the number of leaves composing a HDS assembly could be lessened by one under the conditions that the TW-HDSs have been adopted in KOFA.
In this paper, we propose a linear tapered slot rectifying antenna for a portable UHF-band RFID system. Since the proposed rectifying antenna does not use a dielectric substrate, the planar antenna is implemented with a thin metal thickness. The rectifier circuit converts input RF power into output DC voltage using a voltage doubler circuit based on two anti-parallel schottky diodes. The rectifying antenna is integrated by the voltage doubler circuit into a linear tapered slot antenna. For conjugate impedance matching of the rectifying circuit and the linear tapered slot antenna, the source-pull method was utilized by adjusting the angle of the tapered slot and the length of the antenna feed line. The proposed antenna prototype has been verified with the electrical and radiation characteristics through RF-DC conversion and far-field radiation test in open space measurement environment. Finally, the proposed antenna is realized to 0.23-wavelength (75 mm) and 0.18-wavelength (60 mm) at 915 MHz center frequency.

The closed forms of consistent mass matrix with rotational inertia matrix are developed for free vibration analysis in space sutructures containing linearly tapered members with cross section of thin-walled I-sections. The exact displacement functions are used for formulating mass matrices. The very small slopes of the tapered member are used in usual practice, such that the series expansion forms of these are also developed to avoid numerical failure in vibration analysis. Significant improvements of accuracy and efficiency of free vibation analysis are achieved by using the mass matrices developed in this study. Frequencies of free vibation of tapered members are compared with solutions based upon stepped representation of beam element in the ANSYS. The mass matrices presented in this study can be used for the free vibration analysis of tapered and prismatic members.
The free electron laser(FEL) with the tapered wiggler in the Compton regime where the space charge effect is negligible was simulated on the basis of one dimensional model. Bunching process and the trajectories of 480 particles, which were loaded randomly in the phase space, were tracked as they traversed the wiggler, and the power and the efficiency of the FEL were estimated.

Thrust vector control(TVC) is the method which generates the side force and moment by controlling the exhausting gas directly from the supersonic nozzle to change the trajectory of a missile quickly. In this paper, performance study on the tapered ramp tabs asymmetrically installed in the supersonic nozzle exhaust for the thurst vector control has been carried out using the supersonic cold flow system. To study the shock wave structure and location of the oblique shock wave produced by the ramp tab, the flow field visualization using the schlieren system is conducted. This paper provides the thrust spoilage, three directional forces and moments and distribution of surface pressure on the region enclosed by the tapered ramp tabs.

The stiffness and mass matrices are developed for free torsional vibration analysis in linearly tapered thin-walled I-beams that takes into account the effect of warping torsion. The approximate shape functions are used for formulating stiffness and mass matrices. Significant improvements of accuracy and efficiency of free vibration analysis are achieved by using the stiffness and mass matrices developed in this study. Frequencies of free vibration of tapered members are compared with solutions based upon stepped representation of beam element and also are verified with model tests. The stiffness and mass matrices presented in this study can be used for the free vibration analysis of tapered and prismatic thin walled I-beams and space structures involving warping torsion.
