Trend of Domestic and International Development of Multi-Purpose Satellites of Geosynchronous Orbit (정지궤도 복합위성 국내외 개발 동향)

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) is developing COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) which is scheduled to take off in June, 2009. COMS is the first geosynchronous satellite developed in Korea which is able to perform three missions 24 hours a day. The oceanic payload was transferred from France to Korea in November, 2008 and made it possible to integrate all three payload together. After the integration COMS is planned to be transferred to Guiana Space Center (on French territory) to be launched. In this paper the trend of domestic and international development of the multi-purpose geosynchronous satellite considering the COMS is the first operational geosynchronous multipurpose satellite in the world.

Characteristic Studies on Loop Heat Pipe with Micro Ceramic Wick (마이크로 세라믹 윅을 사용한 루프 히트파이프의 특성 연구)

  • This paper presents the experimental and simulation study of a loop heat pipe (LHP) that can be applied to present electronics, space missions and thermal control systems. The present experimental study was carried out employing sintered alumina ceramic wick ($d=2.96\;{\mu}m$, ${\phi}=0.61$). High purity R-134a, R-22 and water were also used as alternative working fluids in addition to ammonia. The experimental study showed that the maximum heat transfer performance for the test LHP in the vertical top heating mode was over 100 Watts when ammonia was used as the working fluid. The simulation results have been compared with the experimental results to validate a simulation model based on the thermal resistance network that was developed to evaluate the performance of LHPs, focusing on their prospective applications in electronics. The simulation model is based on the loop overall energy, mass, and momentum balance. The simulation program can predict the effects of various parameters which affect the performance of LHP within 5% compared with the experimental results.

  • Since the 1960s hydrazine is used as a propellant to power rocket, satellites or deep space missions. Due to hydrazine's high toxicity and operating cost, the request for Green Propellant as energetic ionic liquids(HAN, ADN), nitrous oxide blends is growing. Nitrous Oxide Fuel Blend(NOFB) having advantage of a bipropellant performance as well as the advantage of a mono-propellant in respect to the simple propellant tank and feed system. It is worth replacing traditional hydrazine based propellant system if handled and designed properly.

Mission Planning for Underwater Survey with Autonomous Marine Vehicles

  • With the advancement of intelligent vehicles and unmanned systems, there is a growing interest in underwater surveys using autonomous marine vehicles (AMVs). This study presents an automated planning strategy for a long-term survey mission using a fleet of AMVs consisting of autonomous surface vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles. Due to the complex nature of the mission, the actions of the vehicle must be of high-level abstraction, which means that the actions indicate not only motion of the vehicle but also symbols and semantics, such as those corresponding to deploy, charge, and survey. For automated planning, the planning domain definition language (PDDL) was employed to construct a mission planner for realizing a powerful and flexible planning system. Despite being able to handle abstract actions, such high-level planners have difficulty in efficiently optimizing numerical objectives such as obtaining the shortest route given multiple destinations. To alleviate this issue, a widely known technique in operations research was additionally employed, which limited the solution space so that the high-level planner could devise efficient plans. For a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed method, various PDDL-based planners with different parameter settings were implemented, and their performances were compared through simulation. The simulation result shows that the proposed method outperformed the baseline solutions by yielding plans that completed the missions more quickly, thereby demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed methodology.

  • In the modern UAV systems, the role of radar payload has been increasing with its unique performance of day-and-night operation and see-through capability over hidden obstacles. Contrary to the satellite reconnaissance, UAV is expected to provide high resolution target detection and recognition capability while frequent flight missions would deliver enhanced SAR image and local information over the target area. STK(Satellite Tool Kit) is a professional space-analysis software widely used in all phases of a space system's life cycle. The simulation of STK is efficient and accurate relatively. In this paper, the author attempt to model the UAV operation and measure the expected SAR image quality. STK(Satellite Tool Kit) is employed to analyze UAV operation and produce SAR raw data. A SAR simulator is developed to produce high resolution SAR image for various ground targets.

  • In lunar exploration, the necessity of utilizing rover is verified by the examples of the Soviet Union and China and the similar Mars missions of the United States. In order to achieve the successful management of a lunar rover, a high precision navigation technique is required, and accordingly, high precision initial alignment is essential. Even though it is general to perform initial alignment in a steady state, a multiposition alignment technique is applied when high performance is needed. On the lunar surface, however, the performance of initial alignment decreases from that on Earth, and it cannot be improved by applying multiposition alignment method owing to certain constraints of lunar environment. In this paper, a sun sensor aided multiposition alignment technique is proposed. The measurement model for a sun vector is established, and its observability analysis is performed. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified through computer simulations, and the results show the estimation performance is improved dramatically.

  • The role of UCAV is to carry out various missions in hostile situations such as penetration and attack on the enemy territory. To this end, application of RF stealth technology is indispensable so as not to be caught by enemy radar. The X-47B UCAV with blended wing body configuration is a representative aircraft in which modern RCS reduction schemes are heavily applied. In this study, a model UCAV was first designed based on the X-47B platform and then an extensive RCS analysis was conducted to the model UCAV in the high-frequency regime using the Ray Launching Geometrical Optics (RL-GO) method. In particular, the effects of configuration of UCAV considering IR reduction on RCS were investigated. Finally, the effects of RAM optimized for the air intake of the model UCAV were analyzed.

  • The optimized flight path planning which is appropriate for UAV operation with high performance and multiplex sensors is required for efficient ISR missions. Furthermore, a mission visualization tool is necessary for the assessment of MoE(Measures of Effectiveness) prior to mission operation and the urgent tactical decision in peace time and wartime. A mission visualization and analysis tool was developed by combining STK and MATLAB, whose tool was used for UAV ISR mission analyses in this study. In this mission analysis tool, obstacle avoidance and FoM(Figure of Merit) analysis algorithms were applied to enable the optimized mission planning.

  • In this paper, an embedded program of a flight control system for a small high performance UAV is introduced. The program consists of modules for device management and guidance and control. The device management system handles navigation sensors and mission equipments. The program for the guidance and control system is used to accomplish various kinds of missions and realize automation of flight control. Driver programs embedded in the device management system for operation of sensors and external devices are based on Texas Instrument's DSP/BIOS RTOS(realtime operating system). The on-board programs for the guidance and control system is obtained by using the model-based auto code generation technology.

  • A mission scheduling optimization algorithm according to the purpose of satellite operations is developed using genetic algorithm. Satellite mission scheduling is making a timetable of missions which are slated to be performed. It is essential to make an optimized timetable considering related conditions and parameters for effective mission performance. Thus, as important criterions and parameters related to scheduling vary with the purpose of satellite operation, those factors should be fully considered and reflected when the satellite mission scheduling algorithm is developed. The developed algorithm in this study is implemented and verified through a comprehensive simulation study. As a result, it is shown that the algorithm can be applied into various type of the satellite mission operations.
