  • This experiment was conducted to determine tuber yield increase of Konjac by sowing time, seed tuber split method and cultural methods. Tuber yield per unit area was generally increased in early planting than conventional planting time. Tuber yield of polyethylene film mulching culture among storage methods was high, while the emergence rate of konjac for seedling plus PE mulching, and tunnel culture were prompted by 20 days, and especially seedling was to be greatly controlled due to temperature difference of the day and night at emergence. All of the cutting methods(two and four split method) were higher than conventional method because of increasing number of bulblet, accordingly, that method using seed tuber was profitable for mass propagation. Both botanical characteristics and tuber yield tend to be increased at 30 to 50 percent shading than natural condition.

  • Effects of false seedbed procedures in organic corn field were evaluated as affected by preparation date and method. False seedbed was prepared at May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 5 with shallow tillage or flame weeding. Weed suppression rate of each treatment was evaluated 3 weeks after sowing. Optimal false seedbed preparation time was between end of May and early in June. Weed suppression rate of early false seedbed preparation was quiet low. Flaming weed treatment was better than shallow tillage. Weed suppression rate by the second treatment was increased approximately 30-60% compared to $1^{st}$ treatment. Weed suppression rate at 3 weeks after sowing was 70-90% by the second false seedbed preparation. The results showed that the false seedbed technique between end of May and early in June preparation has some potential weed control to reduce weed population during crop growth. Therefore late planting time crop such as corn, sorghum and soybean would be possible to apply false seedbed for organic weed control.

  • Amaranth (Amaranth caudatus) is attracting attention as a preference crop in Gyeongsangbuk-do province. To determine its growth potential and cultivation requirements, we investigated its growth characteristics, dry matter productivity, and grain yield according to the growing period. Growth and dry matter productivity were significantly higher for plants that were sown on May $10^{th}$ when the temperature was the highest, whereas the yield was significantly higher for plants that were sown on April $10^{th}$. Amaranth grain yield ranged from 96 to 243 kg according to the sowing date and cultivation year. The optimum harvest time for plants that were sown on April $10^{th}$, May $10^{th}$, and June $10^{th}$ were 120, 110, and 110 days after seeding, respectively. The mean temperature and growing period had a significant quadratic function with yield. Based on these equations, the optimum growing temperature was estimated as $20.6^{\circ}C$ and the optimum growing period as 104-119 days after seeding.

  • Recently, there has been much research and many attempts to enhance converged information technology services using new technology such as ubiquitous sensor networks (USN) in medical, environmental, industrial, and logistic areas. There has also been much research and various attempts to apply this new technology to agricultural areas. However, applications to the agricultural areas should be considered differently against the same areas such as medical, environmental, industrial, and logistics. Therefore, this paper suggests that an agricultural cultivating management and traceability system. This system is a unified system that supports the processes sowing seeds through selling agricultural products to consumers. Farmers can be provided with an effective calendar for cultivation and weather information in real time as well as the monitoring of the growth of farm products on the farm in real time using this system. Farmers can also control all equipment installed on the farm directly or remotely and the equipment can be controlled automatically when the measured values such as temperature and humidity deviate from the decent criteria which are set by farmers or this system. Additionally, the reliability for and the better quality of the agricultural products can be improved because farmers can use this unified system to cover all processes from sowing seeds to selling to consumers.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of application levels of fertilizer and sowing methods on yields and nutritive values of Italian ryegrass (IRG) in early spring. Five fertilizer levels were used: Treatment 1, 100-80-80 kg/ha; Treatment 2, 120-100-100 kg/ha; Treatment 3, 140-120-120 kg/ha; Treatment 4, 160-140-140 kg/ha; Treatment 5, 140-120-120 kg/ha of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ with silicate fertilizer 200 kg/ha. Dry matter (DM) yield was 8,330 kg/ha in Treatment 5, 7,686 kg/ha in Treatment 4, and 7,347 kg/ha in Treatment 3. There was no significant difference in total digestible nutrients (TDN) content. The content of crude protein was the highest in Treatment 5. Dry matter ratio was the lowest in Treatment 5. In Treatment 3, DM yield was 7,347 kg/ha, when total amounts of fertilizers were applied at one time. However, DM yield was 7,405 kg/ha, when 50% of pre-planting fertilizer and 50% of supplementary fertilizer were applied at different time. There was no significant difference between total application and split application of fertilizers. However, DM yield was 9,469 kg/ha in application treatment with 100 kg/ha of additional urea at three to four leaf stages of IRG. Regarding DM yield by sowing methods of IRG, the following order was found: drill seeding (8,176 kg/ha) > rotary-broadcast seeding-stamping (7,957 kg/ha) > rotary-broadcast seeding (7,810 kg/ha) > broadcast seeding (7,347 kg/ha) > broadcast seeding-rotary (7,034 kg/ha). DM yield (59.57%) was the lowest in broadcast seeding-rotary. Crude protein content was the highest with rotary work but the lowest with broadcast seeding.

  • BACKGROUND: There is lack of comprehensive compositional data of the amino acid profile of spinach with regard to different cultivars. A more detailed knowledge in this aspect will be of benefit in the future selection of spinach genotypes with improved nutritional quality.METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects of cultivar type (Jeoncheonhu, Sagyejul, Namdongcho and Mustang) and harvest time (79th, 116th and 145th days after sowing or DAS) on the concentrations of free amino acids in field-grown spinach (Spinacia oleracea) were examined. About 35 different free amino acids were detected and quantified by the amino acid analyzer. Glutamic acid and proline were identified as the major amino acids, while α -aminoadipic acid and α-aminobutyric acid were present in much lower concentrations. Spinach constituted 1468.4 mg/100 g total free amino acids (TAA), of which essential amino acids, neutral/acidic amino acids and sulphur containing amino acids constituted around 15, 45 and 2% of the TAA, respectively. The most limiting amino acids among the leafy vegetables - cysteine was recorded only in Mustang harvested at 116 DAS. Free amino acid contents did not differ significantly among the spinach cultivars and also at different harvest times.CONCLUSION: The data show that, either of the spinach cultivars, preferably Mustang harvested on or after 116 DAS can serve as a significant source of nutritionally relevant amino acids to meet the demand of the growing populations.

  • In this study, a garlic clove planter which is capable of planting holes in soil and planting a clove at the same time was designed and tested for film mulched beds. Planting characteristics of the planter were measured through field experiment. Some characteristics were analyzed with multibody dynamic simulation software. Simulation was performed on opening time of the planting hopper. Measured characteristics were position, angle, and reposition amount of garlic in sowing hole. Experiment results showed that the planted position of garlic in planting was 23.0 mm from the hole wall. The reposition amount of garlic was varied with its position and angle when the planted garlic was pressed by an angled compaction wheel. In case of type II position, the position movement of garlic was larger than type I. Average position movement of type II was 11.5 mm at $20^{\circ}$ of compaction wheel angle. These data suggest that cutting diameter of film opening must be larger than 33 mm to provide enough space for garlic sprouting. Also, simulation results showed that the maximum opening time of the planting hopper was 0.26 second.
