  • Wet deposition fluxes of ions at a coastal site in southwestern Japan in the period 1996-2003 were investigated to quantify the respective contributions of cyclone-, stationary front- and typhoon-associated rains. On average, the deposition fluxes of terrigenous-origin ions, nss-$SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $NH_4{^+}$ and nss-$Ca^{2+}$ were $37.6{\pm}7.3$, $16.3{\pm}4.2$, $19.0{\pm}3.4$ and $9.6{\pm}4.8meq\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, and those of $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$, the major ions in sea water, were $97.0{\pm}38.2$ and $115.2{\pm}48.2meq\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, respectively. Cyclone-associated rain constituted more than 50% of the fluxes of the terrigenous ions in almost all years. Stationary front-associated rain also contributed significantly, although the contribution was lower than the contribution by Cyclone-associated rain in almost all years. In particular, the wet deposition flux of nitrogen compounds of $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$, which are important nutrients for micro-bioactivities in sea surface water, was dominated by cyclone-associated rain. Due to the extreme abundance of $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ in the rainwater of typhoons, the fluxes of $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ were contributed substantially by typhoons in years with typhoons' passage although cyclones were still the largest contributor to the fluxes. These results indicate the dominance of cyclones in the wet deposition to the East China Sea areas and the necessity to take rain types into account for a more accurate elucidation of the temporal and spatial variation of the wet deposition.

  • Physical and acoustic properties of sediment on the southwestern Taean Penisula, the Yellow Sea, were studied using eight piston cores. The sediments in the study area are largely composed of sand which has been deposited with sea-level change after LGM(Last Glacial Maximum). After the sea-level rise, fine-grained sediments discharged from Keum River and neighboring coast area were deposited as muddy sand or sandy mud. Results of these sedimentary environment in this area, the texture of sediments are different from place to place with variable horizontal and vertical distribution of physical and acoustic properties. Correlations among the physical, geoacoustic properties, and mean grain size show slight deviations from those of the South Sea in spite of similar pattern. This is probably due to the differences in sedimentary environment, mineral composition, and measurement system.

  • To delineate water properties and current patterns in the spawning area of walleye pollock, hydrographic cast and current meter data collected in Strait, Gulf of alaska, were analysed, three water masses are identified in Shelikof Strait. A small amount of cold and dilute water ($<{\;}3^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}<{\;}31.5\textperthousand$) originates from the lower Cook Inlet and flows southwestward close to the Alaska Peninsula coast. One branch of alaska coastal Current which enters the strait from the northeast comprises the main body of the upper and middle layers of the strait, and flows toward the southwest. Estimation of geostrophic baroclinic currents reveals that comparatively fast flow exists in the surface over the deepest portion of the strait, and most water exits through the southwestern entrance between Semidi and chirikof Is. On the other hand, a relatively slow-moving warm and saline ($>{\;}5^{circ}C{\;}and{\;}>{\;}32\textperthousand$) of the southwestern entrance flows northeasterly, and occupies the bottom layer in Shelikof Strait.

  • The effects of water temperature, salinity, water column nutrient contents, and phytoplankton primary productivity on pigment composition and concentration, as well as primary productivity of Pyropia yezoensis Ueda purple lavers were studied at the primary cultivation areas in the Manho (Jindo-Haenam) region on the southwestern coast of Korea in March 2014. The water temperature was $9.1{\sim}9.6^{\circ}C$, salinity was 32.5~33.1, and transparency was 0.7~1.5 m. The shallow euphotic depth resulted from the high turbidity. Water column dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and silicate concentrations were $3.59{\sim}5.73{\mu}M$, $0.16{\sim}0.41{\mu}M$, and $12.41{\sim}13.94{\mu}M$, respectively. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration was $0.51{\sim}1.25{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. Nanoplankton ($0.7{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 58% of the total Chl a concentration. Fucoxanthin was the dominant photosynthetic pigment at all sites. Microplankton ($20{\sim}200{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 64% of the total fucoxanthin concentration. The primary productivity of phytoplankton was $57.72{\pm}4.67(51.05{\sim}66.71)mg\;C\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$. The nanoplankton ($0.7{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 77% of the total phytoplankton primary productivity. The calculated phytoplankton primary productivity was $11,337kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The primary productivity of Pyropia blades was $1,926{\pm}192(1,102{\sim}2,597)mg\;C\:m^{-2}d^{-1}$, i.e., calculated as $39,295kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The total primary productivity of phytoplankton and Pyropia blades was $50,632kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The primary productivity of Pyropia blades was 3.5 times greater than that of phytoplankton in the Manho region on the southwestern coast of Korea.

  • A continuous monitoring of textural characteristics of surface sediments, sedimentation rates and beach profile was carried out to investigate the seasonal variations of sedimentary processes in the Imjado beach, southwestern coast of Korea for two years. The beach profiles consist of steep beach face and relatively flat middle and low tide beaches. The slope of the beach face increases in summer and decreases in winter, in good accordance with the standard beach cycle. Ridge and runnel systems are well developed in the middle and low tide beaches during the summer, but these structures are replaced by mega-ripples during the winter. The sediments are fining southward as well as landward. The mean grain-size tends to be increasingly coarser during seasons of autumn and winter on the north beach and during seasons of winter and spring on the south one. In addition, the sediments are eroded on the north beach and accumulated on the south one as a whole. These are probably due to southward transportation of the sediments as long-shore current (NE-SW) runs around the coastal line of the beach. However, the seasonal variations in accumulation rates are very complex and irregular. It is considered that the Imjado beach represents in non-equilibrium state, as a result of coastal and submarine topographic changes by artificial agents and sea-level uprising associated with global warming.

  • The climatological characteristics of coastal zone over the southwestern coast of Korea peninsula were investigated using the data observed by AWS (automatic weather system) and 4 buoy points. Coastal zone is climatologically defined as the region bounded by the distinct contrast of temperature gradient and wind speed across coastline. In the southwest of peninsula four cross-lines consisted of AWS aligned with each buoy were selected as Geojedo buoy line, Geomundo buoy line, Chilbaldo buoy line and Dukjukdo buoy line. Analysis on the diurnal cycle and intra-month variation, monthly mean and maximum value, the temperature gradient with distance between buoy and each station and the accumulative frequency of wind speed were applied to find out the characteristics and the range of coast zone. The maximum ranges of coastal zone vary from offshore to Sanglim (about 34 km distance from coastline) for Geojedo buoy line, to Sunchun (about 52 km) for Geo-mundo buoy line, to Jaeundo (about 27 km) for chilbaldo buoy line and to Yongin (about 65 km) for Dukjukdo buoy line. The modification of coastal zone according to synoptic flow was investigated for the onshore, off-shore and calm cases. The ranges of coastal zone are significantly changed with the distance between 65∼90 km for the case of onshore. In addition, we tried to find out the variation of the wind and temperature and the wind ratio of wind speed at ocean to land stations along Geojedo buoy line during 12∼13 Sep. 2003 affected by typhoon (MAEMI).

  • In Sagye coast of Andeok-myeon, southwestern Jeju, shore platform of noncohesive Hamori Formation, marine terrace deposit of round gravels, coastal dune composed of shell sand and volcanic sand, and back lake are linked closely with each other. In this paper, the formation process of Sagye coastal geomorphic system analysed by using OSL dating method is as follows: Firstly, Hamori Formation is a horizontal stratum filed up of tuff reworked by submarine volcanic eruption during 3$\sim$7.6 ka BP. Hollow at the boundary between Hamori Formation' flat and Kwangheak Basalt's gentle slope become a back lake when block is appeared over the sea level by uplift. Secondly, while Hamori Formation was laid below sea level, gravels which had been broken and abraded at southwestern rocky coast composed of Kwangheak basalt or been transported through the small stream from adjacent hillslope were deposited in rapid flow environment. Thirdly, deposition of round gravels was ceased by earth uplift, and shore platform was constructed by abrasion process of energy of swash moving forward. As altitude of shore platform is equal to high tidal level of spring tide, compared it with present high tidal level of study area, earth is uplifted about 105m since shore platform was formed. Fourthly, much sandy sediments transported from offshore bottom covered shore platforms and marine terrace deposits. Lighter sediments among sandy sediments was blown to back, formed secondary sand dune since about 500 year.

  • Grain-size distribution and accumulation rate of surface sediments on the tidal flats in Hampyong Bay, southwestern coast of Korea, were investigated in a sequential interval of 2 months for the period of 27 months (1994. 10~1996. 12). Seasonal variation of grain-size distribution is prevalent on the Shimock tidal flat in the southern side of the innerbay, rather than the Anarc tidal flat in the northern side around the baymouth. This variation, in particular, more distinctive in the areas around the both high and low tide water levels. The Shimock tidal flat shows typical seasonal variation of sedimentary processes, expected under monsoonal climate. Deposition of tine-grained sediments in summer dominates over erosion in winter, resulting in an annual accumulation rate of 3.7 mm/yr. In contrast, sedimentary processes on the Anarc tidal flat is abnormal that have experienced slight deposition of fine-grained sediments in the winter and severe erosion in the summer time, showing a negative annual accumulation rate of -49.6 mm/yr. Erosional processes in this area is interpreted due mainly to change of strength and direction of tidal currents, caused by the artificial construction of dyke for reclamation in the mid-tidal flat. As a result, It is immoderate to conclude whether sedimentary processes of Hampyong Bay is erosional or depositional at current situation. Further studies on sedimentary budget at the entrance to the bay are needed.

  • We study on the distribution characteristics of antifouling agents such as Sea-nine 211, Irgarol 1051, Diuron using HS-SPME method in southwestern coast of Korea. Short half-life of Sea-nine 211 was distributed in very low concentrations and/or below detection limits in all of the sampling points, both water and sediments samples. Irgarol 1051 was detected to have the highest concentration respectively $6.98{\mu}g/L$, 28.50 ng/g-dry wt in the seawater and sediments, and regional distribution characteristics did not appeared. Strong bioaccumulation and long half-life of Diuron was distributed higher concentration than in all sampling point and was analyzed to have the highest concentration(3882.22 ng/g-dry wt) Mo7(Mokpo)'s sediment. Irgarol 1051 and Diuron distributed in the shipbuilding industry and ship marina are located just at the point to found in high concentrations. In addition, the distribution of the antifouling agent materials were lower in concentration than in inner bay to outter bay in sediments. Antifouling agent materials from these results were contaminated high potential from port and shipbuilding industry located in inner bay.
