  • In marine salvage, extreme tide heights and tidal currents are necessary to anchor an accidental ship. In order to meet this requirement, a simple scheme was developed which yields the spatial informations on the extreme tide from the distribution of approximate highest astronomical tide heights using a relationship between extreme and highest astronomical tides at the standard port. This method is the inference method based on horizontally homogeneity of tide. This scheme was applied to estimate extreme tide heights and tidal currents in the Namhae (southern sea of Korea). The highest astronomical tide heights are computed by amplitude of four major constituents (M2, S2, K1, O1 tide). The estimated extreme tide heights are ranged from 70 to 260 cm for return period 50 years and from 80 to 270cm for return period 100 years, respectively. For return period 100 years, extreme tidal currents show value of 1.55 times as strong as those of normal state.

  • A marine bacterium having a high oil-degrading activity was isolated form the oil-polluted southern sea of Korea, and was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and was named Pseudomonas aeruginosa BYK-2. The optimal tmeperatur, culture time, pH and NaCl concentration for biosurfactant production and cell growth showed $25^{\circ}C$, 48h, 7.0 and 0%(w/v), respectively. After cultivation at $25^{\circ}C$, 180 rpm in 250 mL erlenmeyer flask for 7days, 1%(w/v) arabian light crude oil and bunker C oil which are considered to be hardly degradable compounds were degraded 92.1%(w/w) and 76%(w/w) respectively. And then, cell adherence was measured on various carbon sources. The cell adherence indicated over 80% on hydrocarbons(arabian light crude oil, kuwait curde oil, bunker C oil, n-paraffine, n-hexadecane, n-tetradecane) as carbon sources. Lecithin among fatty acids(oleic acid, olive oil, lecithin) showed highest cell adherence of 91.5%. The cell adherence of sugars(arabinose, trehalose, dextrose, galactose, lactose, fructose, maltose, sorbitol, sucrose) observed to be less than 70% except for arabinose, galactose, sorbitol and sucrose.

  • Southern sea of Korea was investigated for primary productivity during four scientific cruises of Korea Ocean research and Development Institute. Frontal structure appeared to be an important physical characteristic in enhancing the phytoplankton production in the study area. Relatively high productivity was occurred near the front between Tsushima Warm Current Water and Coastal Waters of China continent in March 1990 and in November 1989, and near the front between Tsushima Warm Current Water and Korean coastal Water in April 1989. In August 1988 high productive zone was limited to the tidal front off the southwestern coast of Korea. Nutrient supply related to the frontal structure might play a dominant role in increasing the primary productivity but mechanisms of nutrient enrichment are not clear. Average column productivity showed its maximum in April 1989 (1727 mgC/m$^2$/day). In the costal Waters of the china Continent incident light may be an important factor in regulating the regulating the phytoplankton production because of low light penetration rate resulting from high turbidity.

  • The Hebrew word for silk, meshi, is mentioned in the Bible only once and there is a possibility that the item to which it referred was made of local wild silk. Although Jewish historical sources from the Roman and Byzantine periods mention silk many times, only a few silk textiles have been discovered at a sited dated to the Byzantine period (4th-7th centuries CE). The word "silk" occurs in the New Testament, although only once. A turning point in the history of the Negev (Southern Israel) occurred around 400 CE when it underwent a period of prosperity related to the advent of Christianity and pilgrimage, which enabled the purchase of imported silk textiles. The Early Islamic period (7-8th centuries CE) yielded four (out of 310) silk textiles from Nahal 'Omer on the Spice Routes joining Petra, in the Edom Mountains of modern Jordan, and the mercantile outlets on the Mediterranean Sea, notably Gaza and El Arish. The most important silk textile assemblage in the Southern Levant was found near Jericho at Qarantal Cave 38 and dates to the medieval period (9th-13th centuries CE). Linen textiles decorated with silk tapestry originating in Egypt date back to the 10-11th centuries CE. Mulham textiles - silk warp with hidden cotton wefts - were discovered in the medieval fortress on Jazirat Fara'un (Coral Island) in the Red Sea, 14 kilometers south of Elat and today located in Egypt. Mulham is mentioned in literary sources of the ninth century in Iraq and Iran, whence it spread through the Islamic world. The article will present aspects of the origin, transmission, and exchange of these textiles.

  • The reproductive characteristics of Pacific anchovy, Engraulis japonicus were investigated using samples randomly collected from the southern waters of Korea between January and December 2021. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity, and fork length (FL) at sexual groups maturity of 50%, 75% and 97.5%, and sex ratio (female:male). GSI value showed two peaks in May and August; however, microscopic analysis of E. japonicus gonad tissue revealed that the spawning period was from March to October. The main spawning seasons for the entire populations were from April to June and August to September. The overall sex ratio was female-biased (1 females, 0.89 male). The fecundity (F) of female anchovies ranged from 429 eggs at an FL of 8.0 cm to 13,824 eggs at an FL of 14.9 cm and the relationship between FL and F was 0.0788FL4.422. The FL at 50% group maturity was 8.26 cm for female anchovies. Based on the results, we suggest that the reproductive cycle in Pacific anchovies may be related to pulses in water temperature and the sexual cycle of the fish.

  • An attempt to derive the surface temperature from the Korea Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT)-3A mid-wave infrared (MWIR) data acquired over the southern California on Nov. 14, 2015 has been made using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) radiative transfer model. Since after the successful launch on March 25, 2015, the KOMPSAT-3A spacecraft and its two payload instruments - the high-resolution multispectral optical sensor and the scanner infrared imaging system (SIIS) - continue to operate properly. SIIS uses the MWIR spectral band of 3.3-5.2 ㎛ for data acquisition. As input data for the realistic simulation of the KOMPSAT-3A SIIS imaging conditions in the MODTRAN model, we used the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) atmospheric profiles, the KOMPSAT-3Asensor response function, the solar and line-of-sight geometry, and the University of Wisconsin emissivity database. The land cover type of the study area includes water, sand, and agricultural (vegetated) land located in the southern California. Results of surface temperature showed the reasonable geographical pattern over water, sand, and agricultural land. It is however worthwhile to note that the surface temperature pattern does not resemble the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance counterpart. This is because MWIR TOA radiances consist of both shortwave (0.2-5 ㎛) and longwave (5-50 ㎛) components and the surface temperature depends solely upon the surface emitted radiance of longwave components. We found in our case that the shortwave surface reflection primarily causes the difference of geographical pattern between surface temperature and TOA radiance. Validation of the surface temperature for this study is practically difficult to perform due to the lack of ground truth data. We therefore made simple comparisons with two datasets over Salton Sea: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) field data and Salton Sea data. The current estimate differs with these datasets by 2.2 K and 1.4 K, respectively, though it seems not possible to quantify factors causing such differences.

  • This study presents an analysis of bycatch data concerning Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) along the Korean coast from 2016 to 2021. A total of 503 bycatches were examined, encompassing data on year, month, body length, sex, latitude (N), longitude (E), and fishing gear. Bycatch was the most frequent in waters with a longitude of less than 130°E, particularly in the southern coastal region at a latitude of 35.5°N, with a higher likelihood of bycatch in lower latitudes. Since 2017, a decreasing trend in bycatches has been observed. The sex distribution of bycaught dolphins showed a predominance of males (40%), followed by females (31%), with an unclassified category at 29%, though no statistically significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Seasonal analysis indicated that bycatch predominantly occurred during the winter months, with significant monthly variations (p < 0.01). Pacific white-sided dolphins were primarily ensnared in gill nets and, to a lesser extent, in stationary nets. Statistical analysis by gear type revealed a significant preference for gill nets (p < 0.001). Considering body length composition in relation to latitude, it is suggested that Pacific white-sided dolphins may utilize the southern waters of the East Sea as a potential nursery ground, though this was not confirmed at a significant level, emphasizing the need for further in-depth monitoring and ecological investigations. Given that there are approximately 27 different types of gill nets associated with the majority of bycatches, more detailed research is warranted to divide these gear types into finer subcategories for estimating bycatch relationships, ultimately leading to the development of effective conservation and management strategies.

  • A three-dimensional numerical model using POM (the Princeton Ocean Model) is established in order to understand the dispersion processes of the Yangtze River water in the Yellow and East China Seas. The circulation experiments for the seas are conducted first, and then on the bases of the results the dispersion experiments for the river water are executed. For the experiments, we focus on the tide effects and wind effects on the processes. Four cases of systematic experiments are conducted. They comprise the followings: a reference case with no tide and no wind, of tide only, of wind only, and of both tide and wind. Throughout this study, monthly mean values are used for the Kuroshio Current input in the southern boundary of the model domain, for the transport through the Korea Strait, for the river discharge, for the sea surface wind, and for the heat exchange rate across the air-sea interface. From the experiments, we obtained the following results. The circulation of the seas in winter is dependent on the very strong monsoon wind as several previous studies reported. The wintertime dispersion of the Yangtze River water follows the circulation pattern flowing southward along the east coast of China due to the strong monsoon wind. Some observed salinity distributions support these calculation results. In summertime, generally, low-salinity water from the river tends to spread southward and eastward as a result of energetic vertical mixing processes due to the strong tidal current, and to spread more eastward due to the southerly wind. The tide effect for the circulation and dispersion of the river water near the river mouth is a dominant factor, but the southerly wind is still also a considerable factor. Due to both effects, two major flow directions appear near the river mouth. One of them is a northern branch flow in the northeast area of the river mouth moving eastward mainly due to the weakened southerly wind. The other is a southern branch flow directed toward the southeastern area off the river mouth mostly caused by tide and wind effects. In this case, however, the tide effect is more dominant than the wind effect. The distribution of the low salinity water follows the circulation pattern fairly well.

  • Disease surveillance was performed to monitor the prevalence of fish pathogens in wild marine fish caught in coastal offshore water in Korea. A total of 333 of fish samples were collected at set net or fish market at landing port in Pohang (East Sea), Taean (Western Sea), Goseong and Tongyeong (Southern Sea) and 21 species of pathogens causing clinical infections to farmed fish were investigated. The detection rates of fish pathogens from Mugili formes, Tetraodontiformes, Pleuroneciformes, Sorpaeniformes, erciformes and Clupeiformes were 90.9, 61.1, 47.6, 43.6, 37.2 and 11.8%, respectively. Comparing with prevalence of diseases seasonally, both the detection rates of bacteria and parasite were higher than those of virus in April but the detection rates of parasites were distinctively higher than those of bacteria in August with high water temperature. Virus were detected in fish samples caught in the Western and Southern Sea in April. The detected parasites were Trichodina, Ichthyophthirius, Dactylogyrus, Microcotyle, Bivagina, Caligus, Alella and Myxobolus. Among the bacterial pathogens, Vibrio, Streptococcus, Photobacterium, Psuedomonas were predominant. Viral nervous necrosis virus (VNNV) and flounder lymphocystis disease virus (FLDV) were detected from the 6 species of fish virus examined in this study.
