  • A survey of CTD casting was taken in April 1991 in the eastern Yellow Sea. The vertical structure of water column consists of the upper mixed warm, the mid cold and the lower warm layers devised clearly by a seasonal thermocline and the temperature inversion. A strongest temperature inversion is found in the southern part of the survey area. Where the low-layer water is $3^{\circ}C$ higher than the mid-layer water. The area of the temperature inversion covers about $100{\;}km{\;}{\times}{\;}100{\;}km$ and it is observed 1.5 month later. The temperature and salinity of the low-layer water shows a core structure in vertical sections and the tongue-like distribution extending from the south to the north, implying that the warm and saline water found in the oceanic front south of the survey area in early spring is advocated to the north over 150 km underneath the Yellow Sea cold water.

  • Fouling by inorganic scales needs to be prevented to effectively operate sea water reverse osmosis(SWRO) membrane systems. The extents of inorganic scaling with different array designs including one-pass, two-pass and several hybrid designs were evaluated using seawater from southern sea near the city of Chang-Won. The used methods for evaluation were Stiff and Davis Index(S&DSI) calculation and several laboratory experiments. The formation potential of inorganic scale fouling was quite great under the examined conditions, which was confirmed by the laboratory experimental results. The inorganic scale was not avoidable fouling if any anti-scaling measures were not applied. The RO showed decreased flux under the scale formation conditions. The increases in S&DSI from 1.43 to 5 made small decreases in flux, which indicated that formation of inorganic scales had more substantial effects on RO flux than amount of inorganic scales.

  • Interannual variation and long-term trends of coastal sea surface temperature (SST) in Korea were investigated by analyzing 27 coastal SST time series from 1969 to 2004. Long-term linear increasing trend was remarkable with the rate over $0.02^{\circ}C/year$ at almost all the stations. The slope of long-term linear trend was larger at the stations along the eastern coast than in the western and southern regions. It was also noticeable that there was a common tendency of interannual variability with the period of 3-5 years at most of the stations. SST was lower in the 1970's and early 1980's while it was higher in the 1990's and early 2000's after the increase in the late 1980's. The pattern of the interannual variability of SST was similar to that of air temperature. Increasing trend of minimum SST in winter was obvious at most stations na it was larger along the eastern coast, while the linear trend of maximum SST in summer was less definite. Therefore, the decreasing tendency of annual amplitude was mainly due to the increasing tendency of SST in winter.

  • In order to investigate the distribution of phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Chuksan Harbor, East Sea, the abundance and biomass of phytoplankton have been evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2000 to October 2002. A total of 363 different phytoplankton species was observed and most of them were composed of diatoms. The mean abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton during the study period ranged from 56 ${\times}$ $10^3$ to 720 ${\times}$ $10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ and from 0.78 to 3.29 μg chl-a $L^{-1}$, respectively. The relative contribution of the size-fractionated phytoplankton to phytoplankton community showed difference according to seasons. The average contribution of nano-phytoplankton(<20 $\mu$m) was over 50% in the total abundance and biomass of the phytoplankton. Our results show that nano-phytoplankton play an important role in the southern coastal waters of the East Sea. And the environmental factors such as suspended substances, phosphates and silicates were positively correlated with the abundances and biomass of phytoplankton.

  • The secular fluctuations of catches and fishing grounds and their relations to the bottom temperature are examined by using data of catches of the Yellow Croaker and the Kang-dal-li by stow net in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea during recent ten years, 1970-1979. The phase of the secular fluctuations of the catches was delayed about two years to that of during 1974-1975, and thereafter were balanced up to the end of 1976. However, after 1976, such tendency was not distinct because of an increase in fishing efforts. The fishing ground in 1977, in which temperatures were lower than other years, was found in the southern part of the fishing grounds of warmer years, for example, 1972.

  • Feeding habits of dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus, were analyzed. Fish samples were collected by using a purse seine, fishing and set net in the southern sea of Korea from January to December 2015. The size of C. hippurus ranged from 23.8 to 127.4 cm in fork length. The species with the highest percent index of relative importance (%IRI; the most important prey taxa) in the diets of C. hippurus were teleosts and cephalopod, including Engraulis japonicus, Thamnaconus modestus and Trachurus japonicus, Loligo edulis was the most frequently consumed cephalopods. Coryphaena hippurus also ate small amounts of amphipods and carid shrimp. The dietary compositions of C. hippurus was not significantly different among size classes or seasons (ANOSIM, P>0.05). As body size of C. hippurus increased the mean number of prey per stomach (mN/ST) tended to decrease, but the opposite trend was evident for mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST). The mN/ST and mW/ST also significantly varied with season (one-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • There were 35 typhoons affecting Korean Peninsula from 1999 to 2009(The average annual number of typhoon is 3.18). Among these typhoons, the number of typhoon passing through the Yellow sea, the Southern sea and the East sea were 14, 6 and 15 respectively. Wind speed on the height of 10 m can be finally estimated using the surface roughness after we calculate wind speed on the height of 300 m from the data on the surface of 700 hPa. From the wind speeds on the height of 10 m, we can understand the regional distributions of strong wind speed are very different according to the typhoon tracks. Wind speed range showing the highest frequency is 10~20 m/s(45.69%), below 10 m/s(30.72%) and 20~30 m/s(17.31%) in high order. From the analysis of the wind speed on the hight of 80 m, we can know the number of occurrence of wind speed between 50 and 60 m/s that can affect wind power generation are 104(0.57%) and those of between 60 and 70 m/s that can be considered as extreme wind speed are even 8(0.04%).

  • The main ports of Korean south sea are exposed to intensive danger as 58.1% of total vessel in Korea waters and 62.9% of total dangerous cargo ships. Therefore, it is required to establish fundamental database to solve numerous issues at the main ports cf the south sea as studying amount of the vessel traffic and their flows into the main ports, and evaluating degree of danger by traffics environmental stress model as analyzing relationships among degree of danger, maritime accident, and number of vessel arriving or departing in the main ports.

  • Spatial and temporal variations of sea surface temperature (SST), abundances of copepods, euphausiids, amphipods, and chaetognaths were investigated in the western waters of the Korean Peninsula. Zooplankton and SST were monitored at 63 stations arrayed in six transects ($124^{\circ}00^{\prime}-126^{\circ}30^{\prime}E$, $34^{\circ}00^{\prime}-37^{\circ}00^{\prime}N$) in February, April, June, August, October, and December during 1978-2010. In general, SST increased $0.7-3.8^{\circ}C$ during the last three decades with spatio-temporal variations. SST was lowest in February and highest in August. SST was highest in the northernmost transect and declined gradually along transects to the south. The general pattern of interannual variations of SST was similar to the global pattern, which has been increasing. Trends of abundances of all zooplankton groups slightly increased interannually and peaked seasonally in June and August, except chaetognaths, which fluctuated around the long-term mean value with a seasonal peak in August and October. Abundances of zooplankton groups were highest in the northernmost transect while those of euphausiids were highest in the southern transect. We discuss the distribution patterns of SST and zooplankton groups in relation to oceanographic characteristics in the study area.

  • Cochlodinium polykrikoides has occurs regularly during the summer in the South Sea of Korea. To investigate photosynthetic pigments concerned with phytoplankton community structure as bloom of Cochlodinium polykrikoides, the experiment was sampled at 20 stations three times between July and September 2002 in the Southern Sea of Korea. The distribution of peridinin, the biomarker of dinoflagellate, was higher at the blooming time than it was before and it disappeared after bloom. The correlative coefficients between Chl. a and peridinin at the blooming time and out of bloom were 0.9253 and 0.1613, respectively. This result indicated that the bloom was caused by dinoflagellate. The correlative coefficients between Chl. a and fucoxanthin were 0.3282 and 0.9759, respectively, and the correlative coefficients showed the succession from dinoflagellate to diatom. This result means that the bloom of Cochlodinium polykrikoides can be detected by Chl. a information from satellite remote sensing. Therefore, if the algorithm to detect peridinin in addition to Chl. a were to be developed, dinoflagellate red tide could be monitored more effectively.
