  • Five-port reflectometer which consists of a ring with 5 arms (two inputs, three outputs) and three RF power detectors has been used as a vector network analyser, a demodulator in the homodyne receiver as well as in Phase Looked Loop (PLL) and so on. Calibration of five-port reflectometer is an important task. In this paper, we present a calibration method of five-port for a propagation channel sounder. The method is based on measurement of the phase differences between the three voltages at the five-port's outputs in order to determine the ratio of two input incident waves. The frequency channel sounder based on five-port is calibrated for each frequency from 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz with 1 MHz step. This method can also determine the absolute delays of each propagation path in the propagation channel. The calibration method is validated using measurement data.

  • The accurate calibration of broadband echo sounders is essential for providing high quality acoustic information for fisheries applications. The increased range resolution of broadband echo sounder systems improves the detection and characterization of targets near boundaries, such as fish near the seabed. Most echo sounder systems are calibrated using tungsten-carbide (WC) spheres. For accurate calibration, it is necessary to select WC spheres of optimized diameters used frequently to calibrate echo sounder systems. For these purposes, the measured and simulated target strength (TS) data for seven WC spheres of different sizes were compared across a bandwidth of 100-200 kHz. The frequency-dependent TS pattern for the specular wave measured from two WC spheres using the fractional Fourier transform was also estimated and analyzed. Comparative results are presented for all the spheres and the best average precision of 0.15 dB was obtained for the 22 mm WC sphere.

  • Detection ranges of acoustic instruments mainly used for fisheries and their research are derived as the range bordered by a certain signal-to-noise ration (SNR) thershold. The SNR is depicted by several factors on transmitting and receiving, sound propagation, scattering by objects, and mainly self-ship noise. The detection ranges are shown for several fisheries instrument, such as echo sounder, quantiative echo sounder, and bio-telemetry system. The results can be used for designing the instruments, examining the capability of user's own instruments, and interpreting obtained data or echograms. Increasing transmitting power is not as effective for high frequencies as for low frequencies to increase the detection range. Comparison of volume backscattering strengths obtained by the quantitative echo sounder at several frequencies should be done within the same detection range. By applying the concept of the detection range for the bio-telemetry receiver beams, the number of the beams and the beamwidths can be determined.

  • This study incorporate hydroacoustic sampling for bathymetry and sediment survey in Won Cheon reservoir, Suwon city, Korea. Bathymetric and sedimentation surveys were conducted using a echo sounder system and subbottom profiler in the reservoirs. Data were collected using echo sounder systems and subbottom profiler linked to a GPS, to maximize data accuracy and vessel use, and geo-referenced using a DGPS enabling the acoustic data to be used in a GIS. Echo sounder and subbottom survey data were merged within geographic information system(GIS) software to provide detailed visualization and analyses of current depths, pre-impoundment topography, distribution, thickness, and volume estimates of lacustrine sediment, and water storage capacity. These data and analyses are, necessary for development of long term management plans for these reservoirs and their watersheds.

  • In this study, the physical properties of the piezoelectric sounder with metal-piezoelectric ceramics were analyzed. The dielectric and piezoeletric properties of 0.5wt% MnO$_2$ and NiO doped 0.1Pb(Mg$\_$1/3/Nb$\_$2/3/)O$_3$-0.45PbTiO$_3$-0.45PbZrO$_3$ ceramics were investigated aiming at acoustic transducer applications. The acoustic characteristics of a thin circular disc-type with metal-piezoceramics have been investigated. Also, the acoustic characteristics for the geometrical form of case were investigated. The piezoelectric sounder with 200kHz resonant frequency and 20kHz bandwidth was designed by considering the sharp directivity and the sound pressure.

  • A Multibeam Echo Sounder (MBES) is commonly used for rapid seafloor mapping. We herein present a time-domain integrated system simulation technique for MBES development. The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) modules consist of four parts: sensor array signal transmission, propagation and backscattering modeling in the ocean environment, beamforming of the received signals, and image processing. Also, the simulation employs a ray-theory-based algorithm to correct the reconstructed bathymetry, which has errors due to the refraction caused by the vertical sound velocity profile. The developed M&S technique enables design parameter verification and system parameter optimization for MBES. The framework of this technique can also be potentially used to characterize the seabed properties. Finally, typical seafloor images are presented and discussed.

  • Multi-beam echo sounder is more precise and efficient than single beam echo sounder relatively because it is able to survey a wide area with 3 times or 4 times swath width as much as the depth of water using multi-beam echo sounder. It is sure to be needed to control supplementary equipment accurately, however, because the principle of creation and measurement of the beam is elaborate and influenced a great deal by vessel's motion. We analyzed using visual and statistical methods in both sections of the depth of water where were the places of the center of the beam and ± 45° angles from the central beam to improve the precise of Multi-beam echo sounder in this study. In result, it was required to control supplementary equipment because of errors from the vibration of an inertia governor and misalignment of extra units. Therefore, we reduced the vibration from the vessel's engine by sticking rubbers to the inertia governor and measured the offset values of extra units accurately, converted them to the values of horizontal position and lined up. In result, the precise in sounding the depth at the place of ± 45° from the center of the beam was improved from the level of the 1st order to the special order in a hydrographic survey of the IHO S44 standards and a phenomenon of ripple patterns in the overlapped area by misalignment was decreased remarkably.

  • In this study, the application of the single beam echosounder and multi beam echosounder was analyzed for the Youngsan river, from the Juksanbo to the Juksan bridge, length of 840m, width 230m and area $0.16km^2$. A single beam echosounder and a multi beam echosounder are mounted on an USV (Unmanned Surface Vessel), and each data is acquired. Then, TIN (Triangular Irregular Network) is created and the grid depth of 10m intervals is extracted. The grid depth of the single beam echo sounder and the grid depth of the multi beam echo sounder were overlapped to compare the two data. As a result of analysis using 5,024 data, the mean depth difference was 0.0319m and the standard deviation was 2.4095m. The river bed shape was similar to each other. If the multi-beam echo sounder is regarded as the standard, the volume difference of the stream is $161,882m^3$. With a multi-beam echo sounder installed, the operating distance increased by approximately 55% to 4595.85m, and the operating time increased by approximately 59% to approximately 47%.
