  • In this study the sound field on the surface of the top edge of noise barriers is actively minimized to enhance the shielding effect without increasing the hight of the barrier. First the results of a numerical study are shown; the sound field reduction in the far field due to a cylindrical active headpiece attached to a semi-infinite screen and the related control parameters are investigated. The results of a model experiment in an anechoic chamber and optimal control parameters for noise control on the railway side are shown and discussed.

  • It is well known that warm eddy is frequently developed through the year in the East Sea. The warm eddy may affect sound propagation due to changes of sound velocity structures in the sea water. To verify the effects of the warm eddy for long-range sound propagation, transmission loss and performance surface, which were used mean direct signal excess range generated by sound propagation modeling using re-analyzed climatology data on March 23th in 2007 were analysed. From these analyses, we found that characteristics of sound propagation in the sea water are changed by the warm eddy, and boundaries of the warm eddy act as a barrier for long-range sound propagation. Furthermore, these disadvantages of the eddy related to sound propagation were increased when the sea bottom depth is shallow.

  • We investigated the influence of rapid thermal annealing on aluminum nitride (AlN) thin film Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) manufactured structures deposited on a 4H-silicon carbide (SiC) wafer using radio frequency sputtering. The Ni/AlN/4H-SiC devices annealed at 400℃ exhibited Schottky barrier diode (SBDs) properties with an on/off current ratio that was approximately 10 times higher than that of the as-deposited device structures and the devices annealed at 600℃ as measured at room temperature. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) measurements revealed that atomic oxygen concentrations in the annealed AlN devices at 400℃, is ascribed to the improvement in on/off ratio and the reduction of on-resistance. Additionally, we investigated the electrical characteristics of the AlN/SiC SBD structures depending on the frequency variation of sound waves.

  • PURPOSES : The noise, which is typically generated by fast moving vehicles, can be intercepted by installing a noise barrier with a soundproof panel. However, reflections from the panels cause secondary noise, and hence lower the effectiveness of the panels. In this study, the reduction of reflection noise by considering the shape, especially zigzag one, of the soundproof panel have been evaluated. METHODS : The simulation model used in this study was Nord2000, which simulates real-road situations effectively. Based on the simulation results, the joining angle of $133^{\circ}$ with the pattern width (a) equal to 2 m and the projection height (b) equal to 0.5 m was adapted in the zigzag shape as the best profit designing factors. RESULTS: The measuring results at middle height, 15 m showed reduction at all points except the point with average -1.6 dB. At a greater height of 30 m, 2 points showed reduction. A real-sized facility was constructed to investigate the reflected sound from a zigzag shaped panel up to the height of 5 m. CONCLUSIONS: The reduction effects were detected in all the receive points in the range of 2-6 m distances and 1-5 m heights comparing the plane panel. Compared to plane panel, the noises are reduced at an average of 2.4 dBA.

  • Sound absorption capability and mechanical properties such as MOE and MOR in bending of miscanthus particle based board were estimated by the two microphone transfer function method and three point bending method, respectively. The results are summarized as follows: The sound absorption coefficients of miscanthus particle based board was higher than those of commercial gypsum board which is well used as sound absorbing barrier. The MOR and MOE of miscanthus particle based board increased with increasing of board density. The sound absorption coefficients of miscanthus particle based board were 50~80% in the frequency range of about 1~2.5 Khz. In entire frequency range, those value increased with target board density decreasing.

  • Traffic noise annoyance in dwelling area like private houses and apartment is becoming very important issue nowadays in South Korea. In this paper frequency analysis of the traffic noise was performed. Based on sound pressure levels analyses and its frequency content specific requirements for component of active noise control systems are formulated. Active compensational loudspeaker, microphone front end and DSP design were analysed, considered and proposed. Components specifications and design solutions are verified using modelling and experimental technique.

  • In order to predict the train noise propagation from a level railroad, this paper presents the model of train noise source and the prediction model based on the results by using the sound intensity method. The prediction model gives the effects of geometric attenuation, ground attenuation, and barrier attenuation of noise. There are several principal assumption in developing model: (a) the train noise is primarily rolling noise; (b) the rail head and wheels are in good condition; (c) the height of source is 10cm above track; (d) the directivity pattern of train noise sources is a dipole source. Calculated results based on this model are compared with available field data and good agreement has been obtained.

  • When visual intrusion is an important factor, it is desirable to find alternative methods of improving the insertion loss of a noise barrier without increasing the height. Therefore, the primary object of the work attenuates the noise due to transport vehicle by small interference device installed at noise barrier edge. In this paper the performance of noise barriers with attached interference device, in terms of shape, absorptive material and split panel, are examined using the boundary element approach. Also, the scale models are moanted in an anechoic chamber and the frequency of the sound sources are appropriately scaled to simulate full scale site conditions. Lastly, experimental measurements of the designs are executed for a range of frequencies and receiver positions, and are compared with the results of numerical modeling.

  • Instead of very expensive sound record and professional measurement microphones the low cost Surface Mounted Device (SMD) microphones are proposed for practical barrier ANC system. FRF of the microphones and theirs sensitivity to the wind interferences are evaluated in semi anechoic chamber. The improvement of feedforward algorithm noise reduction index was evaluated based on measured coherence function between tested SMD and reference microphone. Test was performed at various wind speed from 1 m/s to 5 m/s.
