  • This study analyzes the characteristics of sound-absorbing materials made from forest by-products of the deciduous tree species Zelkova serrata (Z. serrata) by evaluating their sound absorption performance. Accordingly, sound-absorbing materials with varying sample thicknesses, leaf sizes, and drying conditions were fabricated. The sound absorption properties were measured using the impedance tube method via middle-type measurement tube (100 Hz-3,200 Hz). The sound absorption properties were evaluated using the average sound absorption coefficient (ASAC), which was calculated from the measured sound absorption coefficients at 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. The ASAC value significantly improved as the leaf size increased to 0.5×0.5 cm2, 1.0×1.0 cm2, and 2.0×2.0 cm2. The ASAC values under the two drying conditions were similar. There was no significant difference in ASAC according to the leaf size under the air-dried leaf condition, with a thickness of 2.50 cm. The highest ASAC value according to the sound-absorbing material thickness was 0.47 at a thickness of 2.50 cm and leaf size of 2.0×2.0 cm2 under the air-dried leaf condition. In addition, the variation in ASAC was 0.23, indicating that the sound absorption performance according to leaf thickness was more significant than the difference in absorption properties according to leaf size. A sound absorption coefficient (SAC) of 0.4 or higher was observed across the measurable frequency band (100 Hz-3,200 Hz). Furthermore, the SAC values with respect to leaf size and thickness were close to 1 in the high-frequency range above 2,000 Hz. Therefore, it is considered that sound-absorbing materials using Z. serrata leaves are advantageous in the field of absorbing noise in a high-frequency band of 2,000 Hz or more, and it is better to manufacture a thickness of 2.50 and 2.0×2.0 cm2.

  • Sound absorbing materials used for lightweight panels and interior material are mainly made of fibroid material such as glass wool or rock wool. However these fiber type sound absorbing materials have some problems such that sound absorption could be decreased as time goes by because of durability. In addition, dust scattering from fiber type material can cause another problem in health. In this point of view, this study aims to develop environment friendly sound absorbing material using Hwangto(so called loess or yellow soil), a traditional housing material. Hwangto is natural housing material in Korea and generally known for improving indoor air quality. Hwangto panel is made to construct on the floor, wall and ceiling, and expected that there is not enough absorption. Present study tried to develop environment friendly sound absorbing material that has high sound absorption performance with good environment performance in terms of air quality. Pore rate was designed to maximize the absorption in the specific frequency bands, and two kinds of backing space were applied in order to see the effect of backing space. As a result peak frequency that has maximum absorption is going high as the pore rate is increased. The backing space provides more absorption and makes the peak frequency down to low.

  • The sound absorption materials With polyester (PET) were prepared for automobile. They consist of 3 layers with different size of PET fiber (3 and 15 deniers) in order to optimize the characteristic of sound absorption, and with various densities (895~1790 g/$cm^2$) by controlling the weight of PET of each layer. They were also compared with the commercial sound absorption materials made of glass wool. It was shown that the new PET had better absorption capability in both high and low frequency regions than that of the commercial material. It was revealed also that the density and the thickness of PET played an important role to determine the capability of sound absorption. The NRC (noise reduction coefficient) was increased by 22-39% with optimized PET sound absorption material. It should be noted that the PET can substitute the glass wool, a commercial sound absorption material, in view of environment and as well as recycle capability of sound absorption.

  • This study search for absorbing sound and exhaust-gas which aims to manufacture continuous void by using clay and foam, the surface of materials is covered with $TiO_{2}$ powder as heat treatment. According to the results of the experiment, the increase of thickness of manufactured sound absorbing materials caused the increase of absorption rate in the range of low and middle sound and thus it can be an important factor of improving absorption rate. Sound absorbing materials could satisfy 70% of the average of sound absorption ratio in 7cm thickness. Also, the manufactured sound absorbing materials is covered with $TiO_{2}$ showed an excellency in the clarification of exhaust-gas under ultraviolet rays treatment when 70% of removal rate and about 10% of generation rate of $NO_{2}$ is settled by the flow of 2 $\ell$/min NO gas. Especially, manufactured sound absorbing materials could improve compressive strength of continuos porous concrete. in the case of 7% bubble addition, when the substitution rate of coagulator was 30% and 20%, compressive strength was 45kgf/$cm^{2}$ and 65kgf/$cm^{2}$ respectively. As the substitution rate of coagulator reducing, compressive strength increased after preforming burnt clay.

  • Following the 2002 World-Cup held in Korea, studies have been actively conducted on plans to utilize all-weather stadiums of fine figures, where large-scale spaces are available for various utilizations. In Japan, dome-type stadiums have been built and are utilizing across the whole nation not only for sports events but also variety of other large-scale events. PTFE(poly tetra fluoro ethylene) is one of the membrane material mainly used for the outer ceiling surface of membrane structures. However, there has not been enough research on the acoustical properties of PTFE membrane material which has been widely used in the multi-purpose stadiums. In this study, air permeability values and sound absorption coefficient of PTFE membrane materials were measured and evaluated in the gymnasium. From the results of measurements of sound absorption coefficient and air permeability of inner membrane materials, it was found that the sound absorption coefficient was good in the air permeability range of $5{\sim}15\;cc/cm^2/s$. Also the relation ship between air permeability and sound absorption coefficient was very high and the sound absorption coefficient was the highest in the range of $6{\sim}9\;cc/cm^2/s$. Secondly, an analysis on the measurements sound absorption characteristics of inner membrane material reveals that the overall sound absorption coefficient was stabilized(higher than 0.5 throughout the whole frequency bands) when the air space behind the membrane material was deeper than 600 mm. When PTFE sound absorptive membrane material was installed in the ceiling of gymnasium, it was confirmed that sound absorptive membrane material can reduce reverberation and increase speech intelligibility in the gymnasium.

  • Sound absorbing characteristics of poroelastic materials is known to be greatly affected by high intensity acoustic waves. However, this effect has not been considered yet. In this study, the extended semilinear model based on Biot's theory for the porous materials and the characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound absorbing materials were introduced. The expressions for the finite-amplitude acoustic plane waves were presented. By combining each nonlinear wave with appropriate matching conditions, we could investigate the effects of finite-amplitude acoustic waves on absorption characteristics of poroelastic materials. In the most ideal case considered in this paper, the absorption coefficient was found to become larger than that of linear incident waves. It was shown that the absorption coefficient became greater especially as frequency goes higher and as distance from the source goes larger. These phenomena may be inferred to result from 'dissipation effects due to nonlinearity'. This finding may have important implications for high intensity noise control.

  • In this study, single number rating methods of sound absorption coefficients are discussed. After that the sound absorption performance of noise barriers which are classified by Korea Standard are analyzed according to several standards. The existing rating methods such as NRC (noise reduction coefficient), SAA (sound absorption average) or ${\alpha}_w$ (weighted sound absorption coefficient) from ASTM C423, KS F 3505 and ISO 11654 are introduced. The sound absorption performance of noise barrier is evaluated to compare NRC and ${\alpha}_w$ value. When the value is over 0.6 there are large variance between NRC and ${\alpha}_w$ value. As results, it is needed to unify single number rating methods of sound absorption coefficients for Korean standards on sound absorbing materials.
