Effects of Organic Materials and Precipitation on Nitrogen Uptake Efficiency in Sorghum ${\times}$ Sudangrass Hybrid (유기자재와 강수량이 수수${\times}$수단그라스 교잡종의 질소이용효율에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate soil inorganic N concentrations and N uptake efficiency of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) as affected by organic nutrient sources from 2009 to 2011. The treatments included chemical fertilizer, compost, oilcake, alfalfa hay mulch, and control. Nutrient applications were made at rates equivalent to approximately 210 kg of actual N per hectare. The precipitation during the growth period from May to September was higher in 2011, followed by 2009, and 2010. Oilcake had the lowest C:N ratio in the raw materials. Compost treatment slowed N-mineralization rate in soil during the measured years. Soil mineral nutrition and dry matter production were not consistently affected by treatments, but the dry matter production was negatively correlated with the amount of precipitation from May to September for three years. Chemical fertilizer treatment increased N efficiency in plants in the first two years, observing with lower N efficiency in plants treated with compost for 3 years. Increased precipitation from June to August improved N efficiency in sudangrass plants treated with compost but reduced the efficiency with the chemical fertilizer. Total dry matter production and N efficiency in plants were not affected by the C:N ratio of the raw materials rather than weather condition.

  • This experiment was carried out to find the effect of seeding rates and herbicides on the weed control, yield and crude protein of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). The variety used in the present study was Pioneer 988. Two different seeding rates were 25 kg/ha and 50 kg/ha and five weed control treatments were weedy check, hand weeded check, alachlor, alachlor+simazine, and simazine of preemergence application. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Forage yield was not influenced by seeding rates. There was no significant difference between forage yield from 25 kg/ha and from 50 kg/ha of seeding rates. But weedy plots showed higher yield from the high seeding rate. Alachlor+simazine treatment showed the greatest yield among the weed control treatments. But there was no difference among the hand weeded treatment, simazine treatment, and alachlor+simazine treatment. 2. Seeding rates did not affect weed yield, but weedy plots showed the tendancy toward higher weed yield from the low seeding rate. Alachlor+simazing preemergence application showed the most effective weed control. But there was no significant difference in weed yield among the treatments of the hand weeded, alachlor+simazine and simazine. The weed yield in alachlor treatment was significantly higher than other three treatments. 3. The height of plant was shortest on the weedy plots and the longest height was obtained from the alachlor+simazine application. But in the first harvest the height was reduced by herbicides. Seeding rates did not affect the plant height. But the height was slightly taller under the low seeding rate than under the high seeding rate. 4. The percent crude protein of the forage did not affected by two seeding rates. Simazine treatments increased the percent crude protein and total crude protein yield. Simazine and alachlor+simazine application showed the significantly higher percent crude protein than hand weeded and alachlor treatments. Simazine increased the percent crude protein without reduction of forage yield. 5. Whereas the number of original stand was greater in the high seeding rate, the number of tillers per stand was higher in the low seeding rate. Weed reduced the number of stands and tillers. There was no significant indifference among the weed control treatments. It is concluded from above results that when sorghum-sudangrass hybrids are broadcasted for forage, 25 kg/ha rate of seeding is appropriate and alachlor+simazine treatment is most effective on weed control, maximum forage yield, and high percent crude protein.

Cooking Properties and Antioxidant Activity of Cooked Rice According to the Addition of Glutinous and Non-glutinous Sorghum (찰수수 및 메수수 첨가 밥의 취반특성과 항산화활성)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristic of the cooked rice added with glutinous and non-glutinous sorghum. The sorghum cultivars were Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cv. Hwanggeumchal, Nampungchal (glutinous), and Donganme (nonglutinous), and rice cultivar was Ilpum rice. The cooking properties and pasting characteristics of cooking rice adding with sorghum according to varieties and different addition rates evaluated. The cooking properties and pasting characteristics had significant changes with the varieties and different addition rates of sorghum. With increased addition rates of sorghum, the pasting temperature, peak viscosity, trough viscosity, breakdown viscosity, and final viscosity were decreased. With increased addition rates of sorghum, the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents before and after cooked rice were increased. Total polyphenol contents of 30% addition rates before cooking rice with Hwanggeumchal, Nampungchal, and Donganme sorghum were 1,693.30, 1,890.98 and $2,386.11{\mu}g/g$ sample, whereas those after cooking rice with sorghum were 1,189.28, 1,190.42 and $1,397.87{\mu}g/g$ sample, respectively. The high level of DPPH radical scavenging activity before and after cooking rice with sorghum were 126.29 and 70.58 mg TE/100g sample in the Donganme in 30% addition rates. Also, ABTS radical scavenging activity was 135.56 and 83.12 mg TE/100g sample, respectively. The results of this study show that the addition of sorghum can make cooked rice improved antioxidant activity.

Evaluation of Seed Vigor and Morphology by Varietal Difference of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) (수수의 종자형태 및 발아세 평가)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate basic seed characteristics such as morphological characteristics and various seed vigor using 4 sorghum varieties, Nampungchal, Donganme, Hwanggeumchal and Whinchal. No difference was shown in morphological characteristics of the varieties except that the width. Whinchal has bulb-shaped seed, while the other varieties have oval-shaped seeds. The seed coat color of Whinchal is obviously different from those of the other varieties; especially, Nampungchal and Hwanggeumchal are not glossy. Germination rate were Hwanggeumchal > Nampungchal > Donganme > Whinchal in the order of higher rate in standard germination tests and cold germination test. In the ageing test, Donganme showed the lowest 15% decrease in comparison with the standard cultivar. Electric conductivity (EC) has negative correlation with standard germination tests, cold germination test and accelerated ageing test. In the percentage of emergence (PE), Hwanggeumchal was the highest 85.7% which was more than 40% to the lowest Whinchal. Mean emergence time (MET) showed significant difference between the varieties; Whinchal showed the slowest 6.0 days.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Sorghum Tea according to Milling Type and Pan-fried Time (도정도와 볶음시간에 따른 수수차의 이화학적 특성)

  • In this study, sorghum teas were prepared from Sorghum bicolor L. Moench subjected to different types of milling (no milling (0%), minimum milling (5%), and milling (20%)) and pan-firing times (1 to 10 minutes), and its quality characteristics were investigated. With regards to milling type, total polyphenolic, flavonoid, tannin contents, and antioxidant activities of ethanol extracts from both no milling sorghum and its tea were highest, followed by minimum milling and milling in decreasing order. Crude nitrogen content was highest in milling sorghum and its tea regardless of pan-firing time. With regards to pan-firing time, total polyphenolic, flavonoid, tannin contents, and antioxidant activities of sorghum teas increased with increasing pan-firing time regardless of milling type. The highest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were observed at a pan-firing time between 7 to 9 minutes. In contrast to ethanol extracts of pan-fried sorghum tea, antioxidant activities, chromaticity, and turbidity of hot water leaching liqueur of sorghum tea were highest in milling sorghum tea, followed by minimum milling and no milling sorghum tea.

Effect of Cattle Slurry on the Soil Charaters and Production of Forage Crop (액상구비 시용이 사료작물의 생산성과 토양 성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of nitrogen application level of cattle sluny(T1:150, T3:250, T53.50 kglha) and chemical fertilizer(T2:150, T4:250, T6:350 kg/ha) on the growth characteristics, dry matter yield and chemical soil property of Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid [Sorghum bicolor L. Moench]. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Mean stem diameter was significantly increased by increasing nitrogen application level of cattle slurry and chemical fertilizer. Especially, T6 treatment was the highest as 11.1 mm, while T1 treatment w a the lowest as 0.3 mrn. According to the same level of nitrogen application, cattle slurry treaunent(T1, T3 and T5) were showed a lower mean stem hardness than chemical fertilizer treatment(T2, T4 and T6). Physicochemical Characteristics of Sikhye (Korean Traditional Rice Beverage) Using Foxtail Millet, Proso Millet, and Sorghum (조, 기장, 수수를 이용한 식혜의 이화학적 특성)

  • This study was carried out to compare the physicochemical characteristics and sensory qualities of Sikhye (Korean traditional rice beverage) prepared with foxtail millet, proso millet, and sorghum. The cultivated varieties were Setaria italica Beauv. cv. Samdamae (SDM) and Samdachal (SDC), Panicum miliaceum L. cv. Ibaekchal (IBC), Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench cv. Nampungchal (NPC), Donganme (DAM), Oryza sativa cv. Ilpum (IP), and Baegokchal (BOC). The brix degrees of SDM, SDC, IBC, NPC, DAM, IP, and BOC Sikhye were 9.53, 8.63, 5.67, 7.57, 6.27, 12.50, and $12.27^{\circ}Bx$, respectively. There were no significant differences in pH (5.99~6.10) among the groups. The highest turbidity was 1.07 in DAM Sikhye. The L-value, a-value, and b-value were 30.85~41.11, -0.34~2.52, and 2.56~5.67, respectively. Total polyphenol contents of SDM, SDC, IBC, NPC, DAM, IP, and BOC Sikhye were 241.52, 213.69, 202.34, 258.25, 193.24, 160.81, and $170.31{\mu}g\;GAE/mL$, respectively. Total flavonoid contents of Sikhye were $19.21{\sim}54.30{\mu}g\;CE/mL$. The highest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were $16.85{\pm}0.39$ and $64.75{\pm}2.92mg\;TE/100mL$ in DAM Sikhye, respectively. Finally, the sensory evaluation results indicate that there were significant differences in appearance, aroma, and taste between the groups, and SDM Sikhye was similar with IP and BOC.

Effects of Quality Characteristics and Antioxidant Activities of Dry Noodles with Added Sorghum Flour by Characteristics of Endosperm (배유특성이 다른 수수가루 첨가가 건면의 품질특성 및 항산화활성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted in order to investigate the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of dry noodles with addition of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) flour from glutinous and non-glutinous varieties. The sorghum varieties used in this study were glutinous 'Hwaggumchal' and non-glutinous 'Donganme', and the contents added to noodles were 'Hwaggumchal' 5%, 'Hwaggumchal' 10%, 'Donganme' 5%, and 'Donganme' 10%. The turbidity of soup of cooked noodles was increased by addition of sorghum flour. The cooking loss of 'Hwaggumchal' flour added noodles (HFN) was greater than that of 'Donganme' flour added noodles (DFN), reflecting endosperm characteristics. Phenolic compounds such as polyphenol, flavonoid, and tannin contents and antioxidant activity of sorghum flour added noodles were increased in proportion to the amounts of added sorghum flour. In the added varieties, DFN showed greater amounts of phenolic compounds and higher levels of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities than HFN. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of 5~10% DFN were increased by 4.6~6.2 fold and 10.5~13.4 fold, respectively, compared to non-added noodles. Regarding cooking effects, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of sorghum flour added noodles were increased by 10.9~11.2% after cooking. In sensory evaluation, color and appearance value were highest in HFN, and no differences in taste and overall acceptability were observed among treatments.

Effect of Seeding Method and Pre-emergence Herbicides on Plant Growth and the Production of Sorghum × Sudangrass Hybrid (파종 방법과 토양처리용 제초제 처리가 수수 × 수단그라스 교잡종의 생육 및 생산성에 미치는 영향)

  • The following experiments were used to evaluate the effect of seeding method and pre-emergence herbicides on weed control and the production of the $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ [sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] hybrid under field and in vitro conditions. Under the in vitro condition, we evaluated how different kinds of herbicides affect the rate of seed germination and the growth of early seedlings in the $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid treated with herbicides. Simazine, alachlor, and methabenzthiazuron were used, and their concentration levels were 0%, 40%, 70%, and 100%. The germination ratio of the seeds was reduced by the application of simazine, methabenzthiazuron, and alachlor compared with the control (distilled water). The alachlor application severely decreased the sorghum germination ratio. However, seed germination was not greatly influenced by the concentration level of the herbicides. Root and shoot length were increased in the following order: control > simazine > methabenzthiazuron > alachlor. Overall, alachlor significantly reduced root length more than shoot length. The differential tolerance of the $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid to pre-emergence herbicides by seeding method was then tested under the field condition. The plants were severely injured by the alachlor application, leading to a great reduction in the number of stems. However, for the simazine and methabenzthiazuron applications the number of stems lost was slightly lower than it was for the alachlor and simazine + alachlor applications. In the seeding method, drilling was more effective in reducing herbicide injury than broadcasting. All of the herbicides effectively controlled weeds. The simazine and methabenzthiazuron applications showed a significantly higher dry matter (DM) yield. However, the alachlor and simazine + alachlor applications severely reduced the DM yield. This result suggests that the alachlor application has a significant effect on plant production. Similarly, the total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield was greatly reduced by the alachlor and simazine + alachlor applications. From the results presented above, we concluded that the yield of DM was the highest for broadcasting with no herbicide. and drilling was the most-effective way to reduce herbicide injury. The simazine application was the most-effective herbicide, showing the highest forage yield and TDN yield.

Studies on the Nitrate Concentration, Sugar Content and Intake of Four Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrids Grown under Application of Animal Manure (가축분 시용조건에서 4종 수수 X 수단그라 교잡종의 질산태질소 함량과 당도 및 채식률 비교 연구)

  • A field experiment was carried out to compare the nitrate nitrogen concentration, sugar content and animal intake of low $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) grown under application of animal manure in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 40MT in cattle manure, and 30MT/ha in swine and poultry manure. The four NLCF's recommended hybrids used in this study were Pioneer 988, TE-Haygrazer and NC+ 855 (heading type), and Jumbo(headless type). The nitrate nitrogen concentration of forage was 365mg/kg at 50~60cm of plant height, 501mg at 100~120cm, and 502mg at 200~220cm, regardless of animal manure type and cultivar. The nitrate nitrogen concentration of NC+ 855 and P 988 was 519 and 526mg, respectively, and were higher than that(317mg) of Jumbo(P<0.05). The nitrate nioogen concentration of stems was 376mg, and significantly higher than that(135mg) of leaves(P<0.05) regardless of cultivar, and lower parts of stems and leaves were higher than those of upper parts of plants. The sugar contents of four $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids were ranged between 3.1 and $3.7^{\circ}$ in cattle manure, 2.9 and $3.3^{\circ}$ in swine manure, and 2.8 and $4.9^{\circ}$ in poultry manure. The sugar content of NC+ 855 was the highest as $3.9^{\circ}$, p 988 was second as $3.4^{\circ}$, and then TE-Haygrazer and Jumbo were lower as $3.2^{\circ}$ and $2.9^{\circ}$, respectively. Animal intake of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrids P 988 and NC+ 855 were slightly higher than those of Jumbo and TE-Haygrazer grown under application of cattle manure. Also the average intake of P 988 was a little higher than that of Jumbo. However, there were no significant differences of forage intake among few recommended $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids.
