The purpose of study correlation between 3D-surface topography and Cobb angle in scoliotic patients. It would be recognizing possibility of clinical application with 3D-surface topography with scoliosis assessment and correlation analysis of obtained Cobb angle through measured results of surface topography and took X-ray of subjects with scoliosis, which used to 3D-surface topography of laser scan method. A scoliosis subjects 16(males 4, females 12) agreed for study's purport volunteer our study that diagnose the scoliosis through 3D-surface topography and X-ray. The results were as follow: It was shown that the relation of Cobb angle of scoliosis and itemized 3D-surface topography measurement in horizontal view(p<0.01). top difference of cervicothoracic and lumbar in anterior-posterior view(p<0.05), the top difference of thoracic, thoracolumbar(p<0.01). These results suggest that an itemized 3D-surface topography measurement was highly correlated with Cobb angle. It would be a useful diagnosis method and assessment of physical therapy plan.
Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill. (Saururaceae) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of dysuria, leukorrhea, eczema, jaundice and ascites in Korea, China and Japan. Ethanol extract of S. chinensis was successively partitioned as methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and $H_2O$ soluble fractions. Among those fractions the ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed the most potent DPPH radical scavenging and superoxide quenching activities. To verify antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate fraction, we checked the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, and intracellular ROS level and oxidative stress tolerance in Caenorhabditis elegans. Furthermore, to see if increased stress tolerance of worms by treating of ethyl acetate fraction was due to regulation of stress-response gene, we quantified SOD-3 expression using transgenic strain. Consequently, ethyl acetate fraction elevated SOD and catalase activities of C. elegans, and reduced intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, ethyl acetate fraction-treated CF1553 worms exhibited significantly higher SOD-3::GFP intensity.
The utilization of food garbage as composting was investigated by using the batch reactor and by varying the initial temperature of the fermentation reactors. As the straw controlled under 50 to 55% of moisture content and mixed 5% of EM(Effective Micro-organisms) microbial agent. An agitator continuously operated 1 rpm, supplying the amount of air(2l/kg.min). Reactor temperature changed three type of 40$\circ$C, 50$\circ$C, 60$\circ$C. In the case of 50$\circ$C operated 72 hr after organic contents showed lowest 48%, and weight reduction rate of showed 77%. The reaction gas was showed 30 min after 19. 9% of the lowest level at 20.9% concentration of oxygen and CO$_2$ gas was produced 0.9% due to organic disintegration on initial react time. NH$_4$, H$_2$ and CH$_4$ gas concentration showed 589 ppm lhr after, 83 ppm and 0.3%, but 8hr after gas product was complete. As using the straw of bulking agent, the Reduction by disintegration should be more effectively than composting.
Degradation of the starch-polyethylene composite film by an activated sludge treatment and a soil burial test was examined. The treated films had deformed structures which were resulted from the removal of starch during the treatments. The added auto-oxidant caused the degradation of the polyethylene matrices and the crosslinking reactions after the oxidation of polyethylene chains as well. As a result of soil burial test, the degradation reaction of the composite film containing corn oil as an auto-oxidant was, however, prevalent : number- and weight-average molecular weight of polyethylene decreased, while the molecular weight distribution increased.

The electrochemical behaviors of copper-1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol(Cu-PAN) complex in acetonitrile (AN) solution have been investigated by the use of cyclic voltammetry, DC-polarography, controlled potential coulometry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cu-PAN complex in acetonitrile exhibit three reduction waves at -1.27 V, -1.64 V and -2.08 V vs. Ag/AgNO$_3$(AN). The numbers of electron involved in each reduction step was calculated with controlled potential coulometry, and reduction product was identified with UV-Vis spectrum. As the result, we proposed the reduction mechanism of the Cu-PAN complex in acetonitrile.

The complexation of bilirubin with zinc(II) and copper(II) ions was studied spectrophotometrically. In the zinc(II)-bilirubin (Zn-BR) system, complex is formed, but the copper(II) ion oxidizes bilirubin to biliverdin and then to the further oxidation products. The electrochemical reduction behavior of ZN-BR complex has been investigated with DC polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The three polarographic waves were obtained for the reduction of ZN-BR complex in DMF solution. Thde reduction current of the third wave was diffusion current, but that of the first and the second waves contained a little kinetic current.
Allium hookeri (Liliaceae), native to India is widely cultivated in Korea lately as a medicinal plant. This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidant and lifespan extending effects of the root of A. hookeri. Methanol extract from the root of A. hookeri was successively partitioned as methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and H2O soluble fractions. Antioxidant effects of the fractions were measured by measuring the radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and superoxide quenching activities. Lifespan extending effects of the fractions were investigated using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. In addition, stress resistant, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were also studied. Furthermore, we had investigated aging-related factors such as reproduction, food intake, growth and movement of C. elegans to find any sample-induced significant change. Our results revealed that ethyl acetate soluble fraction from the root of A. hookeri showed the most potent antioxidant and lifespan extending effects, and this fraction elevated the most potent SOD and catalase activities of worms, and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation.
Several theories emphasize that aging is closely related to oxidative stress and disease. The formation of excess ROS can lead to DNA damage and the acceleration of aging. Vigna angularis is one of the important medicinal plants in Korea. We isolated vitexin from V. angularis and elucidated the lifespan-extending effect of vitexin using the Caenorhabditis elegans model system. Vitexin showed potent lifespan extensive activity and it elevated the survival rates of nematodes against the stressful environments including heat and oxidative conditions. In addition, our results showed that vitexin was able to elevate antioxidant enzyme activities of worms and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. These studies demonstrated that the increased stress tolerance of vitexin-mediated nematode could be attributed to increased expressions of stress resistance proteins such as superoxide dismutase (SOD-3) and heat shock protein (HSP-16.2). In this work, we also studied whether vitexin-mediated longevity activity was associated with aging-related factors such as progeny, food intake, growth and movement. The data revealed that these factors were not affected by vitexin treatment except movement. Vitexin treatment improved the body movement of aged nematode, suggesting vitexin affects healthspan as well as lifespan of nematode. These results suggest that vitexin might be a probable candidate which could extend the human lifespan.
This study was performed to evaluate the lifespan extending effects of the dried ginger (Zingiber officnale Roscoe, Zingiberaceae). Ethanol extract of the dried ginger was successively partitioned as methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and $H_2O$ soluble fractions, and lifespan-extending effects of the fractions were investigated using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. Ethyl acetate-soluble fraction showed the most potent longevity property. Furthermore, ethyl acetate-soluble fraction elevated thermal stress tolerance, and increased expression of stress resistance protein. Further studies were performed to investigate several aging-related factors such as reproduction, food intake, growth and movement of C. elegans. The results revealed that there were no significant changes in aging-related factors including reproduction, food intake and growth, however, ethyl acetate-soluble fraction treatment led to an up-regulation of locomotory ability of aged worms, suggesting ethyl acetate-soluble fraction affected healthspan as well as lifespan of nematode.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the general characteristics, oral health knowledge and oral health behavior of elderly people and the relationship of their oral health knowledge to practice of the knowledge in an attempt to provide information on the development of the senior oral health care system. Methods : The subjects in this study were 324 elderly people who used five different social welfare centers in the regions of Sooncheon and Yeosoo. Results : 1. The oral health knowledge of the elderly people investigated was at a low level. Among different sorts of oral health knowledge, they had the best knowledge on the cause of dental caries, and they were most ignorant about the right time for regular dental checkup. 2. Regarding connections between general characteristics and oral health knowledge, the elderly people who never went to a dentist had a better knowledge on oral health, and those who cared about oral health had a better knowledge than the others who didn't. 3. As to practice of oral health knowledge, the best oral health behavior they did was to clean the tongue during toothbrushing, and oral health behavior was not to have an unbalanced diet. The second best one was to be well-nourished, and the third best one was to refrain from drinking, smoking and eating sugar-containing food. The fourth best one was to get a regular dental check-up and teeth cleaned. 4. There was a positive correlation between oral health knowledge and oral health behavior. A better oral health knowledge led to a better oral health behavior. Conclusions : The better oral health knowledge of the elderly people was followed by a better oral health behavior, and the development and implementation of customized oral health education programs geared toward the elderly are urgently required. Oral health professionals should direct their energy into providing sustainable and systematic oral health education, and institutional measures should be taken to make it happen.
