The sonar sensors can be divided into a piezo type and an electrostatic type according to a principle of an operating system. The electrostatic type of a sonar sensor is used for map building in this paper. If we know the characteristics of sonar sensor, we can derive the ultrasonic pressure equation from an acoustics theory. We, therefore, developed Ultrasonic Pressure Probabilistic Model (UPPM) to consider the sound pressure in the probability updating process. In this paper, we found that the quality of the resulting probability map is considerably improved, through combining the UPPM with the grid-based mapping algorithm.
A location estimate problem is critical issues for mobile robot. Because it is basic problem in practical use of the mobile robot which do what, or move where, or reach an aim. Already there are many technologies of robot localization (like GPS, vision, sonar sensor, etc) used on development. But the elevation of accurateness was brought the problem that must consider an increase of a hardware cost and addition electric power in each ways. There is the core in question to develop available and accurate sensing algorithm though it is economical. We used a ultrasonic sensor and was going to implement comparatively accurate localization though economical. Using a sensing data, we could make a grid map and estimate a position of a mobile robot. In this paper, to get a satisfactory answer about this problem using a ultrasonic sensor.

This paper proposes a new method of estimating the position and heading angle of a mobile robot moving on a flat surface. The proposed localization method utilizes two passive beacons and a single rotating ultrasonic sensor. The passive beacons consist of two cylinders with different diameters and reflect the ultrasonic pulses coming from the sonar sensor mounted on the mobile robot. The geometric parameter set of beacon is acquired from the sonar scan data obtained at a single mobile robot location using a new data processing algorithm. Form this parameter set, the position and heading angle of the mobile robot is determined directly. The performance and validity of the proposed method are evaluated using two beacons and a single sonar sensor attached at the pan-tilt device mounted on a mobile robot, named LCAR, in our laboratory.

This paper represents the sensor combination technique of mobile robot to reduce the ambiguity and uncertainty of environment that prevents the mobile robot from recognizing the path planning and navigation. The sensors such as optical encoder, ultra sonar sensor, and infra-red sensor gathered the dynamic information of mobile robot that are used to detect the obstacle. Therefore, the mobile robot controller with sensor combination is stably demonstrated by the experimental results.

This paper presents the new obstacle avoidance method that is composed of vision and sonar sensors, also a navigation algorithm is proposed. Sonar sensors provide poor information because the angular resolution of each sonar sensor is not exact. So they are not suitable to detect relative direction of obstacles. In addition, it is not easy to detect the obstacle by vision sensors because of an image disturbance. In This paper, the new obstacle direction measurement method that is composed of sonar sensors for exact distance information and vision sensors for abundance information. The modified splitting/merging algorithm is proposed, and it is robuster for an image disturbance than the edge detecting algorithm, and it is efficient for grouping of the obstacle. In order to verify our proposed algorithm, we compare the proposed algorithm with the edge detecting algorithm via experiments. The direction of obstacle and the relative distance are used for the inputs of the fuzzy controller. We design the angular velocity controllers for obstacle avoidance and for navigation to center in corridor, respectively. In order to verify stability and effectiveness of our proposed method, it is apply to a vision and sonar based mobile robot navigation system.
In this paper, we introduce the methodology that utilizes deep learning-based front-end to enhance underwater feature matching. Both optical camera and sonar are widely applicable sensors in underwater research, however, each sensor has its own weaknesses, such as light condition and turbidity for the optic camera, and noise for sonar. To overcome the problems, we proposed the opti-acoustic transformation method. Since feature detection in sonar image is challenging, we converted the sonar image to an optic style image. Maintaining the main contents in the sonar image, CNN-based style transfer method changed the style of the image that facilitates feature detection. Finally, we verified our result using cosine similarity comparison and feature matching against the original optic image.

It is very important to place receiver in multistatic sonar. Inefficient placement of the receiver reduce detection probability and to increase the probability of detection should be used more receivers. Therefore, detection of targets in searching area, detection performance of limited receiver depends on how to place. Through the optimized receiver placement, detection area between each sonar as much as possible avoid duplication, as optimization, the minimum receiver can be maintained detection performance. In this paper we prove mathematical verification of maximum signal excess value based on sonar placement and we calculate a signal excess value by using computer simulations and suggest optimal sonar placement.

Recently, ship hull-mounted passive sonar system solution is needed in the perspective of improving target detection and elimination of vibration-induced noise. Our research team suggests acousticvibration matching method using front and rear signal of a sensor as the improvement of the problem above. Thus in this paper, theoretical background about matching method and its application on finite element method based multi-physics simulation are described. Furthermore, it is shown that target detection and hull vibration performance are improved by using matching method under the condition of our sensor system. Finally, practicality and future research are discussed.
In sonar sensor design impedance matching design to each sensor affects the whole weighting circuit characteristic very much. But there are many examples that it is made by hands or very simple modeling designs. So these design works make trial and error because it is the limitation of flexible correspondence to the many sensors and follows many errors. This study explains organizations and skills in the sensor modeling package design program with real sonar sensor characteristic measure as the first step in impedance matching design.
