Hot water extracts of Angelica keiskei aerial parts were solvent-fractionated with ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and buffers (5% $NaHCO_3$, pH 8.0; 1.0 N HCl, pH 3.0) to obtain EtOAc-soluble acidic and neutral fractions. EtOAc-soluble neutral fraction was purified by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and reverse phase HPLC. Assay for purification of antioxidative compounds was performed by spraying DPPH solution on thin layer chromatography. Two isolated substances were identified as pseudoisopsoralen and 8-methoxypsoralen(xanthotoxin) by FAB-MS and NMR analyses.
Hot water extracts of Camellia japonica flower buds were found to have the higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity than the other solvent extracts. Five phenolic compounds were isolated and purified from the ethyl acetate soluble-neutral fraction of hot water extracts by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and octadecyl silane-high performance liquid chromatography using the guided assay of DPPH radical scavenging. Based on mass spectrometer and nuclear magnetic resonance, the isolated compounds were identified as p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1), vanillin (2), dehydroxysynapyl alcohol (3), 7S,7'S,8R,8'R-icariol $A_2$ (4), and (-)-epicatechin (5). Four compounds (1-4) except for 5 were newly identified in this plant. Their DPPH radical scavenging activities as 50% scavenging concentration decreased in order to 5 $(20\;{\mu}M)>{\alpha}-tocopherol$$(29\;{\mu}M)>4$$(67\;{\mu}M)>3$$(72\;{\mu}M)>1=2$ ($>250\;{\mu}M$). These results indicate that the antioxidant effect of the hot water extract of C. japonica flower buds may partially due to 5 isolated phenolic compounds.
The quinone reductase (QR) inducing activities of mung bean and soybean solvent extracts were compared using murine hepatoma cells (Hepa 1c1c7). The mung bean extracts (ethylacetate and ethanol) showed higher chemoprevention index values (7.88-8.22) than those of soybean extracts (2.9-5.2) from four different cultivars. The mung bean extracts also had significantly higher inhibitory effects (47-62% at 100 ${\mu}g$/mL) than the soybean extracts (15-42% at 100 ${\mu}g$/mL) against the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 in lipopolysccharide stimulated macrophage RAW264.7 cells without cytotoxicity. Among seven recovered fractions of mung bean ethanol extract obtained by C 18 silica flash column chromatography, the most non-polar fraction exhibited the highest chemoprevention index of 10.4.
Background: Research on hot water extracts of medicinal plants that are easily applicable in the clinical setting is essential. To confirm the anti-inflammatory-related active compounds present in the hot water extract of Eriobotrya japonica leaves, ability to inhibit nitric oxide (NO) production was measured and active compounds isolated from the extract were analyzed. Methods and Results: Sovent fractionation by solvent was performed to identify the active compounds present in the hot water extract, and the ability of the extract and the fractions obtained to inhibit NO production was measured. Subsequently, based on the results of liquid chromatography (LC) profile analysis of the n-butanol fraction that had a relatively high inhibitory ability of NO production, six subfractions were separated around the main peak. Among the separated subfractions spectra from mass spectroscopy (MS) were analyzed and standard comparisons were performed on the compounds of the three main peaks on the chromatogram. NO production inhibitory activity of subfraction 2 identified as neochlorogenic acid was the highest with an IC50 of 18.49 ㎍/㎖ followed by that of subfraction 5 identified as cryptochlorogenic acid with IC50 of 25.82 ㎍/㎖. Conclusions: Our result, it was confirmed that several caffeoylquinic acids, including neochlorogenic acid and cryptochlorogenic acid present in the hot water extract of E. japonica leaves have an important role as compounds exhibiting anti-inflammatory activity.

Previously, we have reported a plant extract isolated from Lysimachia foenum gracum Herba as a new environment friendly biopesticide that has the mycelial growth inhibition effect on Magnaporthe oryzae, the pathogenic fungus of the rice blast disease. For the finding of additional biopesticide candidate, we tested the mycelial growth inhibitory effects about 700 species of plant extracts on PDA media. Among them, the extract of Anemarrhena asphodeloides showed prominent inhibitory effect of which $IC_{50}$ was $139.7{\mu}g/ml$. Mycelial radii of M. oryzae were measured on PDA medium containing the four organic solvent fractions isolated from total extract from A. asphodeloides. Ethyl acetate fraction showed the impressive inhibitory effect of $IC_{50}$, $54.12{\mu}g/ml$. In the subsequent rice field test for the total extract of A. asphodeloides, we obtained encouraging 62.0% control rate of rice blast disease without any phytotoxicity. It is almost equivalent to that of chemical pesticides implying the applicability of the extract as a new biopesticide. In further study, the analysis of active ingredients of the extract would be necessary for the development of a new biopesticide and for the verification of cellular mechanism by which the mycelial growth of M. oryzae inhibited.

The chemical compositions of the root bark of Ulmus species and mucilage were investigated. The methanol extractives were fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate and water and antibacterial activities of each fraction were investigated. Although differences of chemical compositions of the Ulmus species were not noticeable, nitrogen and lignin contents of xylem were higher than those of phloem. However, ash and extractive contents showed adverse results. The mucilage of root bark was slowly gushing out by water and similar to pectin substance with high acidic sugar content. In fractionation experiment, the yield of methanol extraction was about 7% and the portion of water-soluble materials in methanol extractives was 78%. These water- soluble materials had the most high antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium.
We investigated the chemical components of red onion powder dried using the low temperature vacuum method and the inhibitory effects of solvent extracts of the dried red onion powder on the growth of HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma and HT-29 human colon cancer cells and $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress. The moisture content of the dried red onion powder was 17.95%, while the vitamin C content was 96 mg/100 g and the total phenols content was 39.1 mg/mL. The inhibitory effects of acetone with methylene chloride (A+M) and methanol (MeOH) extracts of the red onion powder on the growth of HT-1080 and HT-29 cancer cells increased in a dose dependent manner (p<0.05). The inhibitory effect was greater on the growth of HT-29 cells, while the A+M extracts had a higher inhibitory effect than the MeOH extracts. Treatment with the hexane, 85% aq. methanol, butanol and water fractions of the extract led to significant inhibition of the growth of both cancer cell lines (p<0.05). Among the fractions, the hexane and 85% aq. methanol fractions showed a greater inhibitory effect. To determine the protective effect on $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress, a DCFH-DA (dichlorodihydrofluorescin diacetate) assay was conducted. All fractions, including the crude extracts of dried red onion, appeared to lead to a significant reduction in the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and these reductions occurred in a dose dependent fashion (p<0.05). Among the fractions, the 85% methanol fraction showed the greatest protective effect on the production of lipid peroxides.

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi parasite, is a significant but neglected tropical public health issue in Latin America due to the diversity of its genotypes and pathogenic profiles. This complexity is compounded by the adverse effects of current treatments, underscoring the need for new therapeutic options that employ medicinal plant extracts without negative side effects. Our research aimed to evaluate the trypanocidal activity of Bidens pilosa fractions against epimastigote and trypomastigote stages of T. cruzi, specifically targeting the Brener and Nuevo León strains-the latter isolated from Triatoma gerstaeckeri in General Terán, Nuevo León, México. We processed the plant's aerial parts (stems, leaves, and flowers) to obtain a methanolic extract (Bp-mOH) and fractions with varying solvent polarities. These preparations inhibited more than 90% of growth at concentrations as low as 800 ㎍/ml for both parasite stages. The median lethal concentration (LC50) values for the Bp-mOH extract and its fractions were below 500 ㎍/ml. Tests for cytotoxicity using Artemia salina and Vero cells and hemolytic activity assays for the extract and its fractions yielded negative results. The methanol fraction (BPFC3MOH1) exhibited superior inhibitory activity. Its functional groups, identified as phenols, enols, alkaloids, carbohydrates, and proteins, include compounds such as 2-hydroxy-3-methylbenzaldehyde (50.9%), pentadecyl prop-2-enoate (22.1%), and linalool (15.4%). Eight compounds were identified, with a match confirmed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST-MS) software through mass spectrometry analysis.

Currently, methods for controlling weeds in organically produced crops have not been as effective as conventional methods. This research was carried out to determine the herbicidal effects of leaf, stem, fruit, root extracts of Trichosanthes kirilowii. The extraction methods used were water, boiling water and ethanol. The characteristics of potential herbicidal components among extraction methods were investigated by using the following solvent fractions: hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water. Generally, water extracts provided the best on inhibition of germination rate, plant height, and root length in cucumber and barley. Specifically, extractions made from fruit parts of T. kirilowii provided the greatest inhibition effect on plant growth in cucumber and barely. Inhibition of germination rate, plant height, and root length in cucumber and barley in solvent fractions was the best in water fractions, but there were no significant differences among the other fractions. Digitaria siliaris and Solanum nigrum were controlled 80-100% by 5% extractions of water fraction. However, there were no herbicidal effects from foliar treatment in cucumber, barley, black nightshade, and henry crabgrass by 5% extractions of the water fraction. These results show that extractions of T. kirilowii can be used for controlling some weeds in organically produced crops.
To find out the possible variation in chemical composition among ginseng products, the amount of saponin, extract and other basic components in different age and portion of ginseng roots(Panax ginseng Meyer) were investigated and compared with. (1) Great difference in the amount of ash, crude protein, fiber, fat, total sugar and reducing sugar was observed among different portion of the root comparing with those of different age of the root. That of ash, crude fiber, saponin and extract produced was higher in epidermis, fiber roots and subterranean stems, while that of crude protein, total sugar, panaxadiol/panaxatriol was higher in central portion and branch of the root. (2) The amount of extract produced was affected by the solvent used. Higher amount was obtained when water was employed. It was decreased as the increase of the concentration of alcohol solvent. Futhermore, the composition and physical properties were greatly varied by the concentration of alcohol solvent. (3) The amount of total-N, $P_2O_5,\;K_2O$, and ash was higher in two to three years old roots, while those of crude $SiO_2,\;CaO,$ crude fiber, and total sugar was higher in order roots. No difference was found in amount of MgO, Fe, Zn, and Na among age of the root.
