  • The electrospinnability of pitch was improved by blending in a solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) resulting in the reduction of the average fiber diameter from 2000 to 750 nm. Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) derived by stabilization, carbonization and steam activation at 700, 800, and 900 ${^{\circ}C}$ of the PAN/pitch electrospun fibers for 60 min were investigated as electrodes for supercapacitors. The Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) specific surface area ranged from 732 to 1877 $m^2g^{-1}$ and the specific capacitance from 75.5 to 143.5 $Fg^{-1}$, depending on the activation conditions. Electrodes from the electrospun web activated at 900 ${^{\circ}C}$ exhibited a particularly quick response showing a high frequency of 5.5 Hz at a phase angle of ‒$45^o$ of the impedance spectroscopy.

  • In the present study, the removal of Pb (II) ions on oxidized activated carbons (ACs) was investigated. ACs were derived from activation of indigenous cotton stalks waste with potassium hydroxide (KOH) in two-stage process. The KOH-ACs were subjected to liquid-phase oxidation with hot $HNO_3$ and one untreated sample was included for comparison. The obtained carbons were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), slurry pH and $N_2$-adsorption at 77 K, respectively. Adsorption capacity of Pb (II) ions on the resultant carbons was determined by batch equilibrium experiments. The experimental results indicated that the oxidation with nitric acid was associated with a significant increase in mass of yield as well as a remarkable reduction in internal porosity as compared to the untreated carbon. The AC-800N revealed higher adsorption capacity than that of AC-800, although the former sample exhibited low surface area and micropore volume. It was observed that the adsorption capacity enhancement attributed to pore widening, the generation of oxygen functional groups and potassium containing compounds leading to cation-exchange on the carbon surface. These results show that the oxidized carbons represented prospective adsorbents for enhancing the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

  • Ta-doped thin films were deposited on quartz and indium-tin oxide glass substrates using a co-sputtering method. The Ta-doped films formed a solid solution that induced structural changes from rutile to anatase phase. The anodic photocurrents of the Ta-doped $TiO_2$ electrodes were observed not only in UV but also in the visible light range. The photocurrent response in visible light on Ta-doped $TiO_2$ films are due to bandgap reduction.

  • A compact and broadband $4\times1$ array antenna was developed for 3G smart antenna system testbed. The $4\times1$ uniform linear away antenna was designed to operate at 1.885 to 2.2GHz with a total bandwidth of 315MHz. The array elements were based on the novel broadband L-probe fed inverted hybrid E-H (LIEH) shaped microstrip patch, which offers 22% size reduction to the conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. For steering the antenna beam, a commercial variable attenuator (KAT1D04SA002), a variable phase shifter (KPH350SC00) with four units each, and the corporate 4-ways Wilkinson power divider which was fabricated in-house were integrated to form the beamforming feed network. The developed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 17.32% $(VSWR\leq1.5)$, 21.78% $(VSWR\leq2)$ with respect to center frequency 2.02GHz and with an achievable gain of 11.9dBi. The design antenna offer a broadband, compact and mobile solution for a 3G smart antenna testbed to fully characterized the IMT-2000 radio specifications and system performances.

  • This study aims to apply multistage homotopy perturbation method(MHPM) to space truss composed of discrete members to obtain a semi-analytical solution. For the purpose of this research, a nonlinear governing equation of the structures is formulated in consideration of geometrical nonlinearity, and homotopy equation is derived. The result of carrying out dynamic analysis on a simple model is compared to a numerical method of 4th order Runge-Kutta method(RK4), and the dynamic response by MHPM concurs with the numerical result. Besides, the displacement response and attractor in the phase space is able to delineate dynamic snapping properties under step excitations and the responses of damped system are reflected well the reduction effect of the displacement.

  • An experimental study using the combustor with branch tube was conducted in order to model the industry combustor with FGR (flue gas recirculation) system and to study a thermo-acoustic instability generated by a branch tube. The branch tube is a structure used to modify a system geometry and then to change its pressure field, and the thermo-acoustic instability, usually occurs in a confined geometry, can result in serious problems on industrial combustors. Thus understanding of the instability created by modifying geometry of combustor is necessary to design and operate combustor with FGR system. Pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber was observed according to diameter and length of branch and it was compared with the solution of 1-D wave equation. It was found that branch tube affects the pressure field in the combustion chamber, and the pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber was reduced to almost zero when phase difference between an incipient wave in the combustion chamber and a reflected wave in the branch tube is $\pi$ at the branch point. Also, the reduction of pressure fluctuation is irrespective of the installed height of branch tube if it is below $h^*=0.9$ in the close-open tube and open-open tube.

  • The effects of the mixed two solvents, Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and Dimethylformamide (DMF), and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as additives on performance of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were studied. Initially, PEG200 was used as a primary additive at fixed percentage of 5% wt. PVP was then blended with PEG200 in different concentrations. PVDF and DMAc were used as polymer and solvent in the casting solutions, respectively. To control the diffusion rate of PVP in the presence of PEG200 and PVP blend, mixtures of DMAc and DMF were used as the mixed solvent in the casting solutions. Asymmetric PVDF membranes were prepared via phase inversion process in a water bath and the effects of two additives and two solvents on the membrane morphology, pure water flux (PWF), hydrophilicity and rejection (R) were investigated. Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (ATR-FTIR) analysis was used to show the residual PVP on the surface of the membranes. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was utilized to determine roughness of membrane surface. The use of mixed solvents in the casting solution resulted in reduction of PVP diffusion rate and increment of PEG diffusion rate. Eventually, PWF and R values reduced, while porosity and hydrophilicity increased.

  • The paper describes a theoretical study on the speed of the torsional elastic waves propagating in a circular cylinder whose outer radius varies periodically as a harmonic function of the axial coordinate. The approximate solution for the phase speed has been obtained using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of small amplitude. It is shown that the wave speed in the cylinder with a corrugated outer surface is less than that in a smooth cylinder by the square of the amplitude of the surface perturbation. This theoretical prediction agrees reasonably with an experimental observation reported earlier. It is also shown that the wave speed reduction due to the surface corrugation becomes larger for a thinner cylinder and for a bigger density of corrugation.

  • Ti-3wt.%Nb(${\alpha}$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb(${\alpha}+{\beta}$,type) and Ti-40wt.%Nb(${\beta}$type) alloys were melted by vacuum are remelting. The specimens were homogenized at 1050$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr and were then hot rolled to 50% reduction. Each alloys were solution heat treated at ${\beta}$ zone and ${\alpha}+{\beta}$, zone after homogenization, and then aged. The microstructural and hardness changes in Ti-Nb alloys with Nb contents were investigated by SEM, XRD and hardness tester. The microstructural change from equiaxied to acicular and the increase of ${\beta}$ phase in Ti-Nb alloys were obtained when the Nb content increased. The higher hardness value of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$type alloy was obtained compared to the other alloys.
