The co-firing processes for the supported type planar solid oxide fuel cell were investigated. A flat cell of $7.7${\times}$10.8\textrm{cm}^2$ was fabricated successfully by the co-firing process, in which green films were co-sintered in the forms of two layers of anode/electrolyte or of three layers of anode/electrolyte/cathode with gas distributor. A co-fired cell of two layers yielded a power of 200 ㎽/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 608 ㎷. Its performance loss was mainly due to iR drop in the anodic gas distributor, which was attributed to poor contact between anodic gas distributor and current collector. The performance in the co-fired cell of three layers was much lower than that of two layers, which resulted from the large iR drop and activation overvoltage at the cathodic side. In the co-fired cell of two layers, the impedance analysis indicated that the performance decay during cell operation is due to both anode overvoltage and iR drop at anode side. Also the electrode reaction of the co-fired two layers' cell is considered to be controlled by activation overvoltage within the low current of 50 ㎃.
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising eco-friendly energy conversion system due to their high efficiency, low pollutant emission and fuel flexibility. High operating temperatures, however, leads to the crucial drawbacks such as incompatibility between the components and high thermal stress. Proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) with proton-conducting oxide (PCO) materials are new types of fuel cells that can solve the problems of conventional SOFCs. Many studies have been proceeded to improve the performance of electrolytes and electrodes, and triple conductive oxides (TCOs) have attracted significant attention as high performance PCFC electrodes.
Sustainable shipping depends on eco-friendly energy solutions. This paper reviews methods for predicting marine fuel cell performance, including empirical approaches, physical modeling, data-driven techniques, and hybrid methods. Accurate prediction models tailored to the marine environment's unique conditions are crucial for operational efficiency. By evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each method, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of effective strategies for forecasting polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and solid oxide fuel cell performance in marine applications. These insights contribute to the advancement of eco-friendly shipping technologies and enhance fuel cell performance in challenging marine environments.

Strong restrictions on emissions from marine power plants (particularly $SO_x$, $NO_x$) will probably be adopted in the near future. In this paper, a combined solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and gas turbine fuelled by natural gas is proposed as an attractive option to limit the environmental impact of the marine sector. It includes a study of a heat-recovery system for 18 MW SOFC fuelled by natural gas, to provide the electric power demand onboard commercial vessels. Feasible heat-recovery systems are investigated, taking into account different operating conditions of the combined system. Two types of SOFC are considered, tubular and planar SOFCs, operated with either natural gas or hydrogen fuels. This paper includes a detailed thermodynamic analysis for the combined system. Mass and energy balances are performed, not only for the whole plant but also for each individual component, in order to evaluate the thermal efficiency of the combined cycle. In addition, the effect of using natural gas as a fuel on the fuel cell voltage and performance is investigated. It is found that a high overall efficiency approaching 70% may be achieved with an optimum configuration using SOFC system under pressure. The hybrid system would also reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and improve the total system efficiency.
Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has received significant attention recently because of its potential for the clean and efficient power generation. The current manufacturing processes for the SOFC components are somehow complex and expensive, therefore, new and innovative techniques are necessary to provide a great deal of cell performance and fabricability. Three-dimensional (3D) printing processes have the potential to provide a solution to all these problems. This study reviews the literature for manufacturing the SOFC components using 3D printing processes. The technical aspects for fabrication of SOFC components, 3D printing processes optimization and material characterizations are discussed. Comparison of the SOFC components fabricated by 3D printing to those manufactured by conventional ceramic processes is highlighted. Further advancements in the 3D printing of the SOFC components can be a step closer to the cost reduction and commercialization of this technology.
An experimental study on the catalytic reformer adopted in the auxiliary power unit system of solid oxide fuel cell was conducted. A 3-fluid nozzle, by which liquid fuel such as diesel, water and air are sprayed and uniformed mixed, was designed and used in this study. An electrically heated monolith inserted in the reformer was used for the vaporization of fuel and water in the transient state of reformer. The reformer uses the partial oxidizing reaction at the catalyst and the supply of water prevents the flame combustion in the spraying zone and lessens the deactivation of catalyst. The result showed that the reforming of liquid fuel can be started by the electrically heated monolith and the 3-fluid nozzle can give the uniform mixing of fuel, water and air. It was also found that the reformer fueled by n-hexadecane can make the reformate, at best, containing $H_2$ at 15.5% and CO at 11.5% that are used as fuel in the solid oxide fuel cell.
Newly structured metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell was fabricated and characterized by impedance analysis and galvanodynamic experiment. Using a cermet adhesive, thin ceramic layer composed of anode(Ni/YSZ) and electrolyte(YSZ) was joined with STS430 metal support of which flow channel was fabricated. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_3$ perovskite oxide was used as cathode material. Single cell performance was increased and saturated at operating time to 300hours at 800$^{\circ}C$ because of cathode sintering effect. The sintering effect was reinvestigated by half cell test and exchange current density was measured as 0.005A/$cm^2$. Maximum power density of the cell was 0.09W/$cm^2$ at 800$^{\circ}C$. Numerical analysis was carried out to classify main factors influencing the single cell performances. Compared to experimental IV curve, simulated curve based on experimental parameters such as exchange current density was in good agreement.

Solid oxide fuel cell/gas turbine hybrid systems that use three gas turbines having different power outputs were devised and their performance was compared. The power shares of the gas turbine and fuel cell and the net system efficiency were compared among the three systems, and their variations with the design fuel cell temperature were investigated. The system efficiency was predicted to be insensitive to the fuel cell temperature in the sub-MW system, but it increased with increasing fuel cell temperature in both the multi-MW and hundred-MW systems. The influence of air bypass around the fuel cell on the system performance was also investigated.
Direct Carbon Fuel Cells (DCFCs) generates electricity directly converting the chemical energy in coal. In the present study, effects of anode and current collector materials on the power density of DCFC are investigated experimentally. The adopted DCFC system is combined type of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) with the use of a liquid-molten salt anode and a solid oxide electrolyte, proposed by SRI. Power densities of 25 mm button cells with various combination of anode materials and current collector materials are measured.
